PB hotel design editorial

Facing Milan's Piazza Duca d'Aosta since 1932, the creamy Liberty-style palazzo that houses the Excelsior Hotel Gallia is one of the city's great architectural survivors — its mansard roof, pedimented dormers, and figurative stone caryatids intact across nearly a century of Milanese change. The restoration completed in 2015 by Milanese practice Lissoni Associati, working alongside architect Marco Fantoni, addressed all 235 rooms and suites across nine floors while preserving the facade's elaborately carved limestone surface, visible in these images as a precisely articulated sequence of pilasters, balustrades, and carved keystones that makes most contemporary hotel architecture look impoverished by comparison. Inside, Lissoni's approach sets the historical envelope against a contemporary interior language with considerable assurance. Guest rooms pair wide-plank oak flooring and dark wenge wall panelling with elliptical backlit mirror headboards that carry an Art Deco reference without reproducing the period — the effect closer to a rigorous reinterpretation than a pastiche. The Gallia restaurant pushes further, its lacquered black ceiling, gold grid framework, oversized opalescent pendant lamps, and amber leather tub chairs constructing something between a 1930s ocean liner dining room and a contemporary Milanese design object. The spa takes a quieter register: polished grey marble surrounds the indoor pool, faced by an iridescent mosaic feature wall, hexagonal mirrored ceiling panels drawing natural light deep into the volume.

"Very good hotel and very unusual looking hallways and room doors. The room was very nice and roomy and beds were very comfortable. We had an early morning each day and we missed breakfast each day but the staff gave us to-go bags with coffee and juice in portions so large that we save half of the food for lunch. The Gallia bar staffed by Ivan and Cristina was exceptional and service was top class. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The staff helped us with getting us a ride to the airport early morning and everything was to perfection."

""Stayed for 2 nights in a circular suite. The location was excellent, a short distance from the central train station. The suite was expansive. The hotel staff and manager were incredibly welcoming. The rooftop bar has good views. The breakfast was very high quality catering to both meat and plant diners. We have rarely enjoyed a hotel stay so much. There was even a free hourly shuttle to the La Scala, Duomo and designer shopping area. While historic on the outside, the hotel is completely modern and sleek within."

"We had an absolutely fantastic stay at the Excelsior Gallia! Where do I start? The hotel is in an excellent location across the street from the centrale train station which not only made it very easy to get to and from our hotel but also was a central point for the metro and trams. From the moment we arrived we were so warmly greeted. We were escorted to our room and shown the principal common areas of the hotel by Gabriel. We had a suite which was quite large and accommodating. But it’s the service that really elevated our stay! I had previously had an accident 2 weeks earlier that required stitches. The concierge team including Edoardo and Luca coordinated a doctor visit to our room to have the stitches removed. This required a lot of coordination on their end and they absolutely pulled through and in such a pleasant and helpful way. They made us feel like royalty. They always remembered our names from our first conversation. The same was true of the front desk staff and the breakfast dining staff. For example, we were having breakfast and I wanted to be sure I was in the room when the doctor arrived. When I left the breakfast dining area the hostess called me by my name and told me the concierge would like to see me as the doctor has arrived. First of all, the hostess remembering my name and the concierge knowing I was having breakfast, now that’s service! The concierge team was also very helpful with restaurant and “things to do” recommendations. When we called for laundry pickup there were at our room in less than 5 minutes. Joy at the front desk was super helpful getting an ice pack up to our room for my wife. I have tried to emphasize how service is such an important aspect of the experience we had, certainly engrained by management. Highly recommend!"

"The Gallia is a beautiful hotel, but what was really wonderful was the service. Everyone we came in contact with, from the reception, to the servers in the restaurant, to the housekeepers, were friendly, professional and welcoming. This is not an inexpensive hotel, but the rooms are a good size and well furnished. The food quality is excellent. We had the breakfast buffet in our rate, which is the way to go. We also ate at the bar restaurant and the food was very good. The location is right across from the Centrale train station, making transportation via train to Malpensa very easy."

"Our stay was spectacular….and it started even before we left. A few days before I received a phone call from Antonella asking how she can make my stay special. I told her we were going to visit my daughter, who is studying in Milan and will be celebrating her 21st birthday, she said she would handle it….and she did…..Let’s start from the first day. We arrived to the hotel at around noon. Our room was ready, but I asked if there might be an upgrade and Edoardo (who was just the most amazing person) found us a “nice” upgrade but said it would not be ready for a couple of hours, but promised it would be worth the wait…..and it was! We stayed in Suite 521 and it was beautiful. Guest bathroom, dining area, living room, huge tub and separate shower, and very nice bedroom. The suite was very well appointed including plush robes and slippers, a mini fridge and a Nespresso machine with 6 pods plus lots of delicious water (no plastic). The room also had a beautiful balcony with a gorgeous view. The bed was as comfortable as a bed could be and the room was very quiet! A great nights sleep! In the morning we went to breakfast…..I don’t know that I can really call it breakfast, or a buffet, because that really is not accurate. First of all, the variety was very impressive! The amount (and quality) of food that was available was impressive. From pistachio cream filled croissants to every cured meat you can imagine to caviar to some kind of buffalo milk cream dessert (that was delicious)….and it did not end there. Perfectly round and cooked fried eggs, pork and chicken sausage, tofu (not usually a fan, but again, this was no ordinary tofu, it must have been some kind of magic). If you wanted more, no problem, order an omelette….it was made a little differently. Delicious, but it was completely sealed, almost like an egg burrito….very nice touch. The french toast was another winner, and of course, how can you go wrong with Nutella pancakes?? Thank God we walked a lot, otherwise, I would have gained a ton. With that said, I should also note that the cappuccino were out of this world. I had two every morning. :) Daniel was the most amazing server….more on the staff at the end. The hotel is across from the train station, which made it very easy to travel. Ubers and taxis were plentiful (take an Uber, taxi drivers were hit/miss with some not resetting their meters and trying to rip us off). The hotel also has free shuttle to the Duomo, which we used a lot. You have to reserve it, but we never had a problem. As much as we enjoyed all the amenities and lavishness, what was most impressive was the commitment to service, not only by the superstars (Edoardo, Antonella and Daniel), but by all the staff. They were all so engaging and friendly and knew us by name. THEY created an amazing atmosphere. I should also note that we had put a lot of euor’s in the safe the first day and forgot to lock it, and nothing was touched. Being from NY, we tend to be cautious and would prefer not to leave anything to temptation, but we never felt unsafe, nor did we feel that anyone of the staff would take advantage of us. Quite the opposite, I feel like they always looked out for us. It was so great, that we ended up canceling a reservation to what had been a higher rated hotel so that we could continue our stay here, and again, Edoardo saved the day and made it all happen and Antonella did her magic as well. I can’t imagine anyone not giving this property an EASY 5 star review. We travel all over and stay at all kinds of properties and I think this has been the best all around for a cosmopolitan stay. I can’t recommend the Excelsior Hotel Gallia enough."
