PB hotel design editorial

Carved into a sheer limestone cliff between Positano and Praiano, where the rock face drops almost vertically into water of extraordinary clarity, Il San Pietro di Positano is one of the rare hotels whose site feels genuinely non-negotiable — as though no other arrangement of building and landscape could have produced it. Carlo Cinque, whose family has run the property since it opened in 1970, designed the hotel himself, cutting terraces and passages directly into the cliff so that the 60 rooms cascade down the rockface in a series of staggered levels, invisible from the coast road above and discovered only by a private elevator shaft bored through the mountain. The aerial view reveals the full ambition of the project: a tennis court improbably levelled into the rock, a private beach platform at sea level, and gardens planted into every available ledge. The interiors draw heavily on the local craft tradition of the Amalfi Coast, with hand-painted Vietri ceramic tiles covering the floors in geometric diamond patterns of cobalt, emerald, and white — each room slightly different from its neighbour. Furniture runs to white-lacquered frames with upholstery in fuchsia and Capri blue, paired with forged-iron chandeliers and Murano glass lamps that carry more than a trace of 1970s Italian resort sensibility. The terrace restaurant, its green-painted colonnade hung with antique iron lanterns and open on three sides to the Tyrrhenian, maintains the unhurried formality that has defined this stretch of coastline for half a century.

Il San Pietro di Positano Reviews

"We absolutely loved every minute of our stay at Il San Pietro and the hotel and staff exceeded our expectations! Andrea Zana, GM, is a constant presence ensuring the highest of standards which makes this resort in a class of its own. The beach club is fantastic, you would be hard pressed to find anything quite like it. We brought our two college aged sons (20 & 18) who took enormous advantage of diving into the crystal clear sea water, playing tennis and using both indoor and outdoor gyms. Pictures do not do it justice! The breakfasts are also in a league of their own. We loved Carlino for lunch and Zass is a must for dinner. The setting and attention to detail is what sets this hotel apart from all others. We can’t wait to return."

"Il San Pietro never ceases to hit all marks. This isn't just staying at a hotel, it is a total curated lifestyle. The staff is exceptional led by GM Andrea Zana, the rooms are perfect, the facilities are top notch including the private beach, swimming pool and tennis court. The tennis court is so special on the Bay of Sorrento that Roger Federer played when we were there. This is how 5 star living and hospitality should be done. The staff continues to return every year to make the experience for the guests. This is without doubt the best hotel in Italy, if not in all of Europe."

"If you are coming to Italy please please do not hesitate to add this hotel to your wish list! Positano is a magical place in its self but the hidden gem in the cliffs is Il San Pietro. I have travelled the world and have no hesitation in saying this place is a little bit of heaven on earth and the people/team are the very best you will ever find to welcome, serve and make your stay incredible. I have visited this beautiful hotel 3 times over a 20 year period and the staff I first met are still there today greeting me and my husband with warmth and a big hug and smile. The hotel is pure class, elegant and stylish in an honest and authentic Italian way. If you are lucky enough to get a room … snap it up as the hotel often gets repeated customers who booked again and again before they leave to head back home. I hope if you read this you don’t think twice and enjoy your stay as much as we have. 10/10"
