PB hotel design editorial

Tucked into the car-free lanes of Santa Margherita Ligure, just minutes from Portofino's famous harbor by water taxi or the hotel's own electric buggy, Eight Hotel Portofino makes a persuasive case that intimacy is its own form of luxury. The property is set within a pale stucco building typical of the Ligurian riviera townscape — shuttered windows, molded cornices, the cobblestone mosaic entry threshold visible in the forecourt — converted into a small, design-forward hotel whose identity is built on carefully curated interiors rather than grand architectural gesture. Inside, two distinct moods coexist. The established rooms carry a restrained contemporary register: warm timber floors, panel-molded white joinery, cream upholstered armchairs grouped around low lacquered tables, and large-format black-and-white portrait photography mounted flush to greige-toned walls. The newer suite configurations shift the palette decisively toward Riviera warmth — powder blue paneling borrowed from the Ligurian sky, walnut and brass open-shelf room dividers creating a soft boundary between sleeping and living zones, and terracotta-upholstered daybeds that pick up the amber of the oak flooring below. The dining room strikes its own note: emerald velvet barrel chairs around slate-topped tables, striped silk curtains puddling onto cherry-wood floors, and a circular convex mirror anchoring the buffet wall in a move that feels more Milanese apartment than resort breakfast room. Access to a private beach club on the bay completes the picture.

"Hotel 8 in Portofino? An absolute nightmare. I booked a room for August 9th to 12th through Expedia-my mistake, meant September-but Expedia was a dream, trying to fix it. Amanda, the reservations manager, and Ermis, the resident manager, though? Total stonewall. They hit me with a no refund policy lecture and zero flexibility. After heated emails, they finally agreed to switch to my September 9th to 12th dates, but-get this-wanted another 3,700 euros on top of the 3,200 euros I'd already paid, claiming my original room was unavailable and I'd get a fancy one. I checked online, and the same room was still bookable for less! Called them out, and they just doubled down, refusing to budge. Now they won't even change my dates. TripAdvisor reviews echo this-others call Hotel 8 dinky, poorly located, and overpriced for Portofino. I'm visiting in September and will see it myself, but for now, steer clear of this place unless you love getting fleeced"

"My husband and I stayed at the Eight Hotel in early July 2025. The hotel was AMAZING. We were in a Deluxe Room, recently renovated with high quality finishings and designs like the White Lotus. The luxurious black marble bathroom had dual sinks, and a heated floor. The location is extraordinary, just 2 blocks from the port/pizetta. The shuttle service to the beach was very timely and comfortable. The beaches are a 4-5 minute drive, and all three main beaches (Dior, Dolce, and the Eight are all next to each other). Breakfast was good. The guests appeared to be mostly couples. The staff were nice, especially Ricardo. This is a boutique hotel with 8 floors. I think this is the best Hotel in Portofino, a true 5 star boutique hotel, if you do not want to spring for the Splendido. The Eight hotel is a one hour drive from the Genoa airport, given the roadways, and the taxi cost is around 175-225 Euros. There are no Ubers in Portofino, so taxis are the only possibilities. I would stay at the Eight again, either in Portofino or other Italian cities where the Eight has hotels."
