PB hotel design editorial

Pressed against the harbour wall of one of the world's most scrutinised piazzas, where the ochre and terracotta facades of Portofino's fishing village have drawn painters, film stars, and the European aristocracy since the nineteenth century, Splendido Mare A Belmond Hotel claims the most coveted address in the village itself. While its sister property, the original Hotel Splendido, commands the hillside above from a converted monastery, Splendido Mare is embedded within the piazzetta — a position that makes every arriving motorboat and departing yacht part of the daily theatre. The restaurant terrace, canopied in yellow and white stripes and framed by clipped box hedges in terracotta pots, functions less as a dining room than as the finest ringside seat on the Ligurian coast. The interiors, refreshed under Belmond's ongoing investment in the property, carry a restrained mid-century Italian domesticity — herringbone and parquet timber floors, barrel-vaulted ceilings with delicate gilt-line detailing, upholstered rattan chairs, and walnut-framed headboards paired with rose and wheat-toned blankets. Murano glass wall sconces and a chandelier of the same provenance illuminate the dark-panelled cocktail bar, its mirrored back shelf and leather barstools giving it the clubbable gravity of a Milanese drinking room transplanted to the sea. Throughout, the palette holds to warm cream and sand, letting the harbour light — and the view — carry the chromatic weight.

"A hotel that truly makes you feel like the most important guest in the world From the moment you arrive, Splendido Mare in Portofino makes you feel like the most important guest in the world. The setting is simply beautiful, and the hotel itself is spectacular. Food and service are impeccable at every turn, and even the smallest details — the tableware, the cutlery — are refined and thoughtfully chosen. A benchmark for what genuine luxury hospitality should feel like."

"I couldn’t wait to leave this place. The location is beautiful, but I don’t stay at a luxury hotel just to admire the view, I stay there to rest and relax. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to do either. The staff clearly lack the training expected at a hotel of this level. Throughout my stay, I dealt with repeated misinformation and mistakes, and every issue was met with yet another, “We’re sorry.” Well, I’m sorry too that I chose to stay here. The property has narrow hallways, yet the staff seemed completely unaware of how much noise they were making. On two consecutive mornings, around 7:00 a.m., I had to leave my room and ask them to stop slamming the service doors because I couldn’t sleep. The most unacceptable part was that, while I was staying with my daughter, a male staff member entered our room twice without knocking. That is simply inexcusable. We were also offered a complimentary two-hour boat ride. After about an hour, while we were already in the middle of the sea, the boat driver informed us that we would have to pay if we wanted to continue for the second hour. Putting guests in that situation is completely unprofessional. These were just some of the many stressful situations we experienced, none of which are compatible with the standards of a luxury hotel. The bed was also one of the most uncomfortable I’ve ever slept on. It didn’t even have a pillow-top mattress, which is something I would expect from a hotel in this category. The room was overcrowded with unnecessary furniture, leaving very little space to store luggage or move around comfortably. Overall, I was extremely disappointed. It felt as though no one was truly managing or overseeing this hotel, and the lack of English proficiency among many staff members only made communication and resolving issues even more difficult. This was, without question, one of the most disappointing luxury hotel experiences I’ve ever had."
