PB hotel design editorial

Built as a hunting lodge for the Austrian imperial family in the 1880s, the villa that would become Grand Hotel Fasano has spent well over a century accumulating the particular authority that only lakeside Lombard aristocracy tends to produce. The clock tower visible above the cypress canopy, the stone balustrades stepping down to the water, the terracotta rooflines half-consumed by mature palms and weeping willows — none of it was conceived for hospitality, which is precisely why it works so well as a hotel. The Pasini family acquired and converted the property, and their stewardship over successive decades has preserved its essential character: a private villa that receives guests rather than a hotel that pretends to villadom. Inside, the rooms navigate between two registers. The more traditionally appointed category leans into gilded headboards, draped canopies in ivory silk, tufted Chesterfield sofas, and wrought-iron coffee tables with frosted glass tops — the grammar of Italian grand hotel romance, executed with enough restraint to feel considered rather than theatrical. Lighter interventions in other rooms introduce pale upholstered headboards, powder-blue velvet benches, and botanical-print accent chairs that bring the palette closer to the lake itself. The lakeside terrace, furnished in teak with ice-blue cushioned seating arranged around mature palms, draws the two moods together — the historic fabric of the building held in easy conversation with the low shimmer of Garda stretching south toward Salò.

Grand Hotel Fasano Reviews

"Slightly tired communal areas and grounds. Main building better than annexing Villa Principe but that offers good value. Great dining options and very nice ambiance."

"The Grand Fasano is undoubtedly a beautiful hotel, but there are several important considerations to be made. Unfortunately, the value for money has become increasingly difficult to justify. Several years ago, a double room with a lake view during the same period cost around €300 per night. Today, for the same room category and time of year, the rate has risen to a staggering €450. What is particularly surprising is that the condition of the rooms has not changed in the slightest: the same amenities, the same furnishings. The increase therefore feels entirely unjustified. Service quality: The service in the lobby also falls short of what one would expect from a five-star establishment. Waiting times are long: it takes quite a while before someone comes to bring the menu, and just as long to place an order. Moreover, the lobby itself is not especially welcoming. Unfortunately, the real issue with the hotel lies in its owners / management (the Mayr family). There appears to be little genuine interest in guest feedback, not even from long-standing clients. Suggestions for improvement and complaints are effectively disregarded. They seem to follow their own agenda, and there is a noticeable lack of international experience in managing guest relations. This is a pity, as it ultimately risks eroding the trust of their clientele. As for the restaurant, Il Fagiano is good, but far from exceptional. Having dined at many Michelin-starred establishments, I can say it does not compare. The menus have not been updated in years, and the prices are decidedly high for what is offered. Finally, a word of caution for prospective guests: the view over Lake Garda is truly magnificent, but if you book a room without a lake view, be aware that the hotel is located on one of the noisiest roads in the area. It is important to know what to expect. In summary, this is a hotel that relies heavily on its location and views, but no longer delivers the value or level of guest care one would expect from a property of this category."
