PB hotel design editorial

Across the street from Milan's Piazza del Duomo, where the cathedral's Gothic spires define one of Europe's most charged urban addresses, a postwar rationalist tower carries one of the city's more unexpected façade treatments: a large-scale geometric mural in terracotta, teal, and ochre wrapping its lower floors in a graphic abstraction that announces The Square Milano Duomo from a full block away. The nine-storey building, positioned at the corner of Via Silvio Pellico, delivers 119 rooms across an interior palette built around dark-stained macassar-effect cabinetry, pale oak flooring, and oversized padded headboards in horizontal-banded greige upholstery — a considered mid-market Italian modernism that keeps the rooms calm without stripping them of character. The ground-floor restaurant extends across tall curtain-glazed walls, its cream leather dining chairs and dark timber tables arranged in a layout that borrows its spatial generosity from the commercial interiors of the rationalist era — banking halls translated into hospitality. The rooftop terrace is the property's most persuasive argument: a retractable canvas awning shelters a long banquette-and-bistro-chair dining deck from which the green copper dome of San Alessandro and the new CityLife towers frame opposite ends of the Milan skyline in a single glance, making the elevation work harder than almost any other asset in the building.

"I chose your hotel specifically to celebrate my birthday and paid €1700 for four nights, expecting a safe, clean, and comfortable 4-star experience. Unfortunately, my stay was marked by a series of serious failures: • The first room had a broken door lock, forcing me to sleep without proper security. • The second room had defective canalisation, with water coming up from the shower floor when using the sink or toilet. • There was a persistent and unpleasant sewage smell in the room. • After maintenance, the room was not properly cleaned. • Visible mould was present around the windows. • Cleaning standards were unacceptable, as demonstrated by the attached photos of towels used to clean the room. These issues represent significant hygiene, safety, and service failures and are not acceptable for a hotel of category. This experience caused considerable stress and disappointment during what was meant to be a special occasion. Never again in this hotel. Don’t trust pictures on websites—they can be misleading. Don’t repeat my experience: never tolerate a bad smell in a hotel room, as it could be mold, like in mine. Please stay safe and choose carefully."

"First, when you make a reservation at this location, be aware that the same property is shared with the Hotel Del Cavalieri. Be sure to specify “Hotel The Square” to your taxi driver to be taken to the right entrance (which is on the other side of the block). This is a up-to-the-second modern hotel. The room was stylist with beautiful fittings, a strangely-located TV in the middle of the room, a comfortable bed, good pillows, and a bathroom with a bidet. Our room had a balcony with a nondescript forgettable view. Like a lot of hyper-modern rooms, this one had poor lighting overall. Fragrance-sensitive people beware: the bathroom amenities are highly-scented and may trigger a reaction if you are sensitive. There are no fragrance-free options. The hotel’s location is superb, just steps from the Duomo and in an upscale and safe area filled with stores and restaurants. Recommended."

"Questionable business practice As a senior executive for multiple companies, I do not write reviews. However, due this perceived egregious, unethical and questionable business practice by the Preferred Hotel & Resort group, I am compelled to write this review of The Square Milano and Preferred Hotels & Resorts. I have stayed at The Square Milano 3 times for both personal and business travel in the past 4 years. The hotel is conveniently located in the heart of Milan with easy access to other parts of the city and I rather enjoyed my stays and recommended it to family, friends and business associates. On this occasion, our corporate travel agent booked a flexible rate for 3 nights for September 2025 at a nightly rate of $825.00/night. I also personally booked the same nights and flexible rates without realizing that it was booked by the agent. When my partner checked in and realized that it was not the room that I booked the reservation was cancelled. My partner was not told that there was a double reservation at check in. I expected to receive a 1 night penalty as per the hotel’s policy. Instead, I was offered a 1 night stay with expiry December 31, 2025. When I protested as I had no plans to return to Milan, the offer was extended to December 31, 2026. I have been back and forth with the hotel manager who has steadfast refused to honor their own policy. I wanted this review to serve as a warming to other prospective guests that in my opinion this hotel and the Preferred Hotels and Resorts group have questionable business practice and unethical people. Beware – do not book this hotel. Their cancellation Policy: Flexible rate Payment terms The given credit card is only to guarantee this reservation. The Hotel reserves the right to proof that the card has sufficient funds and to cancel the reservation in case the card will be not covered. The payment of the stay will be requested at the check in. If the booker would like to prepay for this reservation, we invite you to contact us at reservation@deicavaliericollection.com for sending a payment link. Cancellation policy The reservation can be cancelled within 16.00 the day before the date of arrival. In case of cancellation after the deadline or no show, the cost of the first night will be charged as a penalty directly to the credit card provided as guarantee, without the need for further authorization from the customer."

"On my last evening at this centrally located hotel, the emergency light went on in my room, shining directly in my face and waking me up at 3 AM! I of course searched for an off switch which I found none. Call the reception desk and not get an answer. Finally went off 45 minutes later. This light went on again at 4:00 and stayed on till 5:00 a.m. I again called the reception desk and received no answer. After my shower I did call the reception desk, did get an answer and did speak to the reception desk manager. Lara. She naturally apologized and said she would look into it. When I checked out a few hours later, Lara again apologized and took my two drinks off my bill. She informed me that unfortunately she could not refund my room charge at that moment because it was arranged through a travel agent. The hotel now claims that there was no refund promised. So in the event that you do ask for a refund, make sure you video tape it because Lara the reception desk manager was not telling the TRUTH! RECEPTION DESK PHONES SHOULD ALWAYS BE ANSWERED!! SO DISAPPOINTED in this hotel...been to Milan four previous trips and this experience soured my opinion of this HOTEL CHAIN!!!!!"
