PB hotel design editorial

Via Tornabuoni has been Florence's most patrician address since the Medici held court nearby, and the Palazzo Bartolini Salimbeni — a Renaissance structure whose pietra serena rustication anchors the street's lower register — gives Il Tornabuoni Hotel a provenance that no amount of interior invention could manufacture. What Michele Bönan's design adds to that inheritance is something closer to provocation than deference: a chromatic boldness, rooted in Art Deco geometry, that refuses to genuflect before the building's age. Zigzag wallcoverings in deep ochre, sculptural upholstered headboards, and brass canopy frames set against original timber ceiling beams create a productive friction between the sixteenth century and the nineteen-thirties — two periods that each understood ornament as authority. The restaurant doubles down on that theatrical instinct: deep navy lacquerwork curves around arched brass-framed mirrors that multiply the room into apparent infinity, while herringbone oak flooring and cognac leather banquettes pull the temperature back toward warmth. On the rooftop terrace, gilt iron furniture and polished steel lamp shades catch the last light over the terracotta roofline, the spire of Santa Maria Novella visible through the dusk. Bönan — the Florentine designer whose hand is also visible at Portrait Firenze — treats the palazzo not as a museum to be preserved but as a stage set to be inhabited, room by room, on its own confident terms.

"We had a wonderful time! It is so centrally located. We were able to walk everywhere - like 5 minutes to the Uffizi and the Duomo! The hotel itself is luxurious and lovely. The staff was kind and accommodating."

"Beautiful hotel with an excellent location in Florence. Room size was a bit small, but it was very well-appointed, with elegant decor. Only complaint about the room was there was no drawer storage for clothes. Room was extremely clean. Very friendly staff. The drinks at Butterfly Terrace were extraordinarily expensive, and I would not spend 25 euros again on a cocktail - but the people working there were nice. The worst part about this hotel is they tack on a 'service charge' at the end of your stay, but you have to ask to have it removed, and naturally it felt rude to do so, so we paid over 100 euros in service charges when we checked out (there was also a pre-added on tip at Butterfly Terrace, which we also would have had to ask to remove). A hotel service charge isn't even common in the U.S. (a tipping-oriented culture), much less in Italy - so it really left a bad taste right at the end of the stay."

"Hotel Il Tornabuoni was absolutely exceptional from start to finish. The entire staff made this one of the best hotel experiences I’ve ever had. From the warm welcome by the doorman and bellman to the incredible front desk team who assisted with check-in, restaurant recommendations, and every detail throughout my stay, the service was flawless. The concierge team went above and beyond, especially helping me arrange shipping my luggage back home, which made my travels so much easier. Housekeeping was consistently kind, thoughtful, and attentive. The hotel itself is stunning. The food was incredible, the room was luxurious, and the view of Florence was amazing. The location could not have been more perfect for exploring the city. What truly sets Hotel Il Tornabuoni apart is that they clearly hire the right people. The hotel product is world-class, but the staff is what makes the experience unforgettable. I cannot wait to return."

"We really enjoyed our stay at Il Tornaboni during our stay in Florence. The location is perfect for getting to all the sights and there are so many places to shop and eat nearby. It was hot and very crowded with tourists while we were there so our room was a nice sanctuary to rest and recharge. Room was very spacious and comfortable with good AC, comfortable bed and wonderful bathroom/large tub. The staff was all very friendly and helpful."
