PB hotel design editorial

Somewhere behind the Renaissance loggia — its groined vaults amber with candlelight, Corinthian columns rising from flagstone, a classical statue glimpsed through iron-scrolled glass doors — is a fifteenth-century Florentine palazzo that has changed hands among noble families for centuries before becoming Al Palazzo del Marchese di Camugliano. The building sits in the Santa Maria Novella quarter, one of the city's most patrician addresses, and its architecture has been left to carry the weight of that history rather than softened into something more legible as a hotel. The interiors move between registers — a frescoed sala where trompe l'oeil architectural perspectives in grey and ochre climb the full height of the walls above herringbone parquet, and quieter garden rooms where walnut four-poster beds with gilded pineapple finials and ivory silk drapes face directly onto a private courtyard garden with a stone fountain. Terrazzo floors inlaid with warm aggregate appear in the entrance halls alongside Murano glass chandeliers and carved plaster overdoors bearing heraldic devices; blue-and-white Chinese export porcelain arranged on lacquered console tables introduces an eighteenth-century cosmopolitan note that many Florentine noble households actively cultivated. The effect throughout is less hotel than private residence opened by an unusually cultured family — the transition between guest room and loggia to garden so seamlessly handled that the city outside feels, for a moment, genuinely distant.

"Such a privilege to stay in this gorgeous palazzo again; beautifully decorated and with such a delightful team running it. I have found nothing comparable in any other hotel I have stayed in around the world. From the warm welcome of Frederica and the candlelit courtyard when you arrive, the sumptuous bedrooms and public lounges, to the juice, cakes and pastries thoughtfully left out for guests during the day. All truly wonderful. My particular thanks go to the warm service of Jade and Katariina at breakfast and the charming man who brought little biscuits for the turndown service. All the staff are delightful - unobtrusive yet attentive."

"Amazing, beyond our expectations. This is a jewel of a hotel, located on a small street in the center of Florence. With only 11 rooms, it never feels crowded, and it is most certainly worth the splurge. This property is an ancient palace, refurbished with taste and elegance. As for installations, they have put in place efficient heating systems, which (we travelled in January-February) were most welcome. Water pressure and water temperature are on point. The decor is to die for, you'll feel like a "contessa". Amenities are as you would expect from a modern 5-star hotel, from laundry service to anything you would need. Do not skip breakfast, by the way. You can find great coffee and pastries outside, of course, but the luxury of having someone bring your order of scrambled eggs, freshly cut fruit, juice, or cold cuts is the best way to start the day. A lovely cortile (outside patio) is the best place to relax after shopping or visiting museums, and a couple of common areas offer you a great resting place inside as well. I am aware that I am gushing but this is truly a gem of a hotel. The staff is also most kind, and everyone was patient with our limited Italian and when needed, spoke perfect English and Spanish. On the practical side, the reservation process was smooth, they replied promptly to all my queries, all details for check-out went without a hitch and in short, this is my home in Florence for any future visits without a doubt."
