PB hotel design editorial

Carved into a sheer limestone cliff between Positano and Praiano, where the rock face drops almost vertically into water of extraordinary clarity, Il San Pietro di Positano is one of the rare hotels whose site feels genuinely non-negotiable — as though no other arrangement of building and landscape could have produced it. Carlo Cinque, whose family has run the property since it opened in 1970, designed the hotel himself, cutting terraces and passages directly into the cliff so that the 60 rooms cascade down the rockface in a series of staggered levels, invisible from the coast road above and discovered only by a private elevator shaft bored through the mountain. The aerial view reveals the full ambition of the project: a tennis court improbably levelled into the rock, a private beach platform at sea level, and gardens planted into every available ledge. The interiors draw heavily on the local craft tradition of the Amalfi Coast, with hand-painted Vietri ceramic tiles covering the floors in geometric diamond patterns of cobalt, emerald, and white — each room slightly different from its neighbour. Furniture runs to white-lacquered frames with upholstery in fuchsia and Capri blue, paired with forged-iron chandeliers and Murano glass lamps that carry more than a trace of 1970s Italian resort sensibility. The terrace restaurant, its green-painted colonnade hung with antique iron lanterns and open on three sides to the Tyrrhenian, maintains the unhurried formality that has defined this stretch of coastline for half a century.

"Our fifth time staying here and we leave each time amazed by the overall experience. We can’t wait to return again next year."

"Having stayed at Il San Pietro for many years, it remains an absolute favorite of mine and quite simply one of the most incredible hotels I have ever visited. Nestled into the cliffs of Positano, the arrival sets the tone for the entire experience: arriving at the bottom by boat straight from Capri, then ascending right up through the heart of the cliff via their iconic elevator into paradise. Every single detail of this family-run hotel is executed to perfection. The family and their team do an extraordinary job, remaining consistently hospitable, genuinely kind, and wonderfully welcoming year after year. The amenities are second to none. They feature a massive organic garden where they grow all of their own vegetables, which are then used in the incredible hotel meals. There is a fantastic tennis court, and down at the bottom of the cliff sits the most breathtaking sun lounge area I have ever seen in my life—the perfect spot to watch the yachts go by or arrange to take one of the hotel's boats out on the water. If you are looking for luxury, charm, and unmatched Italian hospitality, Il San Pietro is truly peerless. An unforgettable experience from start to finish!"

"Just coming back from another unforgettable stay at Il San Pietro. Every year, I wish I could leave a 6-star review! The combination of utmost comfort, genuine hospitality, traditions passed through generations, and meticulous attention to every detail keeps Il San Pietro as the unchallenged #1 on our travel list. I could write pages about the unique and beautiful room designs, the exceptional service throughout the hotel, or the delicious steak Florentine at Zass. Instead, I’ll share one small example that shows why this hotel is like no other. Our first trip to what has become our “home away from home” was in 2008. On that visit, we met many couples who had been returning to this incomparable property for years — even decades. Now, 18 years later, my wife and I are meeting the next generation of Il San Pietro devotees. One day by the pool, we chatted with a younger couple about their first visit. The wife mentioned to pool manager Pasquale that her bathing suit had blown off the terrace during a storm the day before. She thought nothing more of it — until, just 20 minutes later, Pasquale appeared with her bathing suit neatly folded. If you’ve seen photos of Il San Pietro, you know it’s built into a cliff with a serious vertical drop outside the terraces and balconies. We’ll never know how Pasquale found it, but the fact that he even thought to look says everything about the hotel’s philosophy. Special thank you to Andrea, Juliano, Lorenzo P, Alfredo and many others for always making us and our friends feel so incredibly welcome - we can’t wait to return!"

"We've been fortunate to stay at many of the world’s finest hotels, and Il San Pietro is, without question, the best hotel we've ever experienced. Everything about this property is extraordinary. The entire team from the owners Vito and Carlo, the amazing GM, Andre and Reservations Manager Lorenzo make you feel like family. The property itself is breathtaking. Built into the cliffs with spectacular views of the Amalfi Coast, the views are unforgettable. The food is exceptional, from breakfast overlooking the sea to unforgettable dinners. What truly sets Il San Pietro apart isn’t just the luxury—it’s the feeling. Every detail has been thoughtfully considered, and every experience exceeds expectations. It’s rare to find a hotel that combines world-class amenities with such authentic warmth and hospitality. You do not feel like a guest, you are in fact family. An unforgettable experience and the gold standard by which I’ll judge every hotel from now on."
