PB hotel design editorial

Palazzo Paoletti, a five-floor neoclassical building completed in 1895 by architect Tito Bellini, sits close enough to Santa Maria del Fiore that the Duomo's polychrome marble facade becomes a kind of design brief for everything inside. Hotel La Gemma, which opened in 2023 within these walls, commissioned Milan's Design by Gemini Studio — Elena and Giulia Sella — to translate that cathedral geometry into 39 rooms and suites, drawing emerald, blush, and ivory directly from the Duomo's green Prato serpentine, pink Rosa di Maremma, and white Carrara marble. The result is an interior language grounded in a specific Florentine chromatic tradition, worn lightly enough that it feels like discovery. The rooms layer that palette with botanical wallpapers printed in silvery grey-green, arched velvet headboards, herringbone oak floors, and brass wall sconces with the double-cone silhouette that places them squarely in mid-century Italian lighting tradition. The bar goes further into the commitment: deep forest-green panelled walls, a mirrored ceiling that doubles the back bar's glow, a curved emerald velvet banquette, and crystal lamp shades that read as Art Deco through a contemporary lens. Outside, a terrace fitted with green velvet banquette seating and iron bistro chairs faces the medieval stonework of the surrounding streets, tropical planting giving the whole arrangement an almost Mediterranean looseness that the interior's precision quietly earns.
