PB hotel design editorial

At the foot of Monte Bianco, where Courmayeur's village centre gives way to a direct sightline across the valley toward the Aiguille Noire, a building sheathed in vertical timber battens presents a facade that is unambiguously alpine yet refuses the folkloric pastiche that burdens so many mountain hotels. Le Massif Hotel & Lodge, which took over and substantially rebuilt an existing structure on the Via Roma axis, deploys that warm larchwood cladding — visible in the images as closely spaced vertical fins running the full height of the upper floors — as both climate response and design statement, the rhythm of the screen lending the exterior a quiet architectural confidence against the drama of the massif behind it. Inside, the interiors calibrate the tension between vernacular material and contemporary restraint with considerable skill. Bedroom walls clad in aged fir planking, their grain silvered and knotted from decades of prior use, anchor a palette of greige upholstery, black-and-white geometric kilim-style rugs, and brass swing-arm reading lamps. The restaurant draws the same vocabulary upward — reclaimed timber ceilings crossed by dark steel beams, column panels inlaid with Valdostan geometric motifs rendered in a tone-on-tone textile — while the indoor pool achieves a different register entirely: pale stone tiling, cove lighting, and a floor-to-ceiling glazed wall framing the snowline beyond, closer in atmosphere to a Nordic bathhouse than to mountain-lodge convention.

Le Massif Hotel & Lodge, Courmayeur Reviews

"Fantastic hotel with 5 star service. The breakfast is excellent along with the dinner in the main restaurant . The spa was also a great addition to all the hotels 5 star facilities and a great way to relax after a hard days skiing . The staff could not do enough for my group of 23 and were there to help with any request especially Federico who arranged every lunch on the slopes and dinner for my big group with excellent recommendations. The main cable car is opposite and the position of the hotel is perfect for skiing and walking into town to eat. This hotel is the best place to stay if you are visiting Courmayeur thoroughly recommended."

"Stayed 4 nights for a long weekend skiing. Hotel is in a fantastic spot for the lifts, literally a 3 minute walk. We left all our boots etc at the lodge on the slopes which is really handy. Service is exceptional, from the minute we checked in they really couldn’t do enough for us. We communicated with Frederico on what’s app and he booked lunch, dinners for us etc. The spa is lovely after a day skiing make sure you book in. Breakfast was nice and we had dinner in the restaurant 1 of the nights, but the restaurant is incredibly hot, to the point it was a little uncomfortable. Our room was as depicted but 2nd floor and there was very little natural light as it faced towards the wooden slats of the exterior. If we stayed again I would definitely ensure that I was not in one of those rooms. Was okay for a few nights but a week would have been too much. Instant coffee rather than nespresso not good either, but they are small things. Would highly recommend."
