PB hotel design editorial

Patricia Urquiola took on a genuinely difficult brief when she designed Il Sereno: how to insert a new-build contemporary hotel directly onto the waterfront at Torno, a village on the eastern arm of Lake Como, without either mimicking the nineteenth-century grandeur that defines the lake's hotel tradition or simply ignoring it. Her answer was a building clad in vertical cedar fins that soften and warm an otherwise clean-lined concrete and glass structure — five floors of deep-balconied rooms stepping toward the water, the teak deck of the infinity pool extending the building's horizontal plane directly over the lake. The 30 suites carry Urquiola's furniture vocabulary throughout: teal swivel lounge chairs, woven outdoor pieces from her Kettal collections, sculptural trestle desks in dark-stained timber, and headboard panels set in walnut frames that reference traditional Lombard joinery without reproducing it. Floor-to-ceiling glazing frames the green mountains of the Triangolo Lariano opposite, while sheer linen curtains filter the light into something close to underwater. The restaurant, Il Ristorante, is anchored in an older structure entirely — rough-hewn stone arches and dark masonry walls from what appears to be a historic lakeside outbuilding, now fitted with polished granite-topped tables and upholstered dining chairs, the kitchen visible through a slot window cut in the original stonework. The tension between those two registers, ancient local material and considered contemporary furniture, runs through the whole property.

About

Il Sereno presents a new era of luxury hotel for the iconic destination of Lake Como with an ethos of understated elegance. Designed by Patricia Urquiola, the all-suite hotel has 40 spacious rooms, ranging from 65 square meters to The Penthouse at 200+ square meters, all with floor to ceiling windows and all of them on the waterfront. Ristorante Al Lago is the hotel’s signature Michelin Star restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner and led by Chef Raffaele Lenzi. Guests can also relax at the hotel's full-service spa, situated under original arches dating back centuries. The property will feature a private beach, as well as a dock, allowing guests to arrive by one of the hotel's boats custom-built by Ernesto Riva. One of Il Sereno's show stopping features is the 60-foot-long freshwater infinity pool suspended over the water and the large sundeck.

"We just finished a 6 night stay in Alcove Suite to finish our 2 week Italy & Switzerland trip and boy it was great way to end it. The hotel is uniquely special and it starts when you pull up and make the walk to the lobby. The resort is impeccable in every way and what sets it apart are the great people. We can’t say enough good things about all of the people who helped us and some special shoutouts to Dennis in the pool area, Federica in the spa and Leonardo the bread man on the wait staff. The room was just as described and twice a day mad service was just perfect. We used the spa twice for massage services and were at the pool every day. We also did a 6 hour boat tour with Fabrizio and took out the personal sized boats for 2 hours ourselves. Breakfast every day at the restaurant or in our room was great and so many options. We did dinner 3 nights at Al Lago and it got better every night. There are some other choices where you can walk to Torno or get car service to Como or Blevio but it will cost you. Dinner option here at hotel or in your room will be better than going anywhere else. Overall we cannot recommend this place more on lake como as far enough away from busy towns of Bellagio or Varenna but I would choose to stay here every day. Menaggio was our favorite town as more laid back and less crowded. Thanks to everyone here at the hotel that made our vacation special."

"I truly enjoyed my stay at Il Sereno. The hotel is modern, beautifully designed, and its strongest asset is the stunning location with breathtaking views over Lake Como. All rooms have lake views and feature spacious balconies, which is a major highlight. The design is contemporary and elegant. The restaurant was a standout — both the food and the atmosphere were excellent. I especially appreciated the F&B team, who were highly professional and welcoming. Overall, the service across the hotel was of a high standard. Communication through WhatsApp with the hotel staff was smooth and helpful. I also enjoyed the well-organized boat tour of the lake. Everything from check-in to departure was handled efficiently and with care."

"I’m still dreaming about our stay at Il Sereno and wishing we could return every year. This hotel was a splurge for us, and I wasn’t sure if its minimalist style would feel truly luxurious. I was so wrong. Il Sereno’s understated design is paired with a level of comfort and beauty that feels effortlessly upscale. And the views? Absolutely priceless. The staff made our stay even more special. With such an intimate property, we were able to get to know them, and their thoughtful touches made our 10-year anniversary unforgettable. We had the privilege of experiencing both the Lario Suite and the Corner Suite—each spectacular in its own way. The Corner Suite offers sweeping views, but the Lario Suite wins for its massive closet (perfect for a longer stay!). Thank you, Il Sereno, for an incredible experience. ❤️ PS—Ignore that one negative blog review floating around out there. It couldn’t be further from our experience."
