PB hotel design editorial

Sitting directly on the lakefront at the southern reach of Lake Como, where the town gives way to the first gentle curve of the western shore, a nineteenth-century villa converted into Hotel Villa Flori has maintained the proportions and temperament of a private residence while serving as a hotel for well over a century. The cream stucco facade, with its wrought-iron balustrades, columned terraces, and clipped lakeside garden punctuated by tall palms and stone statuary, follows the Lombard neoclassical tradition of the grand lago villa — a building type that treats the water not as backdrop but as the primary room. Inside, the interiors walk a familiar tightrope between period grandeur and contemporary comfort without fully committing to either, which gives the rooms their particular character. Tall button-tufted headboards in dove grey, Louis XVI-style chairs upholstered in crimson damask, gilt wall sconces, and pale oak parquet floors set a tone that is emphatically traditional without feeling museological. The dining room, stretched along floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the lake, deploys a medallion-patterned carpet, white lacquered columns, and fuchsia dining chairs against cream panelling — a colour decision that lends the space a faintly operatic warmth. Outdoors, a gravel terrace furnished with wicker chairs extends along the waterfront beneath a retractable canopy, the mountain silhouette of the opposite shore framed between the cedar and palm canopy.

"Perfect location… ( BUT)…great suite views and balcony…Great food… lovely and helpful staff….excellent porterage…..A Deluxe suite it is NOT… 20 year old televisions x2 which are appalling …. Internet 🛜 is shockingly old fashioned….. chairs and couch that your granny would have thrown out years ago…and at an expensive price…. Without the view and balcony we would not have stayed…..and it’s expensive. Such a pity that the owners have not invested to get the detail right… such excellent potential."

"Our stay at Hotel Villa Flori was truly a paradise on Lake Como! From the moment we arrived, we were incredibly impressed. The hotel is absolutely beautiful—an authentic Italian gem with so much charm and elegance. Our room had the most magical view of the lake, surrounded by breathtaking mountains. Waking up to that scenery every morning was unforgettable. We enjoyed a delicious breakfast each day, and every member of the staff was warm, welcoming, and genuinely kind. We also loved relaxing with an Aperol Spritz at the bar overlooking the lake, and one evening we had the pleasure of dining at the hotel’s Michelin-star reimondi restaurant, which was an exceptional experience. What made our stay even more special was the outstanding hospitality. The hotel manager Mattia went above and beyond, recommending wonderful activities to help us experience the best of Lake Como. One day, we borrowed the complimentary hotel bikes, visited the local green market, and rode to a nearby town cernobbio where we enjoyed an amazing lunch at cafe lido. Our favorite experience was the private boat tour arranged by the manager. We explored the most beautiful spots around Lake Como, swam in the crystal-clear water, and the hotel thoughtfully provided towels, Aperol Spritz, water, and snacks. Our boat guide Eduardo was fantastic and made the day even more memorable. Mattia Thank you for the thoughtful bottle of champagne to celebrate my daughter’s graduation. It was a wonderful surprise, and we truly enjoyed it while taking in the amazing view from our balcony. Thank you, Hotel Villa Flori, for an unforgettable stay. We absolutely fell in love with your beautiful hotel and the incredible hospitality. We can’t wait to come back!"

"The real beauty of this hotel is the location - views over the lake particularly from the breakfast terrace are just sublime. The breakfast is excellent. Room was comfortable with great shades and a very comfortable bed. Bathroom small and not ideal - a tiny bath with shower over it and a wide edge to clamber over. The biggest sink I have ever seen meant it was cramped and bizarrely no shelf space for toiletries. Bar was nice with a terrace that also overlooked the lake. Nice drinks. Food here was not great though. I had a burger which was literally grilled burgers (I think frozen), slice of cheese and half a leaf of lettuce in a cold bun - no sauce, seasoning or flavour. Perhaps it is to encourage you into the restaurant but it deterred us and we then ate elsewhere. Other meals I saw served in the bar did look more appealing. My husband’s pasta was ok but very small. Service a bit slow and we had to wait ages for room cleaning and chase it. There is a car park (25 euros) which is shaded underground. Minibar in room quite expensive 9 euros for a tonic water! If you turn right out of the hotel and walk for 5 minutes there is a ferry to Como which is 3 euros return. I had read there was a ferry nearby and asked several times about it at the hotel but they just kept saying we will get you a taxi which is 15-20 euros each way. The boat was lovely and I have no idea why the hotel staff almost obstruct you in using it. Overall therefore it really is the location that drives this getting such high ratings."

"This hotel was elegant, convenient and had a staff that were more than accommodating. Our room had more size than many European rooms. The restaurant was excellent and had the prettiest lakefront view. Reservations are required. The second floor bar had an above average menu and could be used for lunch as well as dinner. It also had a wrap around view of the lake. The hotel has its own private boat dock which made everything so simple. They also have a Vespa and e-bikes to rent on site."
