PB hotel design editorial

A sixteenth-century Medici villa set directly on the Arno riverbank at Candeli, eight kilometres southeast of Florence, gives Villa la Massa one of the most particular situations of any hotel in Tuscany — the river bending around the estate's formal gardens on three sides, cypress allées and clipped hedgerows anchoring the grounds to the Florentine hills behind. The main building, a three-storey ochre-rendered palazzo with terracotta-tiled rooflines, is extended by converted farmhouse dependencies whose warm sienna render is visible around the pool complex, the ensemble spreading across the flat riverside plain with the unhurried logic of a working agricultural estate. Inside, the interiors favour a domesticated Florentine register rather than grand-hotel formality. Bedroom ceilings are left as exposed painted timber beams, floors run to terracotta herringbone tiles, and the palette across the 37 rooms moves between dusty periwinkle blue and warm cream — headboards upholstered with hand-painted cartouche motifs in red and turquoise, curtains in shot silk, dhurrie-influenced geometric rugs warming the stone underfoot. The riverside terrace dining room, shaded by canvas awnings on wrought-iron frames, sets terracotta-glazed ceramic planters and cobalt glass tabletops against the Arno view, the ironwork lanterns overhead carrying the same craft vocabulary found throughout the property. The effect is closer to an inhabited Florentine family house than a hotel, which has always been the point.

About

The 14th-century medicean Villa La Massa is set on the banks of the Arno River in the Tuscan countryside and linked to Florence’s city centre by the complimentary hotel shuttle. The hotel features 51 rooms, divided between five historic buildings: the Villa Nobile, the Mill, the Villino, the Casa Colonica and the Limonaia. The spirit of the Renaissance is still palpable in the first two villas decorated with sublime canopied beds, frescoes and tapestries, silks and brocades, while the other three are beautifully furnished in a more contemporary Florentine style. One of the villas, the Casa Colonica, an ancient farmhouse featuring 4 suites and a kitchen, has been rehabilitated in 2018 and can be rented out on an exclusive basis. The restaurant Il Verrocchio serves traditional Tuscan cuisine while the new L'Oliveto Bistro serves light fair by the brand new outdoor heated pool during the day. The Arno SPA is set in a welcoming Tuscan atmosphere and features products by Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella.

"My wife and I have stayed at many 5 star hotels across Europe but Villa La Massa is by far the best we have experienced in Italy. If you are looking for a quiet and luxurious stay with the best food and service then this is definitely the place to go. Everything about this hotel was exceptional. We highly recommend."

"We hadn’t been to Villa La Massa since 2018. Tamara welcomed us with open arms as if we were just there last month. We were treated like royalty! The staff’s attention to detail is second to none. The food was fantastic. The new pool that we had not yet seen was absolutely spectacular. We can’t wait to go back."

"Our first time in Florence and our honeymoon trip. This hotel was a last minute reservation and the hotel reception/reservation team just simply went above and beyond to help us get settled in for our three nights. On our arrival we were warmly greeted by the staff at the door who took our bags. The receptionist and the team at the front desk were superb - very kind, caring and helpful. We got a mini tour and they very kindly showed us some room options for us to pick from. We stayed in one of the new suites located on the grounds of the hotel - less than a minute walk to the main hotel. A very spacious room (with the option to interconnect with another) that had its own dressing room and a large bathroom with shower & bath. The suit was modern, in good condition and spotless. The hotel offers a free shuttle that brings you to & from Florence- a short drive away from the hotel which was fantastic. Unfortunately we didn't get to experience evening dining as we had already our dinning plans booked in advance and wished to use the evening time to explore Florence. There was a piano player on in the evenings, I assume aimed at those dining in the evenings. The food served at lunch & breakfast was delicious. We had food for lunch each day in the restaurant located by the pool. A decent menu was available and overall you couldn't fault anything here. Each morning we sat outside for breakfast which has an absolutely stunning view. Its part buffet with options to order from a menu. Service at breakfast was a little on the slow side for getting food / drinks ordered to your table though. It did appear that perhaps certain guests during our stay were given that bit of extra attention which was interesting being the couple not considered that much of a VIP!! The pool was lovely with plenty of sun loungers and umbrellas to seek shade from - perhaps as the day went on for people arriving late the availability was limited. The staff were on hand if you wanted to order snacks or drinks to your loungers and there was always a supply of water, compliments of the hotel, at any time brought to you on request. The gentleman aiding guests at the pool were very pleasant and on hand for anything you needed. The grounds of the hotel and the hotel itself I felt were very well kept. Room service was spot on each day with a turndown service in the evenings - something that's become less popular with hotels in recent years. There is a quiet bar on site - seating available inside or outside with a view also! Overall - a beautiful hotel just outside of Florence, very well maintained grounds and the staff were excellent throughout. You can communicate with them during your stay using WhatsApp which was useful also. A hotel we very much would come back to in the future!"
