PB hotel design editorial

Standing directly on the Menaggio waterfront where the western shore of Lake Como narrows toward the Swiss border, a five-storey neoclassical palazzo in pale ochre stucco has commanded this stretch of lakefront since 1869. The Grand Hotel Victoria underwent an extensive renovation completed in 2021, transforming what had become a dormant grand hotel into a 76-room property whose interiors navigate carefully between the building's Belle Époque bones and a contemporary Italian sensibility. The facade — columned loggias, wrought-iron balustrades, arched window surrounds — was preserved intact, while behind it the rooms were stripped back and rebuilt with oak plank flooring, upholstered headboards in deep saffron velvet, and geometric Art Deco-inflected wallcoverings in charcoal and gold that give the lake-facing rooms a warmth the old building had long lost. The outdoor terraces show the renovation's most confident move: a large pool deck fitted with teak decking and steel-framed pergolas sits against the palazzo's garden elevation, its clean contemporary geometry in deliberate contrast to the nineteenth-century cornicing above. The lakeside restaurant extends under a glazed canopy edged with dark steel columns, marble-topped tables paired with brass-legged chairs in teal and stone — a palette that echoes the water visible just beyond the garden wall. French doors throughout the bedrooms open directly onto iron balconies framing uninterrupted views across to the Tremezzina shore, the lake's particular quality of alpine light doing much of the interior design's work.

"Absolutely 10/10 stay. It was our first time in Lake Como and I didn't know much about Menaggio in general, but it was a great place to stay. Not too crowded/touristy, but had just enough restaurants/walking around for a 3-night stay (though would've gladly stayed longer). The hotel itself is stunning and felt like THE place to be in the area. It was spotless and service was top-notch; I don't think I walked in or out of the front doors a single time without being greeted by numerous smiling faces. Planning ahead for the trip, I had reached out and been in touch with the concierge and they were very responsive and provided plenty of info. They helped arrange our airport transfer (private car) to get the hotel and that went really smoothly (important after getting off a red-eye from the U.S.), and provided great restaurant recs. The design throughout was a really great mix of old school/classic elegance with modern touches and newer technology, so I feel like it could appeal to both older and younger travelers. I booked the most basic/cheapest room (park view) on points through Hilton/SLH and hoped for an upgrade because I'd noted we were celebrating a special occasion, but unfortunately no upgrade was provided--that's OK though, we really didn't spend much time in the room itself, I just had wanted a view of the lake (obviously) and instead had a view of the pool side/mountains (not bad). The room was on the smaller side for sure; with all of our luggage open it was quite tight, but it worked for the 2 of us (definitely would've been extra tight had we brought our baby and needed a crib--which was originally the plan but not what we ended up doing). The bathroom was a decent size and really lovely too. High tech room with the lighting and key functionality (kind of difficult to figure out but we managed). Provided a nice welcome amenity which we appreciated, and it was a very generously sized chocolate cake. Comfy bed and pillows and nice robes. Let's chat food for a moment--I'd heard good things about the complimentary breakfast and it did not disappoint. It was a very impressive buffet with probably 15+ breakfast pastry choices, in addition to eggs, fruits, yogurt, meat/cheeses, drinks--you name it. They also made eggs to order, as well as coffee beverages. Really a fabulous breakfast. Also had dinner at the hotel restaurant one night and, while it was not cheap (I think our mocktail was like 18 euro), the pizza and pasta was very delicious. And the views are great of course, with the restaurant facing the front/lake views. The spa was also incredible--again, I'd heard good things, and it really lived up to the hype. It's amazing how they developed such a complex network of rooms and pools and tubs underground beneath the hotel! You'd have no idea just walking by at ground level. In addition to just using the water facilities, we also scheduled a couples massage and it was one of the best massages I've ever had--I wish it had been 90 minutes! The gym was also great; well-stocked with plenty of equipment, and located by the pool with lots of windows so it was nice to be able to see outside. Other random observations: loved the gift shop (lots of great goodies/souvenirs), and so nice that the hotel has its own boat dock. Also, Victoria Beach is only about 5 minutes away and it was a really nice way to enjoy the lovely warm beachy weather and look out on the lake for a few hours. Unfortunately there was an entry fee (it really would've been nice if they'd comped that, especially considering it was early in the easy and totally empty) so I didn't love paying that, but it was a nice way to spend the day. Overall, really fantastic stay, I wouldn't hesitate to return!"

"We stayed at this hotel earlier this month. To start with the positive, the staff is first rate. They could not have been nicer or more helpful. The hotel is set on the lake and has lovely views from the front lawn and restaurant. Our room was another story. This hotel is over the top in using technology for everything. You have to use a keypad for every function. It took several tries to figure out the lights and curtains. The bathroom faucet was ridiculous. It was activated by a sensor and the water would not stay on. There was no hand soap by the sink. I guess you are supposed to use bath gel. A hotel of this caliber should have two sinks in the bathroom. Finally, the bathroom floors are marble. Talk about slippery. The room was absolutely utilitarian. Three hard chairs to sit on and one desk. We had a view of a gravel roof and construction crane. The bed was very comfortable though I assume there are nicer rooms which have better views and charm. The spa is beautiful but there are so many rooms that just seem gimmicky. A room with a moss wall for example. We could never get the jets for jacuzzis to stay on more than 5 minutes. We did not have any treatments, so I can't speak to the quality of those. Overall, I would much prefer a hotel with more charm and less technology."

"Attention to detail.First class spa.Staff were very attentive & always ready to assist.Hotel is fresh and modern excellent location and facilities. The breakfast buffet was outstanding so to the dinner/ restaurant. We cannot fault anything about this hotel. It sets a new standard that other Hotel/Spas should try to emulate. Nothing was left to chance from welcome drink to farewell drink. Greeting us at reception with a smile. The Spa is one of the best experiences available with saunas, steam rooms, Kneipp Path and hydrotherapy pools and showers, Himalayan salt cave and even a living moss room. This has now made us realize how much other locations including Lefay in Lake Garda need to pick up their attention to detail. Five stars is not enough!"
