PB hotel design editorial

Facing the marble-inlaid facade of Santa Maria Novella across one of Florence's grandest piazzas, the nineteenth-century palazzo that houses The Place Firenze holds perhaps the most quietly privileged address in the city. The hotel's 20 rooms are distributed across a building whose bones — stucco cornicing, painted panel moldings, wrought-iron balconies — have been left to carry their full historical weight, while the interiors introduce a layered domesticity that keeps the atmosphere closer to a well-appointed Florentine apartment than to a grand hotel. Guest rooms shift between two distinct registers: some are finished in dove grey with crystal chandeliers and quilted leather headboards with Art Deco geometry, others in pale celadon with white coffered ceilings and woven leather stools, the colour shifts lending each room a distinct character rather than a uniform house style. The rooftop terrace, low-slung and candlelit, frames Brunelleschi's dome directly over the ridge tiles — an arrangement that feels almost implausible in its proximity. At street level, the JK Lounge terrace extends onto the piazza under cream parasols, with clipped box spheres in timber planters marking the boundary between the hotel's life and the square's. Mismatched porcelain at the breakfast table, olive trees in terracotta, salmon-upholstered chairs against the basilica's geometric facade: the effect is of a household that has been entertaining on this piazza for a very long time and sees no reason to stop.

About

Located in the heart of the city, The Place Firenze is an exceptional haven, more like a sophisticated Home than a hotel, adored by everyone who stays behind its discreet townhouse facade. Inside, it is elegance epitomized, with centuries worth of artifacts and lovingly homemade food served all day in its comfortable lounges. This is where different stylistic philosophies are harmoniously joined together: a Charles X fireplace, objects from the 70s, neoclassical furniture and lamps from the 50s, fit perfectly with the sleek masculine soft-colored décor. In between forays to explore the city, retreat to the hotel for drinks or perhaps a homemade cake. Watch the world go by on the al fresco Terrace in Piazza Santa Maria Novella, relax with a spritz in The Bar or on the private Rooftop Terrace with its citywide views. The Kitchen, with its refined atmosphere, serves excellent organic Tuscan and Italian specialties. The knowledgeable concierge team will happily arrange exclusive and unique experiences.

"Just spent 3 fabulous nights at The Place. Easy walk from the train station, 5-6 minutes. At first I was a bit apprehensive because it’s very small, the entrance is unassuming, no real lobby or reception area, but I was immediately captured by the Place’s charm and warmth and incredible service. This is a true Boutique hotel, very quaint, only about 20 rooms, and it feels more like a home, and has old-style appeal. Firstly the location of the Place is superb. Right on the Piazza Santa Novella, and just a 5-6 minute walk to the Duomo and Piazza Republica etc. We had a standard courtyard room which was lovely, but I did find it a bit small. The bed was super comfortable with amazing pillows and linens. Bathroom was perfect, great shower with all the amenities, plush towels, Dyson hairblower, bathrobes and slippers. AC was great in the room. There just wasn’t much wiggle room to walk around in this room, so next time I would suggest taking a slightly larger room. There was also no coffee machine in the room, so had to go downstairs in morning to the sitting area to get coffee. The breakfast was included and was fabulous, you could eat indoors in the lovely dining area or outside on the piazza. You could basically order anything from the menu, with delicious croissants, and the service was impeccable. Even the dishes, the plates and coffee cups felt old-school and eclectic and we loved it all. What makes the Place so special however is the top-notch service across the board. We were made to feel right at home, like part of the family, and the staff were really so professional and trying to help and please you at every moment. So much warmth and hospitality. Shout out to Sarah and Lily who were so wonderful. I highly recommend staying at The Place without hesitation. It’s THE PLACE to be in Firenze if you like a charming smaller boutique hotel."

"This is a boutique hotel that lives up to its five star rating. Its location a couple of blocks from the train station is very convenient. The quiet rooms are each unique and tastefully decorated. The service is remarkable. One telling detail about the hotel is its support for local artists and craftsmen and their training. Not something that you see everywhere. It is not inexpensive but the experience is worth it."

"Five Stars — An Extraordinary Hotel in Florence I rarely write reviews. Although I rely heavily on them when planning our travels, I have probably written fewer than ten over the past twenty years. Our stay at The Place Firenze, however, was exceptional enough that I felt compelled to share our experience. My wife and I recently spent three weeks traveling throughout Spain and Italy, staying at a number of beautiful, high-end hotels and resorts along the way. Of all the wonderful properties we experienced, The Place Firenze stands among the very best. From the moment we arrived, it exceeded expectations. The Place Firenze is an intimate, five-star boutique hotel that combines elegance, luxury, and highly attentive personal service. We stayed in Room #1, a magnificent suite overlooking the beautiful Piazza di Santa Maria Novella. The suite was spectacular—spacious, elegant, and thoughtfully designed. It included a fireplace, a separate living room, two televisions (including an impressive 75-inch screen that disappeared seamlessly into the furniture), a beautiful bedroom with a king-size bed, a walk-in closet, and an enormous, luxurious bathroom. Upon arrival, we were welcomed with a bowl of fresh fruit, a bottle of champagne, and a fully stocked minibar—all complimentary. These thoughtful touches set the tone for the stay. Giorgio greeted us personally, handled our check-in, and graciously accommodated both an early arrival and a late checkout, making everything effortless from the start. Breakfast was included each morning and served in the hotel’s beautiful restaurant. Instead of a typical buffet, it was a relaxed, sit-down experience with a full menu and excellent service—the perfect way to begin each day in Florence. Throughout our stay, the service was consistently outstanding. Every member of the team was warm, professional, and attentive, always anticipating needs without ever being intrusive. A moment that best reflects the level of hospitality came on the morning of our departure. We had an early flight and needed to leave at 4:00 a.m. Giorgio was there once again to see us off, with fresh coffee ready and a prepared breakfast for our journey. That level of personal care is rare, even among top-tier five-star hotels. The combination of an exceptional suite, ideal location, thoughtful amenities, and consistently attentive service made our stay truly memorable. The Place Firenze is not just a luxury hotel—it is a benchmark for hospitality done right. We would return without hesitation and recommend it to anyone seeking an outstanding stay in Florence. Five stars, without question."

"The staff at The Place were exceptional and welcomed us like family for our stay in Florence. Check in was a breeze, and the hotel concierge made our local dinner reservations seamlessly. The room we enjoyed was fashionably appointed with a comfortable bed and AC, which was a delight given the 100 F degree heat. Food and beverages offered were well above expectations. Overall our stay was exceptional and we will return."
