PB hotel design editorial

Carved into the forested hillside above Cadenabbia on Lake Como's western shore, a late nineteenth-century neoclassical villa with rusticated stone arcades stretching directly into the water gave Mandarin Oriental Lake Como its defining architectural identity when the property opened in 2021. The villa's lakeside elevation — arched loggias at water level, terraced gardens climbing toward a tower visible above the treeline — is precisely the kind of Lombard aristocratic composition that has drawn northern European money and imagination to this lake for two centuries. Studio Jouin Manku, the Paris-based practice led by Patrick Jouin and Sanjit Manku, handled the interiors across the hotel's 76 rooms and suites, threading a contemporary residential sensibility through the historical envelope without dismantling it. Inside, the guest rooms show oak parquet in a warm honey tone, diamond-quilted leather headboards in tan, and arched French doors that frame the lake and mountains as if each balcony were a considered composition rather than an afterthought. The restaurant reads against terrazzo floors flecked in grey and green, oval dark-stone dining tables, and sage-green panelled walls beneath brass pendant lighting with a handcrafted reed quality — a palette that sits closer to a sophisticated Milanese apartment than a conventional hotel dining room. The lakeside pool deck, laid in iroko or teak planking and set flush against the historic stone balustrade, places the water of the pool in direct conversation with the lake itself, the geometry spare enough to let the Alpine backdrop do the necessary work.

"Wow what a let down , service so bad , attitude appalling. For sure they don’t understand the word Guest"

"Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como is undeniably stunning, but our stay was marred by how a simple check-in delay was handled. We arrived at the hotel at 10:30 AM, coming directly from Mandarin Oriental Milan, and despite the official 4:00 PM check-in, we were left waiting with no real attention or care from the staff. The room only became available at 3:30 PM — hardly something to be credited as going above and beyond after such a long wait. When I raised this with the hotel afterward, the reply I received was polite and beautifully worded, but ultimately hollow: it reaffirmed the check-in policy, thanked me for my patience, and offered nothing beyond an apology written by executive assistance to general manager . No real acknowledgment of the guest experience, no gesture, nothing. Having stayed at 9 Mandarin Oriental properties, I can say this one does not reflect the standard of care and attentiveness I’ve experienced elsewhere in the group. Some properties in this collection truly delight their guests; this one, unfortunately, make the oposite: “ a masterpiece of style over substance“! This experience, and the formulaic response that followed, has made me reconsider visiting other Mandarin Oriental properties in the future."

"My family & I recently stayed at the beautiful Mandarin Oriental Lago Di Como which was, undoubtedly, one of the best experiences we have ever enjoyed in our many decades of travelling and staying at many of the best luxury hotels globally. Words cannot describe how incredibly stunning this hotel located in such an idyllic location. It is set within its own exquisite estate far removed from the main road but yet conveniently accessible with its own private pier for boat access or by road in which the hotel offers complimentary shuttle services to the Como main square, train station and all major ferry services. All staff treated our family like royalty with every request met with enthusiasm, kindness, respect and patience. All dining options are exemplary although an absolute must Is dinner at L’ Aria which was phenomenal. It would be remiss of me not to mention Enrico, whom provided such exceptional concierge services and the team who assisted my husband in surprising me with the most divine gifts for my birthday."
