PB hotel design editorial

White stucco and sea-green shutters have marked this stretch of Santa Margherita Ligure's waterfront since the Grand Hotel Miramare opened in 1903, its five-storey Belle Époque facade — wrought-iron balustrades, ornamental plasterwork, colonnaded ground-floor loggia — positioned directly above the Ligurian shoreline with the calculated confidence of an era that understood the grand hotel as civic statement. Stone-pine canopies frame the upper floors in the images exactly as they have for more than a century, the building's white mass sitting against the hillside vegetation with an assurance that more recent coastal architecture rarely achieves. Inside, two registers coexist without much friction. The older rooms carry inlaid parquet floors in a geometric checker pattern, Murano glass chandeliers, wrought-iron bedheads with scrollwork detailing, and marble bathrooms with pedestal basins — the full inheritance of Ligurian grand-hotel tradition. Newer accommodation pulls the palette toward warm taupe, introduces plain oak flooring and cove-lit diamond-relief wallcovering, and reads as a calibrated rather than transformative update. The pool terrace is the property's clearest success: a large outdoor pool edged in timber decking and ringed with cream-canopied loungers, palm trees reflected in still water with the Gulf of Tigullio opening beyond. The poolside dining room — floor-to-ceiling glazing, iron café chairs in teal-and-cream stripe — keeps that view in frame from every table across the hotel's 82 rooms.

"Great experience. Hotel was outstanding"

A Tripadvisor traveler review

"The front line staff were excellent. Well trained, kind, and actually seemed to care about their guests. The staff service was excellent. The hotel was well presented as a want to be 5 star. In my opinion, not quite there. My problem remains with the Hotel Manager and ownership. Last year in August 2025, I had reserved and had every intention of staying at Grand Hotel Mirramare but unfortunately my 89 year old father’s health took a turn for the worse. I needed to cancel within the window for 100% no refund. When I reached out to the Hotel Manager, Salvatore Longo, to ask for a refund or even a future credit to the hotel, he held to his 100% no refund policy. Needless to say, I did not get and human concern or sympathy from him. My father passed away several weeks later. I decided for 2026 to spend 6 days in the end of May at the Grand Hotel Mirramare in a Luxury Suite (14k). Upon checking in, the Reception Staff did an excellent job from luggage to reception check in. Then the Hotel Manager, Salvatore Longo approached my wife and I. I could tell he knew who we were from his conversation. Never once did he discuss or ask about my father to see how he was doing. I thought about approaching him later during my stay to tell him my father passed away but his cold personality was apparent in his presence and what was the point. My stay at the Grand Hotel Mirramare was excellent. Entire staff was wonderful. So I have nothing negative to post in this regard. If you read the last 12 months of Trip Advisor reviews, there is a common thread. When the Hotel Manager, Salvatore Longo responds, there is no warmth or concern when it comes to humanity and it’s all about money; never refunds if within the 100% no refund window regardless of the guest reasons . The Family owners need to understand extenuating circumstances occur and I would think a death of a parent should be one. I suspect Salvatore Longo will respond to this post and if he stays true to form, the death of my father will be my fault and not deserving of any refund. In closing, I ask the family ownership to consider life events when enforcing policy decisions. I will return to Santa Margharita Grand Hotel Mirramare as the staff and hotel is worth coming back for."

"Superb hotel. Stylish and impeccable combination of classic and modern. Truly exceptional service by genuinely caring folks who are proud of their work and hotel. Views and location are idyllic. Lovely pool with private beach access across the street. Fabulous location. Suite with terrace was gorgeous. Great restaurant and bar. Highly recommended. Moreover — Santa Margherita is a much more fun place than tiny, limited and highly overrated Portofino. Stay three and go there for a few hours just so you get it out of your system."

"This is a wonderful hotel. The rooms are generously sized, the staff is polite, helpful and professional, and the food is excellent. The Concierges Stefano, Sara & Melanie are outstanding. Juliane and Andrea are great at the front desk. Luigi, Nicola, David and Alice made our breakfasts delightful."
