PB hotel design editorial

Le Corbusier designed the building in 1920 as a private villa for the American industrialist J.P. Smeaton Chase — an improbable origin for what became Hotel Punta Tragara, one of the most dramatically sited small hotels in the Mediterranean. Perched on the southern cliffs of Capri directly above the Faraglioni, those three limestone sea stacks that have defined the island's silhouette since antiquity, the ochre-washed terraced structure steps down the rock face in a composition that manages to feel both monumental and entirely of its place. The pool terrace, framed by ancient stone amphorae, Mediterranean pines, and columnar cactus, opens toward open water with a directness that no amount of careful landscaping could manufacture — it is purely a consequence of where the building sits. The interiors carry the warmth of a private house rather than a managed hotel. Bedrooms combine white lime-washed walls, arched ceiling details, and travertine floors with upholstered headboards in taupe linen, sunburst brass wall sconces, and striped kilim-style rugs that introduce quiet Mediterranean colour without forcing a decorative theme. The outdoor bar terrace, shaded by a rusted steel pergola draped in mature wisteria, mixes cream sofas, woven rattan armchairs, and terracotta drum tables in an arrangement that has the informal ease of a well-loved summer terrace — the Tyrrhenian Sea visible through the vine canopy just beyond.

"Firstly, let me start by explaining that you must walk 20 minutes from the center of town to arrive at this hotel. I don’t usually leave negative reviews, but this “luxury” hotel room was such a disappointment I feel compelled to warn others. The photos online promised light-filled, stylish accommodations – what I walked into looked nothing like that. The room was dark, and dingy, outdated furniture that looked like it hadn’t been replaced. The lighting was so poor letting in virtually no natural light. We were brought to our room and within 10 minutes of being in the room called the front desk to let them know that the room was unacceptable and not as described. The woman said “is it because it’s too dark?” I told her the room was dark and dingy. There was a small pain window, even though this was supposed to be an ocean suite. She told me this was the last room. They had no under their abilities until our final day where they could locate the same room in a different area of the hotel. The room was not as advertised. not a luxury hotel a dark dingy room with barely a view and not somewhere I would personally want to stay in Capri for $2800 per night. We spoke with the manager who was unaccommodating and let us know He would not be refunding us, even though we would not be staying at the hotel and immediately checking out. he offered no solution. The biggest insult is the bait-and-switch advertising that bear no resemblance to reality. If you’re looking for comfort, style, or anything remotely close to luxury, do yourself a favor and book elsewhere. This hotel trades on false promises and delivers a dark, dreary nightmare. What a welcome to Capri."

"Beautiful location and friendly staff. The dinner we had at Le Monzu was incredible. For some.rwason in this 1440 s.f. suite, there are no shelves in the bathroom and no hooks in the closet or near the door for jackets and bags. We had a friend send us cake and sparklin wine for our anniversary, which was incredible. The chocolate almond cake was delicious. But....housekeeping took the remaining half of the cake away the morning after. When we asked why, they said it was because of "appearences". They brought us another cake at 2pm that day (yesterday). We barely had 2 slices and that night, housekeeping removed it AGAIN! I am SO pissed off."

"Stayed at Punta Tragara for 3 nights. It’s a beautiful property and we loved the location, which creates some distance from the hustle and bustle of Capri center. You can also easily reach La Fontelina beach club from the hotel by taking the stairs down. Hotel’s pre-arrival communications were very prompt and very much on point. Their front desk and concierge desk arranged for all transfers and dinner reservations. Special thank you to Francesca and Antonio for taking great care of our arrangements prior to and during our stay. As much as we appreciated the property overall and its staff, our Master Deluxe room was less impressive. The bathroom was very large, which was great, but it was at the expense of the room “living” part. There was barely 3 feet distance between the edge of the bed and the wall. The room also came with a spacious patio (and sun beds), but it afforded close to zero privacy so while it looked great, it wasn’t very practical. Lastly, despite supposedly having been recently renovated, the room looked dated and showed clear signs of wear and tear. We shared some pictures upon our departure with the front desk staff. At Punta Tragara’s price point, one would expect true 5-star accommodations. In summary, it’s a great property and it forces you to walk for 10 minutes after dinner, which is a huge plus! But if you find your room subpar upon check in, it’s best to ask to see another room."
