PB hotel design editorial

The date carved above the arched entrance — A.MDCCCXLXXXVIII, placing the building's completion in 1888 — announces that Hotel Chapter Roma is working with a structure that arrived long before boutique hospitality was a category. Set on Via di Santa Maria de' Calderari in the Regola rione, the palazzo's rusticated travertine facade has the solid, self-assured grammar of late nineteenth-century Roman civic architecture, its proportions unchanged despite the contemporary steel-framed windows cut into the ground floor to display a figurative sculpture that signals the hotel's appetite for art programming. Inside, the conversion keeps the original brick walls exposed throughout — pale yellow Roman brick visible in both the guestrooms and the ground-floor restaurant, where marble-topped tables and velvet tub chairs in taupe sit beneath Murano glass chandeliers in an atmosphere closer to a candlelit private club than a hotel dining room. Guest rooms layer dark-stained oak floors, forest-green upholstered bed frames with scalloped headboards, terrazzo bedside tables, and touches of blush pink and amber velvet that give the interiors a mid-century Roman sensibility without sliding into pastiche. The rooftop terrace pulls sharply in a different direction — terracotta paving, Acapulco chairs in yellow, printed cushions, and a neon sign with the Vittoriano monument visible on the horizon — trading the palazzo's measured gravity for something entirely more festive.

"VERY NICE STAY! What I loved most about the Chapter Roma was the location. Walking distance to EVERYTHING important in Rome. Located across the river, 4 blocks from the Trastevere neighborhood (where SO many great restaurants are located) the Chapter Roma is also a 15 minute walk to the Pantheon and Piazza Novona. Honestly we also were able to walk to the Colosseum as well but thats a little longer. The rooms were comfortable. The breakfast was very good. I would especially give the hotel manager, Gianmarco, a big shout out. What an impressive, courteous, friendly and informative young man. I was very appreciative of him and his service. The Chapter Roma isnt a luxury hotel, but it IS a very nice and comfortable hotel located in a very safe and accessible part of Rome!"

"A lovely smallish hotel in the centre of Rome near the ghetto area and close enough to the river to pop over to Trastevere. Staff are super friendly - especially the people at reception - and the room was spacious, nicely decorated and had a modern vibe to it. A few small things to note: the shower was only a rainfall one and was quite powerful (not great for kids! But fantastic for adults) and the toilet flush appeared broken so I needed to press it a few times. Other than that the stay was perfect, breakfast was a good spread each day, they had eggs for hot food, or continental items too but I wanted to head out into Rome for food too in the morning so only had a little bit to eat. The bar attached to the hotel is very good too as is the fancy restaurant. I’d recommend this place for a stay if you’re in a couple and want a hip hotel that’s near to everything."

"Made to feel so welcome the minute we walked in the door. The staff are a credit to the owners of the hotel. We were staying to celebrate our 20th anniversary and Sofia had organised an upgrade for us. She also spent as much time as we needed with any questions and explaining what to see around Rome. Thanks to the manager for the glass of Prosecco upon arrival too. The room was just what we wanted - big, clean and very modern. The staff in the bar were just as excellent and great fun - Alan and another Sofia (or Sophia). We would not hesitate to stay here when in Rome again. Indeed, we wouldn’t even bother considering other hotels. It is also excellently located. The staff are among the best we’ve dealt with worldwide. Thank you all for contributing to a wonderful weekend."

"I really wanted to give Chapter Roma a great review because the hotel itself is very cool, but we had some major issues that made our 5-night stay really stressful. First, the room we were given looked nothing like the photos on Expedia or the website. It was significantly smaller and felt like a bait-and-switch for the price we paid. On top of that, the shower rod fell on us the first day, and the bathroom flooded every single time we showered for the entire trip. Even after they "fixed" it twice, the water kept going everywhere. The worst part, though, was our checkout. The hotel called a taxi for us to the airport, and the driver tried to scam us. He demanded €65 instead of the legal €55 flat rate and actually refused to let us out of the car until we paid the higher amount. It was honestly a scary situation to be held in a vehicle like that. While the management has been very apologetic via email and is investigating the driver, the combination of the room misrepresentation and the safety issue with the taxi made this a really disappointing experience."
