PB hotel design editorial

For over a century, the boys of a Florentine boarding school looked out from these limestone-framed windows onto terraced Baroque gardens falling away toward the city below. When Collegio alla Querce, Auberge Resorts Collection opened in 2025, the challenge facing Spanish father-son firm Esteva i Esteva was not invention but translation — converting three adjacent 16th-century UNESCO-listed buildings into 83 rooms without erasing the institutional dignity that gave the place its character. They succeeded by treating preservation as a design act rather than a constraint: the chapel, theatre, coffered ceilings, and frescoes all remain, and the courtyard garden, planted with ancient olive trees and punctuated by a contemporary stone wreath sculpture, carries the atmosphere of a cloistered academy rather than a resort. The interiors, handled by Florentine firm ArchFlorence, move between registers with genuine intelligence. The restaurant unfolds beneath a vaulted arcaded gallery where full-grown olive trees push through the floor plan and terracotta amphorae catch afternoon light against steel-framed windows — a room that feels simultaneously ancient and composed. Guestrooms range from the warmly layered, with landscape murals bleeding into real views of the Arno valley, to suites with iron four-poster frames and working fireplaces that recall the building's earlier life as private rooms for privileged scholars. The bar, lined with gilt portrait frames and amber-lit shelving, anchors the whole project in something resembling a gentleman's study — worn, curated, entirely specific to this place.

"If I could award more than five stars, I would do so without hesitation. My stay at Collegio alla Querce can be summarized into one word: dreamlike. From the moment of booking to our final checkout, every detail was divine, the service was impeccable, and the experience set a new, exceptional standard for what a luxury hotel should be. I chose Collegio as the setting for my proposal, and it was the best decision I could have made. Once I shared my plans, the staff (specifically Ilaria and Chiara) stepped in with such grace and expertise that I felt completely at ease. They orchestrated every detail of a private moment on the Altana terrace, overlooking the iconic Florence skyline and the rolling Tuscan countryside. The level of care here is deeply personal. On the night of our engagement, we returned to find our bed beautifully decorated with rose petals and a thoughtful gift of chocolate-covered strawberries. However, the most touching moment came on our final morning. Our breakfast server, who had been off for a few days, greeted us with a radiant smile; she told us the entire staff had been buzzing with excitement about our news. That sense of shared joy and genuine professionalism from the whole team is truly rare. The property itself is a masterpiece. Our room was the perfect blend of historical elegance and modern luxury. The bathroom, featuring heated floors and a shower that provided arguably the best bathing experience of my life, was a particular highlight. If you're looking for impeccable, world-class service in Florence, look no further."

"Our stay at Collegio alla Querce in Florence was simply exceptional. From the moment we booked, the team went out of their way to make everything effortless, offering itinerary advice and arranging transportation. Upon arrival, we were delighted with a room upgrade and given the chance to tour additional suites, which felt incredibly thoughtful. Our room had a lovely welcome beverage and treats waiting for us, which was such a warm and personal touch. The property itself is stunning—elegant, historic, and impeccably maintained—and the staff made us feel genuinely welcome at every turn. Meals were consistently delicious, and every detail was handled with care, leaving us with a perfect 10/10 experience."

"Calm luxury and personalized attention are the best ways to describe this property and staff. Upon arrival at the top of the driveway, we entered this stunning pebble tec driveway that wound its way down to the entrance to the hotel lined with cypress trees, rosemary and hardscaping. This property was a former boarding school that was converted to this stunning masterpiece perched on an elevated site with views of Florence. Auberge properties are known to have converted properties into these unusual hotel properties and this one exceeded our expectations. We were warmly greeted by the concierge team who took care of our every whim during our stay. It wasn't just their job to take care of our needs. The staff anticipates needs rather than react to requests from guests. The entire staff addressed us by name at each encounter and was genuinely warm. Our suite was a home away from home with the softest towels, amazingly comfortable mattress and linens, a gigantic bath featuring double sinks, separate free standing soaking tub and shower behind a separate door. The quality finishes are seen throughout the property including moldings, flooring, built ins, bath finishes, and fixtures. Gorgeous! The food was as expected, fresh and delicious. The bar areas were stocked with any wine you could want and bar bites were tasty. The pool was empty but the area featuring perimeter cabans is gorgeous. The fitness center is equipped with everything you need to feel your best. The team is clearly committed to excellence and it shows. Thank you for the sincere, genuine attention during our stay. The entire staff made it a place of comfort and truly memorable."
