PB hotel design editorial

Built in 1865 for Baron Oppenheim and later home to Empress Eugénie of France — wife of Napoleon III — the neoclassical villa that became Villa Cora carries a weight of European aristocratic history that few Florentine hotels can claim. Designed by Giuseppe Poggi, the architect responsible for Florence's nineteenth-century urban expansion including the Viale dei Colli and Piazzale Michelangelo, the white-stuccoed palazzo sits above the Giardino del Bobolino with a symmetrical formality — double external staircases, engaged pilasters across the piano nobile, baroque stone urns flanking the forecourt fountain — that announced serious civic ambition even by the standards of the newly unified Italy. Inside, the 46 rooms preserve an atmosphere closer to private palazzo than hotel. The suite interiors visible in the images show original frescoed ceilings of the highest order: one with a painted oculus and Pompeian-register motifs in terracotta and sage, another with dense gilded stucco arabesque work running to the cornices above crimson velvet four-poster beds and herringbone parquet floors. The Moresque Room — a Moorish-inflected salon with lavender lacquered walls, intricate painted ornament, and fuchsia velvet banquette seating beneath a Murano glass chandelier — survives as one of the most extraordinary nineteenth-century interiors in the city. The pool terrace, framed by stone balustrades and a pink-rendered limonaia, holds the property's more relaxed register without disturbing the villa's fundamental character.

Step back into 19th-century opulence, in a converted noble estate, set inside a centuries-old park overlooking the Boboli gardens, just minutes from the city center. At home in its elegant rooms and suites and magnificent common areas, you will feel like a true Florentine aristocrat. Each floor of the Villa reflects a particular style, from Empress Eugénie and her passion for roses, to an oriental style, to the America of the 1950s. Created in harmony with the seasons, memorable gourmet meals are served at Le Bistrot Restaurant. The Bellevue roof terrace is the perfect spot for enjoying impressive views and mesmerizing sunsets, while the heated pool is open all year round for relaxation. The Benè Spa boasts a tepidarium, sauna, hammam and gym. A complimentary shuttle ensures guests can easily reach key points in the city.

Villa Cora Reviews

"We had a wonderful four-night stay at Villa Cora. The uniqueness of the property, combined with the warmth and attentiveness of the staff—especially the concierge and housekeeping teams—made this an exceptional luxury experience. After mornings spent exploring Florence, the pool was the perfect place to unwind before heading out to dinner, particularly on warmer days. The concierge team, in particular, was best-in-class. They were incredibly helpful in planning our time in Florence and seamlessly secured restaurant reservations both ahead of our arrival and during our stay. If you appreciate five-star hotels with character and a strong sense of place, this is an ideal choice. A couple of things to be aware of: while the rooms and property have been thoughtfully updated, they still retain an older feel—very much part of the charm, but different from the more modern polish you might find at a Four Seasons Hotel or Park Hyatt. Additionally, the shuttle service can be inconsistent. When it’s running smoothly, it’s excellent, but there are occasional limitations (restricted hours or multiple trips required if several groups are waiting). I’d recommend downloading a Florence taxi app as a backup. In our case, we weren’t always able to walk into the city as planned, so we relied more on transportation. That said, the staff was always proactive in helping us find alternatives when needed. Under normal circumstances, the walk into Florence would be a highlight in itself."

"Over the course of the last two months I have been fortunate enough to stay for several days each in one of the best hotels in Monaco, a very highly rated upscale chain hotel in the center of Madrid, and Villa Cora. All three stays were exceptional, but the Villa Cora stood out to me as the best of three great properties. The Villa and its grounds are immaculately maintained. Everything is spotless. The restaurant menu is not expansive, but everything on it is done in superb fashion. But the thing that makes Villa Cora stand out, even among extraordinary five-star hotels is the staff. From the moment you arrive to your final departure and at every turn in between, the staff is friendly, helpful, kind, and yet not obtrusive. My goal is my stay was to relax. And I could not have asked for more. I found the hotel by accident through a travel portal and it was most fortuitous that I did. There is zero doubt where I will stay the next time I'm in Florence. You should do the same! You won't regret it."

"My stay at Villa Cora was nothing short of amazing. The staff all called me by my name and I thought that was special ,they were friendly, attentive, and very professional, which made the experience even more special. The rooms were squeaky clean, beautifully presented, and so comfortable. Everything felt elegant, peaceful, and well taken care of. I truly enjoyed my stay and would gladly visit again… The only small downside was that there was no iron in the room, which would have been helpful,I requested for one and was asked to either use the laundry service or see if the housekeepers can help out . No iron in hotel rooms is the policy as I had that in another hotel . I didn’t pursue ironing my clothes further . No coffee or tea machine in room but as soon as you request for one while in the mirror room ,you will get one straightaway . Overall, an excellent experience and definitely going back for longer days ."

"An exceptional stay in every sense. The room was elegant, spacious, and incredibly comfortable, with a truly outstanding bed. The service was impeccable. Discreet, attentive, and deeply personalized, with thoughtful compliments that made the experience feel genuinely special. The food was refined and excellent, and the complimentary shuttle to the city added another level of convenience. Every detail reflected true luxury hospitality. Without question, one of the finest hotel experiences we’ve had. I recommend it!!!"
