PB hotel design editorial

Few hospitality conversions in recent memory have asked as much of their building as Portrait Milano — or received as much in return. The former Archiepiscopal Seminary on Corso Venezia 11, a 17th-century institution whose double-colonnaded courtyard stretches nearly 2,800 square metres of pale stone, travertine-paved calm, and perfect Doric repetition, was always too grand to be merely useful. Architect Michele De Lucchi led the restoration from 2019, treating the loggia-wrapped piazza with the gravity it deserves while threading 73 rooms and suites into the seminary's upper reaches. The courtyard remains the emotional centre of the property — the kind of space that makes you lower your voice without knowing why. Inside, Michele Bönan channelled the spirit of 1950s Milanese residential life rather than the palazzo grandeur the building might have demanded. The rooms arrive in two distinct registers: some wrapped in deep vermillion velvet and warm timber panelling, others anchored in bottle-green with angled skylights and porthole windows that feel unexpectedly nautical against the seminary's gravitas. Bönan's bar — all faceted metalwork, burnished terrazzo, and backlit walnut shelving — has the easy authority of a private club. The restaurant, by contrast, unfolds beneath cross-vaulted ceilings washed in terracotta plaster, green banquettes pressed against dark wainscoting, and a gallery wall of drawings and lithographs that gives the room the feeling of a serious collector's dining room rather than a hotel amenity.

"We had a wonderful stay at Portrait Milano and wanted to thank the entire team for such a thoughtful and well-run experience. What stood out most was the attention to detail throughout the hotel. The room and housekeeping team somehow managed to surprise us every time we returned to the room, which made coming back after a day out in Milan always feel special. The same level of care could be felt across the hotel — from reception and concierge to the F&B team. A special thank you to Milica, who made sure our stay was smooth and seamless from the very beginning. Her warmth and attentiveness made a real difference and added a very personal touch to the experience. We would also like to thank Diego and Marie Rose at breakfast for the great service each morning. It was always such a lovely way to start the day. Overall, it was one of the most memorable hotel stays we’ve had. Portrait Milano is a very special place, and we very much look forward to returning in the future."

"This is an amazing hotel. The rooms are very nice and spacious, the staff is extremely welcoming, and the spa is incredible and included very advanced fitness offerings. The hotel’s restaurant has a great menu as well. The concierge service was also fantastic! Flaminia was very thoughtful and recommended the best activities for me to do during the day and also was able to recommend me a really good restaurant and got me a reservation there at the last minute too!"

"I don’t usually write long reviews, but Portrait Milano deserves one because of Allison and Flaminia. My stay during Fashion Week was complicated including spending one night at another hotel and these two were absolutely incredible. Allison basically made the entire stay work. She managed every detail, but what I appreciated most was how personal she was: checking in with me every morning, making sure I was okay, and staying engaged so nothing slipped through the cracks. She made a complicated situation feel effortless. Flaminia was always there no matter when I contacted her, she was responsive, kind, and on top of everything. She gave me a great tour of the facilities, checked in regularly, and her attention to detail was exceptional. These two ladies were phenomenal and made me feel truly taken care of. Huge thanks to both, they’re a big reason I’ll return to Portrait Milano."

"My husband and I were travelling to Italy for business. It was our first time staying at the Portrait Milano. Definitely worth the money! We were really impressed with everything - location, the building itself, the staff, the room, the restaurant 10_11 on the ground floor. The service of the hotel was way beyond our expectations. The rooms are large, exceptionally clean and neat, the furniture and bathroom is up to date. All the essential high quality toiletries are provided, hairdryer and hair straightener are Dyson, the mattress and pillows will definitely guarantee you a good deep sleep. Also, I would like to stress out about the decency of the staff and being very helpful to us. While packing and being in a hurry, I left my valuable items in the room. After realising that at the airport already, I have contacted the hotel team immediately. And they found my belongings inside the room we stayed in. The hotel team kindly offered me to keep my stuff until my friend collects them. My sincerest appreciation for keeping them safe for me. Also, sending our huge regards to Sophia who speaks fluent in English, Finnish, Estonian, Russian and Italian. She was super helpful to us with the check in procedure. We wish her good luck in her future endeavours. We are looking forward to staying at the Portrait Milano in the future. Thank you."
