PB hotel design editorial

At the southernmost tip of Puglia, where the Salentine peninsula tapers toward the Ionian and Adriatic seas, a nineteenth-century aristocratic palazzo in the village of Gagliano del Capo was transformed into Palazzo Daniele by the Roman studio Ludovica Serafini. The conversion resisted the instinct to polish — the barnacled limestone courtyard façades with their grand arched loggia were left exactly as centuries of sun and salt had made them, terracotta amphoras standing sentinel along the cobbled forecourt, the archway framing a domed garden pavilion beyond. Serafini's approach was one of deliberate restraint: preserve the fabric, introduce contemporary furniture in a register quiet enough not to compete. The fourteen rooms carry that logic through to the ceilings, where original painted friezes — fan-shaped palmettes in cobalt and ochre in some rooms, geometric stucco borders in dusty sage in others — survive above walls washed in limewash tones of celadon and pale sand. Beds are dressed simply in white linen, flanked by black articulated reading lamps — the kind of industrial-archive fixture that keeps a room from tipping into pastiche. Original majolica and encaustic tile floors ground the spaces in their Salentine provenance. Outside, a pool cut into the Lecce stone terrace is edged by ivy-covered ancient walls and columnar cacti, the garden set for dinner at a long stone table with cushioned drum stools — an arrangement that makes the antiquity feel entirely usable rather than museological.

"We were disappointed with our visit. We had heard that this hotel was very special and beautiful and that is true with respect to the public spaces. The suite we got was awful. It was two large rooms with a bathroom. But to get into the bathroom, you hd to duck your head. The floor was not flat but followed the contours of the vaulted ceiling below. We move to an other room for the next two night. It was also not very nice but at lease I did not have to break my head going to the toilet. The restaurant has a very limited menu that is repeated for lunch and dinner but there are some specials every night. The setting for meals was lovely. You could eat in different location. The service fine. That staff was very nice and helpful but the quality of service was not what you would expect for the prices being paid. The location offers very little. You have to driver to go to any place nice for a meal. They say it is not really a hotel and more like a home. Well, I agree with the first part. But knowing everything I now know, I might have considered one night even with the crazy rooms. It is really beautiful!"

"I paid premium rates for a room at Palazzo Daniele expecting the bathroom shown in the listing. The photos and description were misleading: the actual bathroom is completely different, with the shower located down a flight of stairs in a separate room — something never disclosed in the booking. To make matters worse, there are no photos of this type of bathroom on the hotel’s own website either, so there was no way for me to anticipate what I was actually booking. The bathroom we received was reminiscent of a U.S. roadside motel, with the level of cleanliness, the poor appearance, and harsh, scary lighting that made it feel like a dingy basement. The hotel even admitted the photos online were wrong (blaming a booking partner), yet refused to offer any fair resolution. Sadly, the problems didn’t stop there. The room itself had multiple issues: 1. Electrical problems and lights not working properly 2. Incorrect WiFi information provided at check-in 3. Dirty floors with a visible layer of dust that transferred onto our luggage, shoes, and feet 4. No luggage stands provided (I later requested them and was only given three for five pieces of luggage) What made this experience even worse was the complete lack of management response. Despite raising these issues during my stay, no manager ever came to speak with me, apologize, or attempt to remedy the situation. I saw the manager several times on the property, but they avoided me entirely — never acknowledging me or addressing the concerns. When the booking platform contacted the hotel on my behalf, the manager still refused to do anything. At this price point, the bare minimum expectation is attentive service and accountability when things go wrong. Instead, I received misrepresentation, a poorly maintained room, and dismissive treatment. Until this hotel corrects its listings, fixes basic maintenance and cleanliness, and trains management to actually respond to guests, I would strongly caution others against booking here."

"Great authentic hotel. They don't want to be a hotel, they want to be an "experience" but you can stay as if you were at a hotel.... Not a traditional hotel, but still a hotel. Rooms are a bit eccentric and unique, especially some of the bathrooms, but we loved our experience. Fantastic old palazzo, with high ceilings, murals, unique rooms, courtyards and a fantastic garden, outside pool and bar. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The surrounding village is a remote Italian village, not that much to see, but a few charming restaurants, and it's fun hanging out on the piazza in front of the palazzo after dinner. Breakfast is a la carte in the garden and dinner can be arranged flexibly as well. would highly recommend if you're interested in exploring the southern tip of Puglia and Salento."

"Lovely lodging in an authentic little town off the beaten path. The building is beautiful and well-maintained. The pool is wonderful. Our bed was comfortable and our room was clean and quiet. My wife and I ate breakfast and dinner at the inn. Delicious. We sat and drank wine in the kitchen and chatted with the chef while our dinner was being prepared. The staff was kind and attentive. Palazzo Daniele is certainly not a chain hotel, but for those looking for a unique, well-run lodging in southern Italy, I highly recommend it."

"I am amazed by these rave reviews. Palazzo Daniele is a once-beautiful historic building that has been allowed to deteriorate, has been the subject of only cursory restoration, and is still in dire need of basic maintenance and repair. It’s beyond me why your reviewers seem to think that crumbling plasterwork, flaking paint, rusting ironwork and meals served in chipped crockery, not to mention guest accommodation and appointments that make Premier Inns look like five star luxury, deserve such acclaim. And all charged for at eye wateringly expensive rates. Phrases used by your reviewers such as "a truly unique concept of style, beauty and historical values" and "a truly marvellous experience" make me wonder if they were at the same place that I was. And as for the smug and pretentious claim of one of your reviewers that those guests who may share my opinions "don't get the concept", I'd suggest that that is classic case of the Emperor’s New Clothes - that particular person seems to be oblivious to the place's blindingly obvious shortcomings. Its only saving grace is its staff - without exception lovely people, mostly young, attentive, intelligent and helpful. All a delight to deal with. One can only hope that they don’t realise that they are participants in a charade - the pretence being that this shabby pile is somehow a top quality boutique hotel."
