PB hotel design editorial

Patricia Urquiola took on a genuinely difficult brief when she designed Il Sereno: how to insert a new-build contemporary hotel directly onto the waterfront at Torno, a village on the eastern arm of Lake Como, without either mimicking the nineteenth-century grandeur that defines the lake's hotel tradition or simply ignoring it. Her answer was a building clad in vertical cedar fins that soften and warm an otherwise clean-lined concrete and glass structure — five floors of deep-balconied rooms stepping toward the water, the teak deck of the infinity pool extending the building's horizontal plane directly over the lake. The 30 suites carry Urquiola's furniture vocabulary throughout: teal swivel lounge chairs, woven outdoor pieces from her Kettal collections, sculptural trestle desks in dark-stained timber, and headboard panels set in walnut frames that reference traditional Lombard joinery without reproducing it. Floor-to-ceiling glazing frames the green mountains of the Triangolo Lariano opposite, while sheer linen curtains filter the light into something close to underwater. The restaurant, Il Ristorante, is anchored in an older structure entirely — rough-hewn stone arches and dark masonry walls from what appears to be a historic lakeside outbuilding, now fitted with polished granite-topped tables and upholstered dining chairs, the kitchen visible through a slot window cut in the original stonework. The tension between those two registers, ancient local material and considered contemporary furniture, runs through the whole property.

About

Il Sereno presents a new era of luxury hotel for the iconic destination of Lake Como with an ethos of understated elegance. Designed by Patricia Urquiola, the all-suite hotel has 40 spacious rooms, ranging from 65 square meters to The Penthouse at 200+ square meters, all with floor to ceiling windows and all of them on the waterfront. Ristorante Al Lago is the hotel’s signature Michelin Star restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner and led by Chef Raffaele Lenzi. Guests can also relax at the hotel's full-service spa, situated under original arches dating back centuries. The property will feature a private beach, as well as a dock, allowing guests to arrive by one of the hotel's boats custom-built by Ernesto Riva. One of Il Sereno's show stopping features is the 60-foot-long freshwater infinity pool suspended over the water and the large sundeck.

"I hesitated to share this review in the selfish desire to try to keep this extraordinary destination to myself. But an experience so exceptional deserves rave recognition. There is only one level of service across all departments at Il Sereno - outstanding. My first glimpse of the property - before we even had keys to our room - had me smitten enough to extend our stay. And, we booked to return next summer before this trip was even halfway done. The product is stunning, the food is divine, the rooms were spacious and wonderfully appointed, and the amenities - pool, spa, gym - fantastic. But the 5 stars to Il Sereno (more if I could!) truly go to its people. The staff is young with a vibrant energy, but they are poised and experienced beyond their years. They are generous, anticipatory and so knowledgeable and passionate about this area of Italy. They care for this property as if it is a jewel box, and we, the guest, are treated as a precious gem. Il Sereno is for someone who likes a quiet getaway with lots of privacy, easy access to amenities, and the highest level of standard and service. However, hustle and bustle can be easily found in the towns nearby, and Il Sereno staff will send you to the best of the best restaurants, shops, gelaterias, etc. We can't wait to return."

"Il Sereno Como gets a lot of things right. The rooms are nice and spacious, if you ask for something they will arrange it and the food is of a high quality. The service at breakfast was the standout experience. Having said that there are areas for improvement. The driver arranged by the hotel to pick us up from Milan airport did not offer to help us with our bags which was unusual and there was mould in the bathroom and what I suspect is water proofing problems. The mould was cleaned up at my request but you would expect this to be checked by management. There are some other areas where the customer service could be more proactive."

"A beautiful, luxurious hotel with amazing and impeccable interiors, a gorgeous view and superb service. The service from Ruben, Andrea, Matteo and Abby was absolutely top notch. They made us feel so pampered and welcome - like family. We miss the hotel, the views of Como and the staff already. Highly recommended and most probably the best hotel in Como."
