PB hotel design editorial

Few addresses in Florence carry the weight of Lungarno Acciaiuoli, where a medieval tower rises between the hotel's white-rendered facade and the Ponte Vecchio just metres to the right — that particular compression of centuries visible in the exterior image, the Palazzo della Signoria's crenellated tower punctuating the blue-hour sky beyond. Portrait Firenze, the Lungarno Collection's most intimate property, was conceived by Michele Bönan as a private residence rather than a conventional hotel, its 37 suites arranged across six floors of a building whose Arno-facing windows frame one of the most loaded views in European architecture. Bönan's interiors move between two registers: the cool restraint of the guest rooms, where pale grey boiserie panels, dark-stained oak floors, brass-footed velvet sofas, and mid-century armchairs in woven fabric establish a quietly confident domesticity, and the richer atmosphere of the public spaces below. The restaurant pairs whitewashed brick columns against dark-stained timber wall panels, with Tom Dixon-esque brass pendant clusters descending over a mauve curved banquette and dining chairs in sage and slate — a palette borrowed more from 1950s Milan than from Florentine convention. A lounge suite features a full-height onyx fireplace surround, its banded grey-and-cream veining set between flanking dark wood panelling, bronze sculptural figures on brass plinths completing a room that feels closer to a serious private collection than to hotel décor.

"I write this review with ambivalence. I know that it could make it impossible to stay here again. But the whole experience was so superior that to not write a review would feel like a disservice. I have the good fortune of staying at several 5-star hotels each year for work. I can say without a doubt that the Portrait staff went out of its way to make us feel welcome. It seemed like everyone was trying to outdo each other in kindness. From the moment we entered, they asked us if we would like tea, coffee, or water as we checked in. A small gesture, but so important. Every time we left the lobby, someone got up to hold the door and another person asked us if we would like cold water. Each time we returned from touring in the afternoon, there was a candy, cake, or piece of fruit waiting for us. And not one nominal piece, but an abundance for the family. The location along Ponte Vecchio was excellent. The atmosphere was always serene and plush. The rooms and cleanliness were exemplary, as one might expect from a world-class fashion house. The noise level was minimal. I have been to Florence four other times. Each hotel was palatial, with excellent food, and astounding furnishings that befit the city known as the birthplace of the Renaissance. Portrait had all of this, but also a soul of kindness, sophistication, and earnest hospitality. It is not worth staying anywhere else in Florence."

"We would give more than 5 stars if we could! We celebrated our 30th anniversary and a birthday while in Florence and the staff at the hotel made it extra memorable with a room upgrade and treats (champagne /wine/cake/dessert) to help us celebrate. The whole hotel from top to bottom is stunning. The location is perfect to get around the city center and you can’t beat the views of the Arno. We were so comfortable in our room and wanted for nothing during our stay. The entire staff is welcoming and helpful and are truly there to make your stay memorable. Special pluses for me were the Ferragamo bath /skin products and the hair tools! (Had issues with the ones I brought from the states and this saved the day!) Make sure to try a chocolate croissant when eating breakfast.. it’s beyond delicious! We wouldn’t change a thing about our stay and look forward to returning! Grazie Mille for the perfect Florence experience!"

"If a hotel can provide a perfect experience, the Portrait in Florence, Italy proves it is possible. The rooms are beautiful, spacious, and wonderfully appointed. The restaurant is superb with a knock-out breakfast display. But it is the staff that takes this hotel to the level of perfection. Gracious, attentive, welcoming and always at the ready to do anything possible to make the experience enjoyable. Bravo Portrait!!"

"Perfect from beginning to end. Staff are professional, attentive, genuine, caring and polite. Hotel is very well appointed and immaculate and the location is the best. We had a brief but perfect stay and will come back. Only complaint was we were in a lovely suite but the shower was in the bath which for the quality of the hotel and in a suite was a bit budget. Otherwise perfect!"
