PB hotel design editorial

Monastero Bormida sits in the Langa Astigiana, a fold of Piedmont that most visitors bypass on their way to Barolo or Alba — which is precisely what gives Villa La Madonna its particular character. The property is built around a medieval stone farmhouse complex whose origins predate the hotel by several centuries, the rough-hewn local stone facade, round oculus windows with their distinctive terracotta brick surrounds, and steeply pitched timber-framed roof all surviving largely intact. Green-shuttered casement windows and wrought-iron balustrade railings pull the building into a northern Italian vernacular that sits somewhere between Lombard farmhouse and minor nobility's retreat. Inside, the interiors strike a balance between the building's rustic bones and a quietly considered contemporary comfort. Terracotta floor tiles — the herringbone and square-set variety visible throughout the rooms — anchor the palette, while the guest rooms layer sage-painted armoires with lace-panelled doors, tufted velvet headboards in deep teal, aged gilt mirrors, and linen drape in grey and warm white. The restaurant works hardest of all the spaces, its barrel-vaulted brick ceiling and rough stone walls providing an atmosphere that no amount of styling could manufacture; velvet wing chairs in forest green and dove grey pull up to white-clothed tables beneath a brass candelabra chandelier. The pool terrace, edged in stone and terracotta urns, opens directly onto the surrounding vineyard slopes — a reminder that here, the landscape has always been the point.

"My husband and I stayed at Villa La Madonna for 3 nights. Too short a stay! We had planned this visit years ago then COVID happened and had to cancel. Finally in June of 2026 we made it happened. It was love at first sight! From the moment we entered the property, we knew it was worth the wait. Villa La Madonna is truly magical in every way. Every inches of the property and Villa is well thought of and beautifully appointed. The grounds are impeccable and full of nature, the common area outside and inside offer tranquility and beauty with lots of space to lounge, read or just take it all in. The pool area is perfect with a bar and eating area. All staff without exception are professional, attentive and eager to attend to any requests. Our room, a Deluxe Suite, had everything we needed. Ample space to unpack, good quality toiletries, immaculate and quiet. . Again, well appointed and beautiful with lots of natural light. We chose the Vineyard Package which included a 4 course dinner with wine pairing each night I can't even begin to describe that experience, it would take too long. Each night was met with an amazing menu paired with the perfect wine. The food was delicious. Each evening felt special and magical. The staff always attentive. A big thank you to Luca who pampered us and made us feel so special. Grazie mille. The wine tasting in the 17th century cellar was also a great experience with Gregorio. I could go on and on. If you find yourself in Piedmont, you need to stay at Villa La Madonna. You will not want to leave the property to explore the beautiful area of Piedmont. When we left at the end of our stay, I felt like we were leaving an extended family. I got a little choked up. So for now, it;s arrivedercci until we meet again. Grazie mille for an unforgettable stay."
