PB hotel design editorial
Since 1872, a white Belle Époque palace on the Ligurian waterfront has defined what a grand Italian Riviera hotel should look like — five symmetrical stories of ornate rendered facades, green-shuttered French doors opening onto iron balustrades, the whole composition rising from terraced gardens dense with Norfolk Island pines and Canary Island date palms. The Royal Hotel San Remo was built by the Lorenzi family and has remained in private hands ever since, a continuity that explains why the property carries itself with the unhurried confidence of an aristocratic residence rather than a managed asset. The interiors hold two distinct registers in productive tension. The original rooms favour herringbone parquet, marquetry writing desks, damask curtains in gold and sage, and Louis XVI-style medallion chairs — the full vocabulary of nineteenth-century grand hotel comfort, handled without apology. A later wing shifts to bleached louvered panels, striped linen armchairs, and a cooler palette of sand and pale blue that lets the Ligurian sunset do the decorative work. The dining room bridges both periods, its coffered ceiling carrying hand-painted botanical frescoes above gold-swagged drapery and white-clothed tables set with crystal. Outside, a seawater pool carved from the natural rock steps down through flagstone terraces to the private beach — one of the most convincing stretches of Italian resort infrastructure anywhere on this coast.

Royal Hotel San Remo Reviews
"I absolutely love this hotel. You feel like you are Claudia Cardinale or Loren staying here. Any minute an Italian count will send over a bottle of prosecco with a rose and an invitation to lunch poolside.....we had a junior suite bang in the middle on the top floor. It had 2 toilets and showers. Which was wonderful as at the last minute our 21 yr old daughter had to come with us. I love the resturant at the swimming grotto, I love all the hidden alcoves with semi private chairs. I love the red and white striped theme. I love the live music at cocktail hour and they do something extra special for guests which i am not going to say here but it was unforgettable and so generous and wonderful I shall always remember it. If this hotel was able to cater to our dietary needs, I may never go anywhere else each summer. We didn't ask them as we were doing a grand Italian Riveria tour and so moving towns and cities each 4 or 5 days..but I'd like to use ROYAL hotel SR as my base next time."

"What a wonderful hotel visit this has been - i travelled here last minute to stay for a week and had a lovely welcome by the team and my Seaview room was stunning!! This hotel is close to everything - the beach across the road and the main street for shopping is close by. My room was lovely and a wonderful little balcony! The breakfast buffet was equally lovely each morning and the hotel has a particular character of old and new combined. Most of the guests here had been returning for years and I could see why! The pool was my favourite and I found my spot daily which the pool attendants recognised and looked after me! I loved San Remo and will return next year!!"

"The Royal Hotel is one of the old classic grand hotels that are sprinkled along the waterfront in Sanremo – very large, white, Georgian style building from the mid-late 1800’s. It is still family owned, and it is perfectly, precisely well maintained and cared for – everything is pristinely clean, sparkling, and “just so.” This takes a lot of money, time, and attention to take such good care of a very large and very old building with so much traffic in both guests and event attendees. Location – fine with some drawbacks Positive -- It is right across the (very busy) street from the beaches, which are ok (C rated) compared to any / all of the French Riviera beaches and beach clubs The sea views from the sea facing rooms, especially balconies, are superb. The best walking path is not along the sea, but you can pick it up going east through the center of town between two lanes of incredibly busy loud traffic – if you can find it, then it is a lovely biking/ walking path that is shaded and quiet and safe for walkers. Negatives – The hotel is perched up high from the street, which is good from the standpoint of reduced street noise (which is extremely loud due to so many loud buzzy motor scooters) and from the opportunity for sea views from front facing rooms. However, this means that to get up to the hotel, you must go up several sets of uneven stone staircases and windy road sections between the staircases. The staircases are in full sun all day and are very hot. For anyone with mobility challenges, the staircases are very difficult and tiring. There is no elevator. The hotel is also about a 20 minute walk to town, which is very long if you are mobility challenged. The beaches and clubs are not the reason to come to Sanremo – if you want wonderful beaches and beach clubs and promenade walks along the sea, go to Nice or Cannes, not here. I was incredibly disappointed in the reality vs. what I saw on videos that people posted on youtube which implied (incorrectly) that there is a long walking path along the sea. There is a long bike path on which you can walk, but it veers inland very quickly going west shortly after the Royal Hotel with no water views at all; going east, you very quickly run into a parking lot and then the port with fishing boats. You have to find the specific section of the bike / walking path that is pretty and safe going east after you pass the port – and that is great. Hotel – Overall, this is a lovely hotel that appears to be a very popular venue for events as well. The décor is supremely lovely, with chandeliers everywhere, tapestries, and the most fragrant fresh cut flowers everywhere. You feel “Grace Kelly Gracious” here with a true sense of classic comfort, elegance, and style. Positives – clean, lovely, beautifully maintained. Gym – small on website photos but somewhat larger, better equipped, and very clean than a lot of hotel gyms. Breakfast – nice buffet; spread out. Melon is very good. Staff is very professional, very helpful, very polite, and very kind. Landscaping is very lovely Pool area – very nice to have as alternative to the beach clubs, which are not worth the money (go to Nice or Cannes for real and nice beach clubs). The towels and sunbed cushions are very comfortable and large. Negatives – Breakfast – it is not replenished after about 9 am. Breads look good but are all stale. Pigeons and seagulls and wasps aggressively attack you and your food the moment you sit outside, so the outside seating on the terrace with the lovely views is a nightmare times 100. Omelettes are ok. There is not much if you want healthy. Pool – there are no good sea views from the sunbeds; the street noise is loud, and the staff can be extremely snarky. Key -- only one key per room, and it is a mammoth heavy key. They request that you leave the key at the desk and ask for it every time you return, which is inconvenient and annoying. It would be so much easier to have individual card keys! Rooms – LOVELY and very very clean. Positives Individually controlled AC works very very well Lots of towels. Excellent shower water pressure; fully glass enclosed shower. Lots of storage space (large closet with multiple sections, real hangers, drawers, and hooks). Luggage racks with metal and straps Very comfortable bed with very nice linens Turndown service with water and chocolate Beautiful fresh fragrant flowers on table 2 mini fridges; we took their beverages out and used the space for our own Large floor to ceiling windows and French doors with balconies. Sea views are amazing. Lighted sign outside room door that indicates if the room is occupied / do not disturb / please clean that you activate with a button inside. No flimsy paper doorknob hangers that always fall on the floor. Electrical outlets and lights on both sides of the bed. Lovely soft bathrobes and cushy slippers Negatives Balcony – there is no shade on the balcony – no awning, no umbrella, nothing – so while the views from the balconies are better than being at the beach club or the pool, there is no shade and the full sun (even in autumn) is incredibly hot Key -- only one key per room, and it is a mammoth heavy key. They request that you leave the key at the desk and ask for it every time you return, which is inconvenient and annoying. It would be so much easier to have individual card keys Lights – too many light switches – it took a long time to figure out which switches activate which lights"
