PB hotel design editorial

Altholz — the weathered, silver-grey reclaimed timber that defines the vernacular architecture of the Ladin valleys — sets the visual register for Hotel Montchalet before you step inside. Positioned on a forested slope above Ortisei in Val Gardena, the property presents a three-storey chalet mass clad entirely in aged larch planking, its broad overhanging eaves, exposed structural beams, and tiered balconies sitting in genuine conversation with South Tyrolean building tradition rather than merely quoting it. The exterior terracing, fitted with outdoor whirlpools and dark-framed lounge furniture, anchors the building to the landscape with a casualness that feels earned. Inside, the design calibration shifts — altholz wall panels carry into the suites as dramatic accent walls behind deep-buttoned velvet headboards in warm grey, while pale wide-plank oak flooring and cove-lit timber ceiling rafters pull the rooms toward something closer to refined alpine lodge than mountain inn. Freestanding soaking tubs positioned beside floor-to-ceiling glazing connect the bedroom directly to the treeline beyond. The restaurant takes a cleaner approach: white-clothed tables, tufted charcoal dining chairs, and oak floorboards are set against reclaimed timber columns and cove lighting that wraps the ceiling in a continuous amber glow. What Montchalet navigates particularly well is the tension between the rustic material warmth that South Tyrolean guests expect and the calibrated contemporary finish that draws an international clientele to the Dolomites.

"Located in Ortisei, just a walk away from the main avenue in town or the gondolas to Seceda or Alpi di Siusi for Dolomites hiking/skiing, we spent 4 nights but left wishing we could've spent more. Everything at the hotel, from the clean rooms and hallways, to the "chalet vibes", to the amazing staff made this our favorite hotel from our Italian honeymoon. The staff was extremely friendly all around, including housekeeping, front desk, and restaurant. Access to an indoor pool and bar/lounge plus the restaurant on-site was nice. We had the Platin suite and having the steam bath in the bathroom with the hot-tub on the spacious deck/patio was awesome. You receive chamomile tea every night with biscuits prior to bed as well as a turn-down service (separate from the general cleaning performed by housekeeping staff) which was a nice touch and shows their dedication to comfort of their guests. The restaurant also deserves a shout-out - the breakfast was always good, made-to-order, and was included in our package. Wide selection of drinks/food and promptly prepared (nice if planning on hiking/skiing in the morning right after). Also dinner there was really good, we had it included in our package (half-board includes breakfast and dinner) and we left wishing we had used it more - really friendly service at all meal times and food was great. We left dreaming about staying there more and definitely will be back, thank you Montchalet team for making this portion of our honeymoon in Italy even better."

"We stayed 2 nights here and loved it ! The room was very large and comfortable. Very nice sitting area with kitchenette. Very comfortable bed and bedding. The bathroom was huge with big bath tub and great shower with sauna etc… 2 balconies facing different sides so you get 2 views and sun at different times . There is air conditioning a large safe All the materials used in this hotel are of high quality . Nice little touch was the hot camomile tea left in the room with sweet treats for after dinner. The breakfast was really lovely, all nicely presented and delicious Dinner was very good too with lots regional specialties. I must say all the staff were super friendly and helpful and efficient ! There is a garage underneath that is safe and they have a shuttle you can use free at anytime in the day . Most useful ! There is a small pool but lovely and warm and a hot tub outside Spa is great too And facial was amazing ! A true gem as a lot of attention to detail so would definitely recommend A truly luxurious place in every sense"

"A huge thank you to Hotel Montchalet for the most magical 3 night stay. Every single member of staff (reception/ drivers/ bar/ restaurant and cleaning) went out of their way to be attentive to our every need, and always with a smile. We stayed half board and the food was both delicious and beautifully presented. The secluded location gave fabulous views and the ever available, courtesy shuttle allowed us easy access to central Ortesei and ski lifts. Rooms stylish and immaculate. The heated boot room lockers were effective & a good size. WiFi excellent. Honestly the best hotel experience in many years. We will definitely visit again."

"One of the nicest hotels we’ve stayed in. It started with checking in where they unloaded our car while the front desk gave us a tour of the beautifully decorated hotel. Our room had a hot tub and they provided small treats for us, perfect after a day of hiking. The breakfast was as good as you can get, so delicious. Great hotel"

"My husband and I spent 3 wonderful nights at Montchalet and intend to return in the future. We had the room with the Steamshower and 2 balconies and thoroughly enjoyed our stay! I can not say enough wonderful things about the staff - from the driver of the shuttle, the receptionists, bartender, masseuse and especially the wait staff in the restaurant! They felt like family by the end of our stay. Their attention to detail and service is first class! We ate dinner in the hotel all 3 nights, with the last night being room service, excellent each time. We found the selection on the menus to be excellent. Breakfast was delicious and loved the variety. Can not say enough good things about Montchalet."
