PB hotel design editorial

Via Veneto's most storied address was already a landmark before Baglioni Hotel Regina claimed it — the palazzo dates to the early twentieth century and was famously commandeered as the headquarters of the German military command during the Second World War, a history that lends the salmon-pink facade and its white stucco cornicing an unlikely gravity. Five floors of Umbertine architecture rise above a rusticated base, arched windows framed by elaborate relief work that catches the uplighting beautifully in the image here, the building's corner position giving it a civic presence that most hotels on the street cannot match. Inside, the interiors move between two registers. The guest rooms carry a restrained Art Deco sensibility — white Carrara marble floors inlaid with dark diamond motifs, linen-upholstered headboards, grasscloth wall panels set within plaster mouldings, and a recurring thread of vintage black-and-white photography that anchors the rooms in mid-century Roman glamour. The suites step up in drama: smoky Murano glass chandeliers hang over blue damask bedding, with wraparound balconies opening onto rooftop views across the city. The restaurant takes an entirely different tone, its dark-stained oak floors, tufted gold and black striped banquettes, hammered metallic wall surfaces, pierced brass pendant lanterns, and vertical decorative elements borrowed loosely from ancient Roman fasces creating an atmosphere that is frankly theatrical — a deliberate counterpoint to the palazzo's composed exterior.

"Outstanding service in a classic hotel. In an upmarket location, this hotel has fine rooms, great food (including breakfast accompanied by a harpist at the weekends), and classically decorated rooms. What sets the hotel apart is its service."

"I booked Baglioni hotel Regina as a surprise for my husband’s 40th birthday. It was a bit of a splurge because it was a special birthday and I am so pleased with this pick! The hotel is absolutely stunning. Understated and elegant with old world charm. The food and amenities were fabulous but their success rests with the impeccable service delivery. The hospitality staff were so lovely and couldn’t do enough to ensure we had a relaxing, luxurious stay. They spoilt us and it was truly the icing on a wonderful holiday. A special mention has to to go to front of house Olga who was so patient and helpful with all our different enquiries. Thank you for making our stay so memorable! It is a holiday we will treasure."

"This is an extremely classy, service-first hotel with what I gather is a history of doing things up for some famous folks over its long history. You can't approach the front door without having it opened for you. Marble everywhere. Even in your room. They put a small towel with a pair of slippers next to your bed at turndown, in case you don't want to walk on a stone floor. We had a Junior Suite, btw, which was spacious and nice. The breakfast is ample, super satisfying for any taste, both healthy and indulgent and the room is well-staffed. We walked to a lot of places from here, including the Villa Borghese and Saint Paul's Within The Walls church for the Three Tenors concert (highly recommend this). One of our tours was happy to come to the hotel. The other was a 6-7 minute walk. The Capuchin Crypt is even closer. You could make the Spanish Steps in 10 or so, I think. There are also plenty of restaurants in the neighborhood, including a couple that don't close between lunch and dinner, which can be handy. There's also a cabstand catty corner from the front door, only paces away. There were always cabs there in January. We could've easily grabbed one to the airport instead pre-booking a more expensive ride, had we known. And by the way, the official white cabs in Rome are not expensive and most take cards. I don't think we paid more than about 9-11 Euro for any ride within the city walls. They have a spa in the basement with a small fitness center just off the elevator. I was a little worried at first, because there was only one treadmill. But I was the only customer the three times I went, so no problem. They also had mats and dumbbells, which I appreciated. A top-notch hotel, from top to bottom with a staff anxious to please. It's upscale and most guests were dressed nicely on their way in and out. But we were in jeans and nice tops at breakfast and were not the only ones; plenty of folks readying for their day of city touring looking pretty much like us."
