PB hotel design editorial

Perched on the hillside above Bellagio's promontory — the precise point where Lake Como splits into its two southern arms — the Hotel Belvedere has been a family-run institution since 1880, its ochre and cream facade climbing through terraced gardens toward mountain ridgelines that frame the water on every side. The aerial view confirms what guests have always known: there is no better position in Bellagio, set back just enough from the lakefront to command the full panorama while a pool terrace and manicured lawns cascade down toward the village rooftops below. The interiors carry the accumulated character of more than a century of careful stewardship rather than any single designer's signature. Guest rooms in the original wing feature inlaid walnut writing desks, luggage benches in the northern Italian tradition, and floors of geometric polished marble in grey and cream — the kind of material confidence that belongs to an older, unhurried Italy. Rooms in the more recent wing move toward parquet floors and deep forest-green velvet armchairs with Art Deco proportions, hand-painted floral headboards adding a note of romantic whimsy. The dining room, dressed entirely in ivory — linen cloths, upholstered tub chairs, terrazzo floors — hangs a Gino Sarfatti-era brass chandelier above tables angled to hold the lake view between floor-to-ceiling windows, the mountains beyond dissolving into light at dusk.

"We have just returned from a fantastic stay at the Belvedere Hotel in Bellagio and couldn't have been happier with our experience. From the moment we arrived, every member of staff was welcoming, friendly and professional. Nothing was too much trouble. The hotel itself is immaculate, with beautiful gardens and breathtaking views over Lake Como. Our room was spacious, comfortable and spotlessly clean. Breakfast was excellent and we ate twice in the evenings which was one of the many highlights of the holiday. The location is ideal—just a short walk into the centre of Bellagio, making it easy to explore the shops and restaurants We would not hesitate to recommend the Belvedere Hotel to anyone visiting Lake Como and would love to return in the future. Thank you to everyone for making our holiday so memorable."

"Location and atmosphere is already spectacular at this beautiful property but what makes it truly special is its people. Attention to detail, personal greetings, getting to know you within hours and taking care of your every need. Spectacular stay. The restaurant is also something truly special."

"Do not stay at this hotel. They trick you & show you nice rooms online. When you get there, they put you in rooms where you might as well be staying in a hostel for college kids. The rooms had bugs everywhere, I woke up with them in my hair. There is no decor, nothing. It is white walls, 3 pieces of furniture, no rugs. It felt like I was staying in a warehouse. This is not a 4 star hotel. When you complain they act like they have every right to put you in any room they want."

"It was not the hotel’s fault that I booked our room through a well known booking website. I picked from the choice available and went with a “Garden view” room as the only Lake view room available 5 months prior to our stay had been the Lake view Suite. At the price I was paying ( approx €1300 per night ) I expected something a little better than a small green area opposite our room window almost completely screened by large trees, which allowed very little light into this gloomy space. But worse than this is the inconvenient truth that a road runs behind the back of the hotel. It would therefore be more accurate to advertise these rooms as having a “ Roadside view” which of course will never happen. The greatest gift a hotel can bestow its guests is a good nights sleep. Alas this was all but impossible due to a steady stream of revved up mopeds and motorbikes which sped by a few yards from these sleep deprived guests on and off all night. That said, other than the terrible room we had, the Belvedere is a wonderful hotel…..great staff, great food, personalised service and beautiful views. It can’t be faulted. In summary, staying in a back room at the Belvedere is like being on a plane cramped into economy knowing that fellow passengers were traveling first class but only paying €100 more for the privilege. This is the small difference between Lake view rooms at the hotel and the Roadside view alternatives. Chalk and cheese, heaven and hell. Buyer beware! ."
