PB hotel design editorial

What began as the Sersale family's private summer residence has never really stopped feeling like one. Le Sirenuse, the 58-room hotel carved from an eighteenth-century palazzo cascading down Positano's cliffside, was converted by the family themselves in 1951 and has remained in their hands ever since — a continuity that shapes everything from the collection of antique prints on the bedroom walls to the way terracotta pots spilling with bougainvillea punctuate every terrace balustrade. The building's distinctive crimson and white facade, with its arched loggias and wrought-iron balconies picked out in scrolling ironwork, gives the property an identity so specific to this stretch of the Amalfi Coast that it has become, for many, the visual shorthand for Positano itself. Inside, the interiors maintain the atmosphere of an inherited home assembled over generations rather than designed in a single act. Rooms are furnished with gilded four-poster beds draped in ikat and blue-and-white printed fabrics, their floors laid in traditional Vietri ceramic tiles in geometric patterns of cobalt and cream. Antique marquetry commodes and oil portraits of Neapolitan noblemen anchor the suites in a southern Italian domestic tradition. The pool terrace, dressed with lemon trees in oversized terracotta urns and teak sun loungers set against majolica-tiled paving, opens to an uninterrupted view across the Tyrrhenian toward Li Galli — the islands that, legend holds, were once home to Homer's sirens.

About

Le Sirenuse is a wonderful place from which to enjoy the simple pleasures of Positano and the spectacular Amalfi Coast. John Steinbeck, who visited in 1953, wrote 'Positano bites deep. It is a dream place that isn't quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.'

"We had an amazing time at Le Sirenuse. It was my wife’s dream to come there and it suddenly became my dream when we arrived. Thank you"

"We stayed here in September for our honeymoon and the shower glass in our room suddenly shattered. My husband narrowly avoided being hurt. The staff cleaned it up, but the next morning the manager questioned if we had touched the glass instead of apologizing. The manager/owner was way to passionate on explaining how special their glass were and that it shouldn’t hurt us even if my husband were in the bathroom. It was a really upsetting experience, especially given the cost and reputation of the hotel. The manager/owner offered 50% the second night and that was it. Hilarious. Sharing this so future guests should avoid this hotel if you care about your own safety. At $3.5k a night, this hotel isn’t worth it and they need a serious renovation considered how poorly the shower glass installed, which lead to it being exploded randomly. The chance is never 0% and you stay at your own risk."

"This was a last minute trip to celebrate a milestone birthday. Le Sirenuse is nothing less than magical. It is a reprieve from a chaotic world that transports you to a simpler, yet more opulent era. The rooms…the views…the service, are all extraordinary. The Staff could not be more gracious or accommodating. From evening cocktails at Aldo’s with a postcard picture landscape, to the phenomenal food and presentation at La Sponda, I’ve found no other Resort in the world compares to this magnificent property. Thank you Le Sirenuse…we’ll be back next June and are already counting down the days."

"Often we walk into stunning hotels in the most perfect setting, but rarely we walk into hotel that also has its own soul and captures our heart. The family and designers of this magnificent place fell in love with their guests and then design for them not the other way and that is a rare find! I will not write on the food and accommodation because it was simply put, perfect, from the fresh and highest of quality ingredients to the most thoughtful design and details, I’ve never been to a place that was simply perfect in every way. Their people are incredible and will welcome you with open arms and big heart. I will mention how they thoughtfully care for you, the guests with all the small gestures they do for you as they set your room, before bed time, the way they design the windows in your room to enjoy the setting but to enjoy your quiet too. All the endless extras no one else does for you… The experience felt like a gift you gift yourself, it’s a treat, a celebration of comfort and joy!"

"Romantic cliffside icon with faultless service, breezy rooms and terraces that frame the bay; reserve well ahead, linger over breakfast, and time dinner to catch the lights coming on across Positano."
