PB hotel design editorial

A Byzantine tower and a circular sixth-century structure known as the Pagliazza — once a prison, possibly a baptistery, its exact origins still debated by Florentine historians — form the architectural core around which Hotel Brunelleschi was built in 1986. The property sits within meters of the Duomo, and the upper-floor rooms make that proximity almost disorienting: Brunelleschi's own dome fills the window frame at dusk in a view that no amount of interior design could rival or should try to. Architect Italo Gamberini oversaw the conversion, threading contemporary hotel infrastructure through layers of Roman, Byzantine, and medieval fabric, with the Pagliazza tower preserved as one of the most unusual guest suites in Italy and now housing a small museum of archaeological finds uncovered during construction. The interiors strike a confident, if conventional, contemporary note against all that antiquity — floor-to-ceiling padded headboards in taupe and deep aubergine velvet, herringbone parquet underfoot, glass-topped writing desks on polished chrome legs, crystal-based lamps giving bedrooms the composed atmosphere of a well-appointed Milanese apartment. The restaurant spaces are where the building speaks most clearly for itself: exposed pietra serena and rough brick arches frame dining rooms where red velvet round-backed chairs and gilded mirrors acknowledge the grandeur of the surroundings without competing with them. The candlelit courtyard terrace, ringed by medieval stonework and softened with clipped box hedging and oversized lanterns, is among the more atmospheric places to eat in the centro storico.

"This was our third stay at the Brunelleschi Hotel - we love coming back here. The hotel is an oasis of calm and refined elegance in the centre of the town. It is perfectly situated for easily visiting all the sights of Florence , and is very close to the Duomo. Rooms are very well equipped , breakfast is delicious, as are meals in the adjoining restaurant. It is the staff who make this hotel extra special. The girls who clean the rooms, ( to the highest quality), the reception staff , the waiters and the concierges are all exemplary. Nothing is too much trouble .Several of the staff have been here each time we have stayed here, and we regard them as friends. We will return again!"

"After a long day of travel, long lines and NO baggage, we walked into the Brunelleschi. I said here we are, but with nothing else. They immediately started to care for us, taking a copy of our lost luggage report and assuring us that our room would have everything we needed to be comfortable. Although our room was not yet ready, we were hungry and the beautiful patio was beckoning. After a quick bite to eat and a couple of glasses of pinot grigio, our room was ready. They escorted us so we knew how to make our way (two elevators), and once we entered, we were home for 4 nights. Not only did we have ample supplies of toothpaste, etc., but a bottle of prosecco awaited us. Our view of the Duomo and Bell Tower were stunning. It was just perfect. Later, after checking with the airline, I went back to the desk and told them my update. Raffaele was now at the concierge desk. He told me that there was no need to check back with the airline, that they would do that and keep me informed. They had all my information. And they did exactly that. Every day, Raffaele and his team reached out to British Airways and let me know exactly what the update was. By day 2, we had one bag (my husband's), and by Day 3, mine had arrived. Thank goodness for the H & M nearby. I cannot give enough thanks and praise to Raffaele and the team at the concierge desk at the Brunelleschi. Service overall at the hotel was excellent. They actually ruined it for us at the other very nice hotels we stayed at on our journey. From assisting with restaurant reservations, following up with one when I was upset about the service (Raffaele made sure that the restaurant made it up to me with a bottle of Chianti....totally NOT necessary but incredibly gracious. I carried it all the way home), giving recommendations on travel to Siena, on and on, they were simply fabulous. On our last night, we happened to be outside when Raffaele was leaving for the weekend. A quick hug and kisses on both cheeks, I felt like I was saying goodbye to a friend. The hotel has history, quirks, the furniture may be a tad worn, the food on the bar menu may not be my absolute favorite (we did not order off the Michelin star rated menu), BUT, the next time I return to Florence, I will definitely stay at the Brunelleschi. The staff, starting with the front desk and Raffaele's team are exemplary, the rooms bright and clean, beds comfortable, view and location exceptional. What more can you ask when visiting such a beautiful city but a beautiful stay...."
