PB hotel design editorial

Along the Lungarno Vespucci, where the Arno's north bank carries its grandest civic face, a five-storey neoclassical palazzo built in the early nineteenth century has served as one of Florence's most distinguished addresses for well over a century. The St. Regis Florence is housed in what was originally the Grand Hotel, a building whose creamy stuccoed facade, pedimented windows, and colonnade of pilasters along the upper storey carry the measured confidence of Restoration-era Italian urbanism. The interiors were conceived by the New York-based studio of Pierre-Yves Rochon, whose approach here leans into the Florentine Renaissance rather than retreating from it. The results are immersive rather than merely decorative. Arched niches in the guest suites frame large-scale figurative frescoes in earth tones — ochre, sienna, and verdigris — with wrought-iron chandeliers and savonarola chairs in carved walnut reinforcing a period register that stops well short of pastiche. Damask bed runners, Murano glass lamp bases, and nailhead-trimmed nightstands hold the rooms in a specific cultural moment without freezing them. The Winter Garden restaurant unfolds beneath a double-height atrium of gilded coffering and arched glazing, Chinoiserie dining chairs set against a boldly patterned carpet that gives the room its contemporary pulse. In the bar, stone columns frame a circular mahogany counter backed by a trompe-l'oeil garden mural, armillary spheres flanking the space with quiet scholarly wit. The hotel runs to 96 rooms and suites across its upper floors.

"This is a lovely hotel in a great location close the old city centre and overlooking the river. Although it is certainly not a cheap option we found the service to be excellent, in particular the staff were really helpful and friendly. Our rooms was great, nice and spacious, clean and well equipped."

"We have a good impression of St. Regis properties overall, so we tend to stay here if it's available at the location we're travelling to. This time is no exception. We stayed at the Arno River view King room on the same level as breakfast. The room was clean and comfortable, full of history, with a heavy theme and a lot of artwork. The bathroom was mostly lined with marble and stocked with Sachajuan products, very standardised throughout all St. Regis properties. The room offered a beautiful panoramic view of the Arno River, and we had an amazing sunset view. The balcony was spacious and offered us space to walk back and forth. We were offered complimentary wine and cheese plates upon arrival, and we enjoyed the typical St. Regis service, like tea service and complimentary clothing pressing. Our room key was an old school heavy key with a huge tassel, not your modern day key card, and each time we leave, we would drop it off at the concierge and retrieve it when we returned. We found the experience interesting, and we enjoyed doing it for the few days we stayed there. The overall service was standard St. Regis, from the hotel porter to check-in, to the concierge, restaurant staff, and spa staff. Breakfast was very nice, a great buffet spread with an egg station. It is located on the first floor, where some seats offer a brilliant view of the Winter Garden bar and restaurant just one level down. The staff in general were courteous and professional, especially under the leadership of a presumably restaurant manager on duty from Tuesday to Friday. The gym was relatively small, and the air ventilation wasn't great. The spa was standard and nice. The overall aesthetics represented the cradle of the Renaissance well, with the art and decor, and the intricacy of the pattern in their elevators. Two things that fell short for us during our stay: 1) One of the iconic St. Regis experiences is their sabering ritual. For Florence, it was from 6-7 PM, no set time. We arrived at 6, and one of the staff members mentioned that they may start at 6:30 PM, so hopefully more people will show up. We left at 6:38 PM to continue on with our plans and by that point, still no sabering. We did get our 2 glasses of bubbles and snacks; however, it was simply served like we were at a normal bar, without the actual ritual. The interesting thing was that the bar staff actually opened a brand new bottle. We left confused as to what they were waiting on, why they would open a new bottle, rather than sabering it as part of the ritual, then serving the bubbles. 2) We received a bottle of sweet wine and a local biscuit inside a packaging that is shaped like the Duomo, which was really cute, and we took them home. When we opened the packaging and read the label, we discovered that the "use by" date for the biscuits was almost 3 months ago, before it was gifted to us during our stay. We appreciated the gesture, but it was quite a shock. We had a nice stay overall, but we might consider other properties if we ever visit Florence again."

"Great overnight stay in Florence. The St Regis is very luxurious and staffed with great service. You are a little far from the center of Florence about a 10 minute walk, but it’s worth it for the river views you get! Our room allowed us to open up French doors out onto a balcony overlooking the river. Was a once in a lifetime experience. Would recommend to anyone to try this spot out! Oh and be sure to go to breakfast if that’s an option, it was included through our American Express booking, the options were plentiful and tasted fabulous!"
