PB hotel design editorial

A stone's throw from Piazza della Repubblica, one of Florence's most quietly distinguished Renaissance palazzi has been transformed into a twelve-suite residence hotel that keeps its civic identity fully intact. The heraldic cartouche visible on the corner facade, the pietra serena window surrounds, and the deep-bracketed cornice all date from the sixteenth century, when the Vecchietti family — Florentine merchants and patrons of some consequence — commissioned a building whose corner position on Via degli Strozzi announced their ambitions to the whole city. Palazzo Vecchietti opened as a hotel in 2012 under the direction of designer Michele Bönan, who treated the conversion less as a hospitality project than as the careful furnishing of a private Florentine home. Bönan's interiors balance the palazzo's monumental bones — stone-flagged entrance hall, massive pietra serena chimneypiece crowned with a family crest, double-height ceiling volumes — against a contemporary palette that refuses pastiche. The lobby draws the eye toward a Baroque gilt console alongside a clean-lined linen sofa, the pairing entirely unselfconscious. Guestrooms carry the same composed tension: deep velvet curtains in aubergine or navy pooling onto oak floors, framed figurative drawings hung like a private collection, upholstered headboards in muted tones that let the architecture speak. The breakfast room introduces red-striped silk drapes, tobacco leather chairs, and gilt-framed portraits against white coffered ceilings — a room that carries the atmosphere of a Florentine scholar's dining salon rather than a hotel amenity.

"This is our second time at this hotel. It is beautiful and in a great location. But what makes it really special is the staff. Samanthi makes a great cappuccino and Leonardo is very knowledgeable about the history of the city and the hotel. We learn something new from him every time we come. We always feel so comfortable and pampered here. We can't wait to come back next year."

"This property is spectacular. The staff were exceptional. Ideally located to the main plaza with dining, shopping, and museums/catherdrals all within walking distance. The Palazzo Vecchietti is a gem of a property with alot of interesting history. The property is very private as only guests have access to it. That alone is unique, so you can escape the hustle and bustle for some real quiet time when you need a break. The gem of this property are the staff. It started when we arrived and Leonardo gave us a tour and historical overview of the property. Then he sat us down and walked us over the city with a handy map where he also made excellent restaurant suggestions. Carlo the bartender was excpetional and easy to talk to as we bent his ear during most of our stay as we stopped for a night cap every evening. We really can't say enough about the entire staff. The breakfast team were incredibly attentive and helpful. You really felt well looked after at this property. We will definitely come back here if/when we visit Florence again. It was our first time there and we stayed 6 nights and could have stayed longer."

"We recently stayed here on the final night of our 30th anniversary trip through Tuscany. We couldn’t have picked a better capstone stop for exploring Florence and then getting a solid rest before an early morning departure. This luxury, boutique hotel by SLH group has just 16 rooms all within the original city palazzo of the Vecchietti family. The architecture has been preserved. The decor restored. And the property is updated with every expected modern convenience. This hotel has none of the quirks you often find in “old world” European hotels. The staff here were all energetically focused on delivering comfort and hospitality. We especially appreciated Luca’s warm greeting upon our arrival and his helpfulness as we sought to plan our evening and next day’s return to the airport. Our one regret was that we could only stay a single night (this time)."

"Our stay at the Palazzo Vechetti was amazing. The property is gorgeous and the staff is second to none. Tomasso went above and beyond to get us to the hotel when we were unable to navigate the ZTL even walking 20 minutes to "collect us. Jordan at the bar and Samanta hosting breakfast are a pleasure. From the sparkling wine welcome drink while Luca filled us in on the hotels history and must sees while in Florence to checkout, I couldn't have asked for more. The entire staff are just perfect! Thank you Palazzo Vechetti for making our 1st stay in Florence a memorable one ❤️"

"We had the absolute best stay at Palazzo Vecchietti—by far the best hotel experience of our trip. From the moment we arrived, we were treated with such warmth and care. Leonardo, in particular, made us feel truly important and went above and beyond to ensure our stay was perfect. The service throughout was exceptional, and the attention to detail did not go unnoticed. This morning we enjoyed the most incredible breakfast delivered right to our room—such a special way to start the day. Everything was delicious and beautifully presented. We can’t recommend Palazzo Vecchietti highly enough. If you’re looking for luxury, comfort, and genuine hospitality in Florence, this is the place to stay."
