PB hotel design editorial

Via Tornabuoni has been Florence's most patrician address since the Medici held court nearby, and the Palazzo Bartolini Salimbeni — a Renaissance structure whose pietra serena rustication anchors the street's lower register — gives Il Tornabuoni Hotel a provenance that no amount of interior invention could manufacture. What Michele Bönan's design adds to that inheritance is something closer to provocation than deference: a chromatic boldness, rooted in Art Deco geometry, that refuses to genuflect before the building's age. Zigzag wallcoverings in deep ochre, sculptural upholstered headboards, and brass canopy frames set against original timber ceiling beams create a productive friction between the sixteenth century and the nineteen-thirties — two periods that each understood ornament as authority. The restaurant doubles down on that theatrical instinct: deep navy lacquerwork curves around arched brass-framed mirrors that multiply the room into apparent infinity, while herringbone oak flooring and cognac leather banquettes pull the temperature back toward warmth. On the rooftop terrace, gilt iron furniture and polished steel lamp shades catch the last light over the terracotta roofline, the spire of Santa Maria Novella visible through the dusk. Bönan — the Florentine designer whose hand is also visible at Portrait Firenze — treats the palazzo not as a museum to be preserved but as a stage set to be inhabited, room by room, on its own confident terms.

"For different reasons, work, holiday, etc. I have had the chance to visit Florence over 30 times in the last 20 years. This last time it had been a while since I stayed in the city, usually taking day trips from Rome. To my surprise we discovered this amazing hotel right in the center of Via de' Tornabuoni, where all the luxury boutiques are. Just as an example walking out of the hotel cross the street is Montblanc, next to it is Omega, and about 15 meters away is Ferragamo Museum and shop, not to mention all the rest. You are also a 5-10 minute walk from the Ponte Vecchio, and Piazza de la Signoria. The staff at the hotel are extremely nice in a very friendly way, from the doormen to the front desk as well as the restaurant staff. We loved it so much that we stayed there twice in the same trip as we were doing a road trip for three weeks in Italy, so on our way back to Rome, we didnt even hesitate to stay there again. We received the same treatment, they also remembered us. They make everything simple and with a smile. The hotel has a small hotel atmosphere, even though the room we got was large, very large for Florence standards. The decor is very nice, modern but has character. Ive stayed at the Excelsior, St. Regis, Hotel Lungarno, etc. all 5 stars, but this one is new, in the middle of everything, literally, huge rooms and fantastic staff."

"I had an utterly splendid 10-day stay at Hotel Il Tornabuoni. Every aspect of my stay was magical: my room was large, airy, and beautifully appointed; breakfast was healthful and delicious. My room and the entire hotel is meticulously clean. Il Tornabuoni is perfectly located in Piazza di Santa Trinita, steps from the Ponte Santa Trinita and the Arno River and an easy walk to all major sites including the Uffizi Gallery and the Duomo Complex. But by far the best thing about Hotel Il Tornabuoni is its remarkable staff. Everyone from the doormen, to the folks at the front desk, the waitstaff and the cleaners were friendly, helpful, and utterly professional. Il Tornabuoni’s concierges played a major role in making my visit so wonderful. They are incredibly knowledgable, advising me on everything from little visited churches, to day-trip itineraries and restaurants. Federica Bini, in particular, made my stay in Florence memorable. In sum, I can’t imagine a hotel better experience. Hotel Il Tornabuoni is an utter delight!"
