PB hotel design editorial

Carved into the forested hillside above Cadenabbia on Lake Como's western shore, a late nineteenth-century neoclassical villa with rusticated stone arcades stretching directly into the water gave Mandarin Oriental Lake Como its defining architectural identity when the property opened in 2021. The villa's lakeside elevation — arched loggias at water level, terraced gardens climbing toward a tower visible above the treeline — is precisely the kind of Lombard aristocratic composition that has drawn northern European money and imagination to this lake for two centuries. Studio Jouin Manku, the Paris-based practice led by Patrick Jouin and Sanjit Manku, handled the interiors across the hotel's 76 rooms and suites, threading a contemporary residential sensibility through the historical envelope without dismantling it. Inside, the guest rooms show oak parquet in a warm honey tone, diamond-quilted leather headboards in tan, and arched French doors that frame the lake and mountains as if each balcony were a considered composition rather than an afterthought. The restaurant reads against terrazzo floors flecked in grey and green, oval dark-stone dining tables, and sage-green panelled walls beneath brass pendant lighting with a handcrafted reed quality — a palette that sits closer to a sophisticated Milanese apartment than a conventional hotel dining room. The lakeside pool deck, laid in iroko or teak planking and set flush against the historic stone balustrade, places the water of the pool in direct conversation with the lake itself, the geometry spare enough to let the Alpine backdrop do the necessary work.

"Very Nice property but just one original antique building, the other locations are newly built apartments. Next to it there’s an amazing Villa , if not wrong , Villa Taverna , with a stunning location, a Vavation Holiday apartment , Terrazza Torno, check it out ;-))"

"Review for Mandarin Oriental Lago di Como from Family Emir We spent several days at Mandarin Oriental Lago di Como and it is one of those rare properties where you immediately feel that everything is thought through properly. To start with, we were a bit unlucky with the weather, so we couldn’t fully enjoy the famous floating pool over the lake. Under normal conditions this must be one of the most impressive spots on Lake Como, especially towards sunset when the light drops behind the mountains. Even without using it, you can already see how special that setup is. What really stood out to us was the way the hotel handles situations. No hotel is perfect, especially at the beginning of the season, but here every small point was handled quickly, quietly and without any unnecessary discussion. That is exactly what separates a good hotel from a great one. We stayed in a suite with direct lake view. The room itself was very well designed, spacious, and extremely comfortable. Everything felt clean, well maintained and properly prepared. Housekeeping was consistent and discreet. Turndown service in the evening was done with attention to detail, creating a very relaxed atmosphere when returning to the room. The entire property feels secure and private at all times. Access is controlled in a subtle way, and there is always staff present without it feeling intrusive. You can move around the hotel, gardens and waterfront areas with a sense of calm and privacy, which is exactly what you want in a place like this. Service across the hotel was consistently strong. The staff is not only professional but genuinely friendly. It never feels forced. Whether at reception, concierge, or restaurant, the team is attentive and present without overdoing it. One situation that really impressed us was related to a boat tour we had planned. Due to weather conditions and personal reasons, we had to cancel. The hotel handled this immediately, with full understanding and no charge. This kind of flexibility is rare and shows real guest-oriented thinking. The food quality throughout the stay was very good. Breakfast was fresh and well presented, and the overall dining experience matched the level of the hotel. Service in the restaurant was smooth and attentive. From a location perspective, the hotel is perfectly positioned. You can reach Como within a short drive, and places like Bellagio or Villa del Balbianello are easily accessible by car or boat. At the same time, the hotel itself feels very quiet and separated from the busy parts of the lake. In the evening, the atmosphere becomes particularly special. The light over the lake, the calm surroundings, and the overall setup of the property create a very relaxed, almost private feeling. If we would mention very small details, then only as a side note: Some decorative lighting elements in the corridor towards the breakfast area feel slightly out of character compared to the otherwise very refined design. And at breakfast, the berries are excellent, but serving them with a spoon is a bit of a challenge. These are minor details in an otherwise very strong overall experience. We travel frequently and stay in many high-end hotels, and this property clearly belongs in that category. We will definitely come back."
