PB hotel design editorial

Along Bologna's Via dell'Indipendenza, beneath the medieval porticoes that UNESCO recognised as a world heritage site in 2021, a palazzo dating to 1436 has served as the city's most distinguished address for well over a century. The Grand Hotel Majestic già Baglioni was established here in 1912, its terracotta facade and colonnaded street-level arcade folding seamlessly into the continuous covered walkways that define Bolognese urban life. The building's bones — arched openings, rusticated stone columns, piano nobile proportions — impose a grandeur that the interiors have always worked to match rather than subdue. Inside, the Caffè Marinetti anchors the public rooms with sienna marble columns, a stained-glass oculus overhead, and a black granite bar backed by dark mahogany cabinetry, the saffron-upholstered armchairs adding a Bolognese warmth that keeps the room from tipping into austerity. Guest rooms and suites carry gilded Baroque headboards, Murano glass chandeliers, jacquard-draped canopy beds, and herringbone parquet underfoot — a vocabulary of Emilian aristocratic interiors rendered with evident conviction. The internal courtyard, enclosed by climbing greenery and terracotta paving, is furnished with white painted iron chairs and pendant candelabra lanterns, offering one of those rare urban retreats where the city's noise drops away entirely. The property counts 109 rooms across five floors, each sustaining the palace's layered history rather than editing it into something more contemporary.

About

The Grand Hotel Majestic "già Baglioni", the oldest and most prestigious hotel in Bologna, sits in the heart of the city on Via dell’Indipendenza, within walking distance of Piazza Maggiore and the famous Due Torri. This superb five-star deluxe hotel is situated in a Palazzo designed by architect Alfonso Torregiani during the first half of the 18th century and built by order of Cardinal Prospero Lambertini, who later became Pope. The palazzo is in fact, built on top of an ancient Roman road, part of which can be seen within the hotel. The 109 rooms have a mix of antique furniture with modern amenities, a perfect blend of classic Italian style, elegance and hospitality. The 4th floor refurbishment has enriched the hotel with a new range of Junior Suites and Deluxe Room. The style in this case is classic eighteen century classical French.

Grand Hotel Majestic - Già Baglioni Reviews

"What a lovely hotel in the heart of this magnificent city. From the very first point of contact, the Grand Majestic delivered an impeccable experience that set the tone for our entire stay. Lisa and Luigi went above and beyond in helping us plan our long weekend — arranging a wonderful excursion to San Marino, recommending outstanding restaurants (both i Carracci and Diana proved to be absolute gems), and seamlessly coordinating our airport transfers in both directions. That kind of personalised, thoughtful service is rare and truly appreciated. The hotel itself is beautiful — marble throughout, magnificent frescoes, and chandeliers across the elegant interiors. The rooms are equally well appointed, carrying that same sense of timeless, classical luxury. We were delighted to be upgraded to a junior suite — wonderfully styled and genuinely sumptuous. The breakfast spread was excellent, and we particularly loved relaxing in the outdoor area. Throughout our stay, Piero and Palash were consistently helpful and attentive, while Mario’s chauffeur service was smooth, punctual, and professional from start to finish. The Grand Majestic strikes the perfect balance between historic grandeur and warm, personalised hospitality. If you’re visiting Bologna, look no further — this is simply the best place to stay."

"What should have been a wonderful stay in beautiful Bologna turned out to instead be a nightmare. On our third morning of seven at the Grand Majestic I woke up to severe itching from a cluster of bites on my leg. The next morning, a long zigzag line of angry bites on the underpart of my upper arm confirmed that a bed bug had feasted well during the night. After checking out photos and descriptions online, it was easy to conclude that these were indeed bedbug bites. The hotel checked the room and found no bugs, which is often the case at the beginning of an infestation when it is unlikely that the bugs, or their excrement would be visible. Majestic is a clean and beautiful hotel, making it likely that the problem stemmed from a recent guest. We notified the front desk and repeatedly asked them hotel to make an appointment with a dermatologist. These were bed bug bites. Clearly not wanting this confirmed by a dermatologist, they stalled, saying they couldn’t find one. Instead, without telling us, they sent their house doctor of 20 years, they sent. Not only was he not a dermatologist, but his specialty was gerontology. After a brief look, he diagnosed me with contact dermatitis. He said it couldn’t possibly be bed bugs as there were no bugs embedded in my skin. (That would be scabies, not bedbugs.) Additionally, he said that with the high-class of the hotel's clientele such bugs were unthinkable…. both statements outright, provable lies. We paid him $100 for his visit. We then spoke with the hotel manager, David, who told us that with the doctor’s diagnosis and the fact that they didn’t find an actual bug, they bore no responsibility. The worry and discomfort from the bites caused great anxiety from that third morning on, mostly because after Bologna, we were set to stay with friends in Tuscany, and then with relatives in Paris. We notified both of them about the bugs and arranged to stay in hotels instead of risking their exposure, thus incurring further unexpected costs. It was the responsible thing to do. In an effort to limit spreading bugs to our next hotels, before leaving The Majestic, we sent EVERY piece of clothing to be dried on high heat in the hotel (for which they charged) or to be dry cleaned. The cost in total was approximately $1000.00. We asked for a vacuum and vacuumed our luggage, then changed rooms wearing bathrobes from the new room. It was our last night in Bologna and, without a stitch to wear, we were trapped in the room. The Grand Majestic is owned by the corporation, Duetorrihotels s.p.a. They operate several luxury hotels in Italy and their policy is to deny all responsibility unless a bug is found.I found an old post on TripAdvisor from someone who had had the same experience as we, several years earlier. Before leaving Paris for home, to be on the safe side, we put our toiletries and meds into ziplock bags. Upon returning home, we left everything else inside our car and in our luggage. We waiting over two weeks for a warm enough day to leave the car outside in the sun to kill any bugs or eggs we might have still harbor.ed Overkill? Perhaps. But we’d rather that than having introduced bedbugs into our home! Management never offered compensation or apology, because to do so would be to admit they did indeed have bedbugs. Their behavior was corporate and uncaring, ruled by profit, an attitude that seems to prevail in too many places these days. One might even call it Trumpian. As an aside, another friend of ours got bedbugs last year while in Tuscany and their hotel reimbursed them for the entire stay. Long story short, steer clear of the Grand Hotel Majestic in Bologna, no matter how much you want to stay there."

"The Grand Hotel Majestic is conveniently located, steps away from Plaza Maggiore. A perfect location for shopping, historic sites, and fine dining. An historic and beautiful hotel, our Junior Suite was elegantly appointed and very roomy. Linda particularly loved the Italian linen bedding. The entire staff was absolutely spectacular in every way possible. They made our visit to Bologna all the more enjoyable. This five star hotel is a “must stay” in Bologna."

"This is a gorgeous hotel with a fantastic location that became part of our experience in enjoying Bologna. It is on a major pedestrian walk way near the Piazza Maggiore. We had a balcony facing the Cathedral and could see the main square from our room."
