PB hotel design editorial

Few addresses in Florence carry the weight of Lungarno Acciaiuoli, where a medieval tower rises between the hotel's white-rendered facade and the Ponte Vecchio just metres to the right — that particular compression of centuries visible in the exterior image, the Palazzo della Signoria's crenellated tower punctuating the blue-hour sky beyond. Portrait Firenze, the Lungarno Collection's most intimate property, was conceived by Michele Bönan as a private residence rather than a conventional hotel, its 37 suites arranged across six floors of a building whose Arno-facing windows frame one of the most loaded views in European architecture. Bönan's interiors move between two registers: the cool restraint of the guest rooms, where pale grey boiserie panels, dark-stained oak floors, brass-footed velvet sofas, and mid-century armchairs in woven fabric establish a quietly confident domesticity, and the richer atmosphere of the public spaces below. The restaurant pairs whitewashed brick columns against dark-stained timber wall panels, with Tom Dixon-esque brass pendant clusters descending over a mauve curved banquette and dining chairs in sage and slate — a palette borrowed more from 1950s Milan than from Florentine convention. A lounge suite features a full-height onyx fireplace surround, its banded grey-and-cream veining set between flanking dark wood panelling, bronze sculptural figures on brass plinths completing a room that feels closer to a serious private collection than to hotel décor.

"A perfect Florence hotel along the Arno, overlooking the iconic Ponte Vecchio. Portrait Firenze places you at the heart of this singular Renaissance city, with the beauty, history, and art of Florence an easy stroll in every direction from your doorstep. We had a spacious, beautifully appointed room with views of the Arno, and the hospitality from every member of the staff was genuinely exceptional. The concierge team arranged private artisan tours, car service throughout Tuscany, and dining reservations — all handled flawlessly and each a memorable experience in its own right. Caffè dell’Oro, the hotel’s restaurant, offers guests a great breakfast, and it’s perfect for an aperitivo or meal with the river as your backdrop on your way in and out of the hotel. A detail worth noting: Portrait is owned by the Ferragamo family, and the hotel is thoughtfully curated with archival fashion photography and celebrity portraits from the mid-20th century. The Ferragamo flagship and museum occupy a landmark building just steps away — a reminder that this is not merely a luxury hotel, but an experience that could only exist in Florence."

"We had an outstanding stay at Portrait Firenze. The hotel is elegant, intimate, beautifully located, and full of that quiet Florentine sophistication that makes you feel immediately at home. What truly made the experience special was the team. Vladimir, Mohammed, Luca, Sara, Carolina, and the entire Lifestyle Team were exceptional from beginning to end. They were warm, thoughtful, proactive, and genuinely attentive without ever being intrusive. Every recommendation felt personal, every detail was handled with care, and they made our stay feel effortless. The location is perfect, right by the Arno and steps from the best of Florence, but the real luxury here is the feeling of being taken care of by people who truly care. It is the kind of hospitality that turns a beautiful hotel into a memorable experience. Thank you to the whole Portrait Firenze team. We left with wonderful memories and would gladly return. A true 5-star experience."

"We had an absolutely perfect three-day family stay at Portrait Firenze. From the moment we arrived, the hotel staff, especially Vladimir, Sara, David and the other Lifestyle Team members made us feel very welcome. Even before we arrived they had helped us book restaurants for two of the evenings and one lunch, and during our stay we conveniently communicated with them over WhatsApp when we needed advice or suggestions. All restaurant recommendations were great and we thoroughly enjoyed all our meals in Florence. At our arrival we were upgraded to a lovely river-side suite with an absolutely amazing view of Ponte Vecchio. This was such a wonderful surprise and we were both incredibly grateful and quite humbled by the gesture. The weather was a bit unreliable all weekend, so it was a real treat to have a large suite to relax in during occasional afternoon rain showers. In the mornings it was magical to wake up and watch the light change as the sun rose over the beautiful city. We had daily breakfasts and two lunches in the hotel restaurant Cafe Dell’Oro and the food was delicious. Marco and his colleagues took great care of us and made sure we had a table outside when the weather was nice, which was no small task since the terrace with its stunning view is very popular. The Lifestyle Team also made an extra effort to make our two children feel welcome with treats for them in the room and by helping them with anything they needed and asked for. We hope to come back soon, and when we do we will definitely stay at Portrait again."

"Had an amazing stay at Portrait Firenze. Everyone was so warm and attentive during our honeymoon stay. Special thanks to Matteo and Rafael for always making us feel taken care of. The housekeeping staff were also amazing and very detail oriented, always keeping the room spotless and adding thoughtful touches throughout our stay. We also loved how the breakfast staff remembered our usual order every morning. It was the little things that really made the stay feel special. Would absolutely stay here again."

"I love posh hotels. This is one of them. From the moment you arrive it is luxury. The team are all very kind. Rafael was so kind and personable. They serve you champagne as you check in. The rooms are luxury, if you spend a bit more to have a river view, it is worth it. Upgrade to a balcony in the summer and you have it made. This hotel is not cheap but to me it is worth it. The linens are like butter the room is spotless, they had welcome champagne and chocolate in the room for us. The towels are thick and like new, the soap is Ferragamo. Just high quality all around. Café delle oro downstairs is delicious and also serves breakfast that is included with the stay. I have reviewed this hotel 1 year ago when we stayed last time and again this time, nothing has changed, they are still luxury."
