PB hotel design editorial

Franco Zeffirelli lived here. The great director spent decades at this clifftop compound above Positano's Laurito beach, entertaining Luchino Visconti, Maria Callas, and Audrey Hepburn beneath the umbrella pines that still crowd the terraces down to the Tyrrhenian. Villa TreVille — three connected villas cascading down volcanic rock to a private cove — carries that history in its bones, and the current incarnation as a boutique hotel of around eighteen rooms makes no attempt to erase it. The aerial view reveals just how improbably the property clings to the cliff face, whitewashed volumes half-swallowed by Mediterranean vegetation, a small pool cantilevered above the water on a balustraded terrace that belongs more to a patrician private garden than to any hotel typology. Inside, the rooms work a palette of saturated sea colours — cobalt blue headboards with baroque carved crests against white barrel-vaulted ceilings, or turquoise linen and curtains over antique majolica tile floors in amber and cream — each referencing the Neapolitan decorative tradition without tipping into pastiche. Antique wood-bladed ceiling fans, wrought-iron wall sconces, and the persistent geometry of encaustic floor tiles ground the interiors firmly in southern Italian vernacular. The beach terrace, its white pergola hung with brass lantern pendants and flanked by cobalt ceramic urns planted with citrus, captures exactly the atmosphere Zeffirelli would have staged himself: theatrical, warm, and completely, convincingly Mediterranean.

About

Villa TreVille provides a unique, boutique hotel experience within a historic, oceanfront estate of about two hectares (five acres) in one of the most fascinating and exclusive places in the world: Positano on Italy's storied Amalfi Coast. This private paradise has an accommodation complex of four independent houses: Villa Bianca, Villa Rosa, Villa Azzurra and Villa Tre Pini. The villas contain a total of 15 guest suites, two with private gardens. Each suite is named after a special guest who has left his or her mark in the annals of the estate and on the arts world, their achievements honoured and recalled in part through the furnishings and art objects, with atmospheres further enhanced by the particular spaces and settings and uses of light and colour. Guests have exclusive access to the seaside sundecks and the dock for the estate's private motor launch through elevators and stone stairways cut into the landscaped, rocky promontory. The villas and amenities are artfully in harmony with the cliffside gardens and pathways that invite exploratory strolls between pergolas laden with vines and cascades of bougainvillea, where every turn can reveal touches of traditional craftsmanship and creative imagination. There are the original Vietri antique ceramics, or exacting reproductions, and extensive handiworks of local artisans such as the hand-painted plates produced exclusively for Villa TreVille by Rosalinda di Sorrento or the glasses made for the house by Venini, the historic Venetian manufacturer of glassware in Murano. The refurbishment of the entire property initially was under the artistic direction of Franco Zeffirelli, the opera and movie maestro who lived on the estate for 35 years. The work subsequently was continued with meticulous attention to essential details by the former proprietor, Giovanni Russo, who was advised by architect Fausta Gaetani, a friend of Mr. Zeffirelli's and a frequent guest at Villa TreVille.

"My experience at Villa Tre Ville was simply exceptional. The property is a true gem — elegant, refined, and surrounded by a peaceful atmosphere that makes it perfect for a relaxing getaway. The location is stunning, offering breathtaking views and a sense of privacy while still being within easy reach of the heart of Positano. The rooms are beautiful, spacious, and impeccably clean, with tasteful décor that perfectly blends classic charm and modern comfort. Every detail feels carefully considered, creating a warm and luxurious ambiance. Breakfast was outstanding, with fresh, high-quality products and a wonderful selection to start the day in the best possible way. A special mention goes to the staff: professional, welcoming, and always attentive, making every guest feel genuinely cared for. The outdoor areas and terraces are simply spectacular — ideal for relaxing moments while enjoying the incredible scenery. Overall, an extraordinary experience that exceeded all expectations. I highly recommend this hotel and would absolutely love to return!"

"As someone who has stayed several times at Villa TreVille and enjoyed it thoroughly, I can confirm that this is a very special place for those visiting the marvellous Costiera Amalfitana area. No doubt you will love every minute of it. However, I was disappointed to read on the website a claim implying that your room would offer views of the sea from Positano (true) to Amalfi (untrue): there is no way whatsoever one can get the slightest glimpse of Amalfi from Villa TreVille or anywhere around…"

"Every corner of this magical place took our breath away. So grateful for this unforgettable experience. The staff made our stay memorable with their remarkable attentiveness and excellent service. Throughout the property, the décor was exquisite and radiated sophisticated elegance. The water taxi provided smooth rides to Positano on demand, and the concierge team arranged unforgettable tours and personalized activities. Staying in the Tosca Suite was a dream. We enjoyed a private terrace with breathtaking views of Positano, a beautifully designed view bathroom and shower, luxurious bedding, and thoughtful details at every turn. Both the Bianca Bar and Maestros Restaurant provided an exceptional cocktail and dining environment with high-quality cuisine, reflecting the hotel's dedication to excellence. The spa, scenic pool, and lounge chairs situated on the rocks with views of Positano offered a tranquil setting to enjoy the warm October climate and seaside ambiance, complemented by the opportunity to sample artisanal homemade gelato. Our experience here was truly outstanding—thanks to beautiful interiors, superb service, and excellent food— we can’t wait to return."

"This was our 2nd trip to Villa Tre Ville and oh my how the prices have gone up in 10 years! We split our stay with San Pietro because of this, which ended up being so fun to do both because they're very different, but still very much enjoyed our 10 year anniversary stay. What Villa Tre Ville does well is privacy. It is super quiet compared to Il San Pietro. The beach club upgrades they've made are amazing, and we would wait out the Positano day trip crowds at the beach club and then head into town in the evenings. The Caprese cake is out of this world and they kindly delivered it to our room when I had a craving for it. I also really loved the garden they have now. I had read mixed reviews on the food, but honestly everything was fabulous. You'd never believe this (and I almost felt bad ordering it in Italy) but the BURGER was the best burger I've had in my life. The service was also lovely. We did prefer the Downes suite to Nijinsky, which we stayed in this time. Nijinsky is beautiful, but just felt dark and more enclosed to me, even with the windows open. Despite us always saying this is our last trip, we plan to come back again!"
