PB hotel design editorial

Piazza Massimo D'Azeglio, one of Florence's most composed residential squares, was laid out in the late nineteenth century as the city expanded beyond its medieval core — and the patrician villa that became Hotel Regency belongs entirely to that moment. The building's rusticated pietra serena facade, arched windows framed in dressed stone, and wrought-iron entrance gates carry the measured authority of late Ottocento Florentine civic architecture, the kind of address where merchant families and minor nobility once kept winter quarters. Opened as a hotel in 1959 and long affiliated with the Relais & Châteaux collection, the Regency has 35 rooms across three floors, and its interiors maintain a determinedly residential atmosphere — the property functions less like a hotel than like a private house whose owners happen to have impeccable taste. Inside, the design vocabulary is consistently aristocratic: carved white-painted headboards with antiqued mirror panels above, deep crimson carpets, velvet bergère chairs in burgundy, and brass table lamps with pleated shades standing on marble-topped nightstands. The restaurant carries the same palette — claret walls, white-clothed tables, and a plaster ceiling with period geometric detailing — opening through full-height glass doors onto a walled garden planted with clipped hedges, stone fountains, and mature shade trees. Bronze-framed terrace furniture upholstered in cream canvas completes the terrace, a private green enclosure that somehow keeps the city entirely at bay.

About

Once upon a time when the city of Florence was the Italian Capital, Hotel Regency served as a retreat to high government officials and ministers of the State. Today, the nineteenth century villa located in the heart of Florence is a five star property and a long time member of the prestigious "The Small Luxury Hotels". The hotel overlooks pristine Piazza D'Azeglio, framed by monasteries, ancient cloisters, famous museums, the Synagogue and, even more impressive, maintains the private villa-like air, ensuring travellers a memorable experience.

"A lovely small hotel located in a quiet residential area within walking distance of the centre. Very helpful and attentive staff."

"If you are considering booking this hotel for your upcoming trip to Florence, “Just do it now”! The hotel encapsulates everything you would look for in a small luxury establishment but of particular note would be the thoroughly exceptional staff whose attention in every regard was faultless. This is clearly one of the best managed hotels anywhere. An ideal location within easy walking distance of everything in the Centro Storico yet on a quiet residential square, Hotel Regency allows one to feel how it might be to live in Florence."

"Amazing hotel on the quiet side of Florence , on the edge of a park… in a high end residential area. Housed in a prior embassy with old world charm, amazing team, luxurious amenities and valet parking which is a plus in Florence ! Also they can accommodate 3 people in a room with a cot , which is a nice find for families!"

"Cute hotel and friendly staff. It cost us a lot as we were there on Christmas Day. The bathrooms were lush by European standards. The location, while a bit further from city center, felt safe. Staff was very polite and helpful. We ended up paying 1500+ USD for a suite that included a king sized bed and an extra bed. Beds were comfortable."

"It was a perfect stay with the family in the penthouse suite in December. Great walking location, quiet neighborhood. intimate grounds. The lovely concierge lady was super helpful. She even gave us a whatsapp number to contact her to make reservations in real time. The only thing spotty was the quality/presentation of food sent for room service. However, the included breakfast in the restaurant was superb."
