PB hotel design editorial

Few Liberty-style palaces along Lake Como have held their original form as faithfully as the one that houses Grand Hotel Tremezzo. Built in 1910 on the western shore of the lake directly opposite the promontory of Bellagio, the five-storey ochre-and-cream facade — its wrought-iron balconies, arched loggias, and orange canvas awnings intact — carries the atmosphere of the Belle Époque with a conviction that renovation rarely preserves. The property runs to 98 rooms and suites, each positioned to face the water, and a major restoration completed in 2009 under the direction of the Sozzani family deepened the interiors without severing their historical roots. Inside, the rooms divide between two dominant registers: one leans toward Venetian Baroque, with carved gilded headboards, sage-green walls, and honey-gold silk drapes caught back from balcony doors; the other moves into a softer contemporary classicism, pairing lavender barrel chairs and a gilt-legged marble-topped coffee table against pale grey walls and full-length mirrors. The bar presents a third mood entirely — a parquet-floored drawing room in deep amber and oxblood, its mahogany counter backed by a painted overmantel, the surrounding chairs a deliberate mix of tulip-back and tub forms in clashing jewel tones that suggests less a hotel bar than a private Milanese collector's salon. The lakeside terrace restaurant, its wrought-iron columns strung with globe lamps, sets linen-covered tables against the Bellagio headland at dusk, the Murano glass tumblers catching the last mountain light.

Grand Hotel Tremezzo Reviews

"Valentina – I have read your responses to guests who have made negative comments and they are all very similar. We are currently in multiple suites in your hotel and have experienced poor service in many different areas. We are checking out tomorrow which is earlier than planned and I will update this review once we have left. I have discussed the issues with Management and their solution was unacceptable. With so many choices available to us Travelers it is unfortunate that this is the situation at this hotel."

"My wife and 4 year old daughter stayed for 4 nights and our favorite experience was at the outdoor pool in the garden. Especially the service, the staff made us feel right at home, specially Armedio. He greeted us everyday, brought our daughter chocolates every evening and made sure we were always comfortable and taken care of. He went above and beyond. Room service was also exceptional, in part because of Camille, she was great. She made sure we got breakfast promptly, gave us advice on what to visit/explore and again, made us feel comfortable and at home. This place is truly unique in its beauty and overall vibe!"

"The hotel itself is amazing. They have thought of every detail and our stay was very comfortable. The amenities at the hotel were also great. We visited the pool often and ate breakfast every morning which was nice. I gave it a 3/5 because of the service. We had dinner at L’Escale the first night. The food was okay (not great for the price point) and the service was absolutely terrible. Our waiter actively ignored our table and served guests around us, was rude on multiple occasions and then had the nerve to mention gratuity multiple times at the end. We also had an extremely rude waitstaff at T Bar. For the price point, you would expect better service but it was hit or miss throughout the resort. Some were friendly (front desk) and some were very rude. I wouldn’t recommend staying here and wouldn’t again."

"We have stayed at GHT several times, and each visit has been truly exceptional. From the incredible views and stunning property to the consistently outstanding service, every detail makes this hotel unforgettable. A very special thank you to Vincenzo at TBar and Carolina at the front desk who always male us feel so welcome and comfortable. They are truly exceptional. Additionally, very special thanks to Samu at L’Escale, and Gabriel and Cilbia at Terrazza for their warm hospitality and attentive service. They all helped make our stay even more memorable. If you’re looking for a luxurious and relaxing getaway, treat yourself to this little piece of paradise — you won’t be disappointed."

"It has been several months since my stay, yet the Grand Hotel Tremezzo warrants a thoughtful review. The property stands as the true grande dame of Lake Como, and its storied history is unmistakable. Although there are other hotels along the lake—many newly renovated and gleaming—they struggle to match the enduring cachet and character that the Tremezzo embodies. Much like the Lodge at Pebble Beach, it is an established hotel that continues to age with unparalleled grace, sophistication, and charm. Our room offered an exceptional view of the lake, framed by the mountains rising majestically behind it. While the décor was somewhat dated, it was tastefully appointed and well maintained. Waking to such a view each morning was an undeniable highlight of our stay. The dining experiences at the hotel were consistently enjoyable. The breakfast buffet, though modest in presentation, was abundant and of high quality. All the meals we had were prepared with care and were thoroughly satisfying. I must particularly commend the front desk and security staff. During our stay, I misplaced my mobile phone, and the staff went above and beyond to assist in locating it—which they successfully did. Their professionalism and dedication greatly enhanced our overall experience. My partner and I left with wonderful memories and look forward to returning when time allows. For travelers who do not require a newly built or ultra‑modern resort, and who instead appreciate a historic property offering exemplary service, the Grand Hotel Tremezzo is an ideal choice. Considering its age, heritage, and the level of service provided, our stay was truly worthy of a five‑star rating."
