PB hotel design editorial

Straddling two ground-floor arches of a weathered Renaissance palazzo steps from Piazza Navona, the entrance to G Rough announces its central argument immediately: brass-framed glass doors set into rusticated stone that centuries of Roman damp have worked into something close to fresco. The hotel, which opened in 2017 across six rooms within a seventeenth-century building on Via del Governo Vecchio, was conceived by owner Guido Biondi as a deliberate act of non-restoration — walls stripped back to their damaged plaster and left there, exposed timber ceiling beams darkened by age, parquet laid over bare slab without apology for the gap between old and new. Into that archaeology, the interiors layer Italian mid-century furniture sourced through patient collecting: walnut-and-teal wardrobes with the geometric panelling of Dassi or Dassi-adjacent cabinetmakers, articulated floor lamps in olive and duck-egg blue recalling Arredoluce and Stilnovo production from the 1950s, beds framed in pale yellow lacquer with the low-slung proportions of early Gio Ponti. The bar and restaurant push harder — walls clad in smoked mirror tiles laid in a grid that multiplies the arched vaulting infinitely, original checkerboard floor tiles surviving beneath leather club chairs and walnut-armed sofas, a great Palladian window flooding the dining room with courtyard light. The overall atmosphere sits somewhere between Roman apartment and film set, which is more or less what Biondi intended.

"This is the best hotel I have ever been to! The staff was really nice, attentive and caring, especially Yasmina and Denisa. The room was huge, beautiful and and well equipped. The amenities ranged from comfortable bathrobes to high quality toiletries. The location was unparalleled- at the city center, close to many attractions and yet quiet. The breakfast, which was served to the room every morning at a time of our choice, was good as well. We will definitely come back"

"We had a lovely stay 2 years ago and came back for the vibe. Unfortunate since then they had to stop serving breakfast and no longer are able to have a bar - both were big positives and where things we really enjoyed. While it sounds like an issue out of their control, they should have notified us prior. The breakfast voucher that we were given was not nearly as good and we skipped it the second day. I rarely write reviews unless there are a few things. People weee nice, but for some reason made a reservation for a restaurant at a different date then we were there. Our espresso machine was not working and was never replaced. They offered to make one for the morning we were leaving for our flight so an order was put in the night before, but when I asked for it that morning they said it was not possible as the machine was being cleaned. The theme is nice and the rooms are well crafted, but a bit dark. However the lack of bar and breakfast would have us not return especially in that we were not informed of the change."

"As a luxury travel advisor with over two decades of experience, I’m always on the hunt for properties that offer something truly distinctive—and G-Rough is exactly that. Nestled steps away from Piazza Navona and within walking distance of Rome’s most iconic sites, this refined boutique hotel offers a rare blend of authentic Roman charm and modern, artistic sophistication. From the moment you step inside, G-Rough feels more like a curated experience than a typical hotel stay. The décor is bold yet intimate, with mid-century design elements and original architectural features that give the space both soul and style. Each suite is thoughtfully unique, offering a true sense of place—perfect for travelers who crave something beyond the predictable. Service was warm, attentive, and refreshingly personalized. From pre-arrival communication to in-stay touches, the staff made every detail feel intentional. For my clients, and for myself, this level of service is what transforms a stay from “nice” to memorable. I chose G-Rough for a pre-cruise stay and found it ideal for that purpose. The location allows for effortless exploration of Rome before heading to the port, and the quiet luxury of the hotel makes it a perfect place to recharge before embarking. This is exactly the kind of property travel advisors can unlock for their clients—boutique, high-touch, and often missed by online booking engines. Working with a travel professional doesn’t just save you time—it gives you access to hidden gems like this that are perfectly tailored to your travel style. Whether you’re a first-timer in Rome or a seasoned traveler looking for a hotel with real personality, G-Rough is a standout. I’ll continue recommending it to clients who want more than just a place to sleep—they want an experience that becomes part of the journey."

"Went in early morning of May 5th Waitress adorable. So sweet even let me use iPhone charger. We ordered and drank 4 cappuccino’s. Perfect visit Next day around 5pm my friends sat in little restaurant and ordered wine. They were sitting drinking. My husband ordered 2 coffees never got them. I came in knowing where washroom was from day before. I was at exit waiting to meet up with someone. This (lady) from G Rough started screaming at me. My friends still sitting there were somewhat embarrassed. I said why are you so mean! I left a few seconds later I returned as I wanted to know what actually just happened!!?? I was thinking maybe because I used the loo?? So I asked her again why are you so mean? She again was extremely rude so I flipped her the bird and said something not nice and she responded same gesture! Wow! After reading the reviews I see I’m not the first to experience this kind of behaviour! What happened to customer service?"
