PB hotel design editorial

Carved into the forested hillside above Cadenabbia on Lake Como's western shore, a late nineteenth-century neoclassical villa with rusticated stone arcades stretching directly into the water gave Mandarin Oriental Lake Como its defining architectural identity when the property opened in 2021. The villa's lakeside elevation — arched loggias at water level, terraced gardens climbing toward a tower visible above the treeline — is precisely the kind of Lombard aristocratic composition that has drawn northern European money and imagination to this lake for two centuries. Studio Jouin Manku, the Paris-based practice led by Patrick Jouin and Sanjit Manku, handled the interiors across the hotel's 76 rooms and suites, threading a contemporary residential sensibility through the historical envelope without dismantling it. Inside, the guest rooms show oak parquet in a warm honey tone, diamond-quilted leather headboards in tan, and arched French doors that frame the lake and mountains as if each balcony were a considered composition rather than an afterthought. The restaurant reads against terrazzo floors flecked in grey and green, oval dark-stone dining tables, and sage-green panelled walls beneath brass pendant lighting with a handcrafted reed quality — a palette that sits closer to a sophisticated Milanese apartment than a conventional hotel dining room. The lakeside pool deck, laid in iroko or teak planking and set flush against the historic stone balustrade, places the water of the pool in direct conversation with the lake itself, the geometry spare enough to let the Alpine backdrop do the necessary work.

"_ location saves this place, sadly. _ bad experience _ not a great sleep, rooms smell old, humid, muggy, not clean. Pipe smell is a constant across buildings. _ bad service (cascade of service failures from concierte + guest services) _ boring and bland food _ good gym and great spa"

"We spent three magical nights at the stunning Mandarin Oriental. Once you arrive on the property it will be very difficult to pull yourself away to venture anywhere else. The floating pool is the most beautiful pool we've ever experienced. Feeling it sway up/down as the boats drove past was quite a surreal experience. The spa is the best we've ever been to. We loved everything about this hotel so much that we have decided to repeat the trip next summer. Why search for something else when you've found paradise right there. The only negative is that we would prefer a little more casual dining for dinner and did take the hotel shuttle to Como for dinner."

"Our experience at the Mandarin Oriental, Lago Di Como, was truly magical and unforgettable. This hotel became the most special setting of our lives, because it was here that my boyfriend proposed to me. Everything was organized with such care: he rented a boat in coordination with the hotel, and Domenico, who works at the Mandarin Oriental, took us on a private tour around the villas of the lake. Inside the boat, the hotel had prepared a beautiful amenities basket and gin & tonics—our favorite drink and the one we first connected over, making it especially meaningful. In front of one of the villas where James Bond and Star Wars were filmed, my boyfriend asked me to marry him. It was a moment I will never forget. When we returned to the hotel, we found a beautiful setting in our room, with flowers and thoughtful greetings. During the three days we stayed, everything was simply perfect. The view from our room was breathtaking, and every moment was filled with kindness and attention. The housekeeping was excellent, and the entire staff made us feel truly welcome—always attentive, professional, and warm. From the moment we arrived by car, everyone greeted us with a smile, and when we left, they bid us farewell the same way. On our last day, we enjoyed some pizzas by the lake, paired with champagne and gin & tonics. Honestly, it was one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had in my life. Everything was wonderful: the food, the service, the views, the atmosphere and the location is perfect. We had never stayed in such a beautiful hotel in Italy, and since it was my first time visiting the country, my expectations were very high… but they were exceeded in every possible way. I feel so happy and grateful for everything we experienced here. Without a doubt, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and a memory we will carry with us forever.

"Just returned from the Mandarin. Let’s start with the positives, this hotel is beautiful and has a prime position adjacent to Lake Como. We booked a Duplex Suite which had the most amazing views of the lake and is located within the main hotel building which gave us easy access to all facilities A very warm and efficient welcome upon arrival and the staff were all extremely helpful. We enjoyed boat trips on the lake each day and would recommend the self drive boats- good quality and 100 euros an hour The spa and boutique is excellent and the boutique offers great brands at reasonable prices. The treatments at the spa are very expensive but were great So to the not so good points. The hotel insists on playing through the whole hotel the most annoying music and it’s on a loop literally all day and night inside and outside and started at 7am until midnight and woke us up being above the reception Lake Como is one of the most beautiful, serene places in the world and I questioned why this is necessary with the management and why when you pay 3500 euros a night sleep is broken. The answer is as that apparently the employees all start at 7am! After the second day I have to say that the management agreed to address this and they did but shouldn’t it be obvious that guests certainly don’t want to hear this at 7am? I would add that the room we stayed in was very close to the taxi and golf cart turning area The dining at the hotel was a very mixed experience. We ate at the Aria which was fantastic food and great ambiance, high quality dining. The first night however we at at the bistro and I had the shrimp cocktail which was very bland and then I had a chicken dish recommended which was simply inedible and virtually all bone. I complained and the management discounted the bill but again not what you expect from a supposedly prestige hotel The breakfast is confusing. If you go to the Aria the food is beautiful and all included in your stay but if you order to your room, you are charged fully for all the food so we paid 115 euros for our first day. Why not just charge a surcharge? All this said we enjoyed the stay but I would say that this hotel is not of a standard to command the price of 3500 euros a night. The hotel positions itself as world class but unfortunately we found it to fall way short of that Thanks to the management though who did seem to take the feedback on board and did their best to respond in the right way, that was appreciated"
