PB hotel design editorial

Via della Spiga 8 is one of the most freighted addresses in Milanese fashion, and it takes a certain confidence to plant a hotel at that junction with Via Senato. The Carlton Milan, a Rocco Forte Hotel, earned that confidence through sixty years of history before its €60-million, five-year renovation returned it to service in November 2025, this time with 71 rooms spread across dual street frontages and a facade preserved exactly as it stood when the original building opened in 1963. Philip Vergeylen and Paolo Moschino led the interiors under the creative direction of Olga Polizzi, and their instinct throughout was to work with the building's mid-century Milanese bones rather than override them with contemporary gestures. The rooms demonstrate what that means in practice: grasscloth-lined walls panelled in pale sage or warm tobacco, upholstered headboards with nailhead-trimmed scroll detailing, navy velvet sofas paired with crimson lacquer chairs, antiqued mirror wardrobe panels doubling the light. Plaid wool throws and ikat cushions bring a domestic ease that keeps the Art Deco reference from stiffening into period costume. The winter garden courtyard, crowned by a glazed dome trailing living greenery, is the spatial set piece of the renovation — a room that feels both conservatory and piazza, its arched steel-framed niches lined with lanterns and tropical foliage. Outside, a trellised garden terrace furnished with black-and-white striped iron chairs makes the most of a quartiere where eating and drinking outside is practically a civic obligation.

The Carlton, a Rocco Forte Hotel Reviews

"Our stay at The Carlton truly exceeded our expectations for a luxury hotel experience. The property is in a fantastic location, and the rooms are spacious, beautifully appointed, and equipped with the amenities you’d expect from a top-tier hotel. What really sets this hotel apart is the exceptional staff. Before we even arrived, the concierges assisted us with restaurant reservations, tickets, and other arrangements. After a long overnight flight, the porters greeted us warmly and politely, and an early check-in (requested due to our flight) was graciously accommodated. Breakfast service was particularly memorable due to the team’s attentiveness to my son’s tree nut allergy. On our first morning, he requested pancakes, but they contained hazelnuts. While they couldn’t accommodate him that day, the staff promised nut-free pancakes for the next breakfast, and they delivered: he loved them! (Note: we stayed at another Rocco Forte Hotel in Italy and they did not offer to accommodate my son.) This kind of thoughtful service is what makes a stay truly special. Housekeeping also did a remarkable job keeping our son’s room in order, which is no small feat. We did notice a $95/day discretionary fee on our bill, which was explained as a “tipping” fee. Though we had already tipped staff directly, we chose not to dispute it, as the service throughout the hotel was exemplary. One small observation: the staff is notably diverse, reflecting the hotel’s international clientele. This stood out more after staying at other hotels during our Italian trip. All in all, The Carlton is a luxurious, well-staffed, and elegantly located hotel in Milan. The thoughtful service and attention to detail have already convinced us to return on our next visit."

"This hotel is as fine as one could hope to experience. It is exquisitely furnished, the bedrooms are beautiful and appointed with the finest amenities, and the staff is exceptional. I would like to make special note of Gaia G., Omar, and Antonia at the front desk. The entire staff , the concierges and housekeeping, are simply of the highest class. Breakfast was delicious and very varied. The location of the hotel is special. Bravo to this extraordinary Rocco Forte property. You are the best and we had a ,marvelous time. Thank you for all your kindness!"

"The hotel is a true gem in the perfect location in Milan. The staff was world-class professional, and I found the concierge to be very attentive and helpful throughout my visit. My room was beautifully appointed, and the welcoming peaches were a lovely touch. I also much appreciated having my preferred newspaper, the Financial Times, available each day. My business dinner at Spiga was incredible; the ossobuco ravioli and the pan-fried sole were spectacular highlights. I especially want to acknowledge the exceptional service provided by Giacomo, which made the evening truly memorable. I also enjoyed cocktails in The Carlton Bar and found the Riflettori to be one of the most interesting, glamorous, and sophisticated drinks I have had anywhere in the world. The Irene Forte Spa was a standout experience as well. The Peptide Power Facial was the most decadent 90 minutes I have spent in a long time. I particularly appreciated the Irene Forte Spa products provided during the turndown service, and I have returned home with a suitcase full of products that I cannot stop talking about."
