PB hotel design editorial

Perched at the crown of the Via Sistina where it meets the top of the Spanish Steps, the building that houses Hotel de la Ville has held one of Rome's most covetable addresses since the nineteenth century — a position that gives even standard rooms a roofline panorama stretching west to the dome of St Peter's. Rocco Forte Hotels acquired and comprehensively restored the property, reopening it in 2019 with interiors led by Olga Polizzi and her daughter Margherita Caproni, who together developed a scheme rooted in Roman Grand Tour imagery and the layered decorative language of the palazzo interior. The terracotta-washed cortile courtyard, dressed with red-and-white striped umbrellas and bistro chairs arranged around white-clothed tables, anchors the hotel's social life beneath a sky framed by pilastered facades and green shuttered windows thick with potted plants. Inside, rooms shift between two distinct moods: one anchored in teal damask wallcovering, Greek key-banded headboards in burnt orange stripe, and ebonised case furniture set against herringbone oak floors; another lighter in register, with olive velvet tufted settees, moss-green curtains trimmed in Greek key braid, and views through full-height casements to umbrella pines above the neighbouring rooftops. The restaurant's black-and-white marble chequerboard floor, steel-ringed chandeliers, and Flemish-style verdure tapestry murals wrapped around teal panelled columns establish a different pitch entirely — more Parisian brasserie filtered through Roman antiquarianism. Across the hotel's 104 rooms and suites, the effect is of a private collection assembled over generations rather than a single decorating campaign.

"I cannot say enough to describe how absolutely wonderful this hotel is! It was our first time staying there and it took our breath away. The hotel itself is a beautiful retreat from the busy and hot city during the summer and the staff are second to none. It was MAGICAL!"

"We hosted our wedding weekend welcome party at Cielo, and it couldn’t have been a more perfect way to kick off the celebrations. From the moment our guests arrived, everyone was blown away by the setting. The rooftop views over Rome are simply breathtaking, and the atmosphere as the sun set made for such a special evening. So many of our friends and family have told us it was one of the highlights of the entire weekend. The food and drinks were outstanding, and the service throughout the evening was warm, attentive, and seamless. The team made everything feel effortless, allowing us to relax and enjoy every moment with our guests. If you’re looking for a venue in Rome for a special celebration, I honestly can’t recommend Cielo highly enough. In our opinion, it’s the best rooftop venue in the city by a mile. We’re so grateful to the entire team for helping create such an unforgettable evening."

"I booked this hotel several months in advance and was willing to pay such a premium price because I was traveling with my adult son and the two story room and 1 1/2 baths allowed us much appreciated privacy and space since I wake up much earlier and want to be able to make coffee, read etch while my son is sleeping.. The extra 1/2 bath also allowed more privacy, helped with both of us getting ready, and ability to spread out a little. We arrived at lunch time, ate at the hotel, and left about 2:15 to sight see when our room was still not unavailable which was not unexpected since it is not guaranteed until 3:00 pm. We got back about 9:30 pm very tired and ready for sleep and discover the hotel has "upgraded" us to a room without two levels and without an extra 1/2 bath and that also opened to a patio by the restaurant where a loud party was going out and made it quite noisy in our room. The party was still going on after the promised end time at 10 pm. We shared our disappointment with the front desk that the room which was the reason for the booking months in advance had not been provided and were told we could not switch. After the continued noise my son and I both went back down to the desk and again explain that this was in no way and "upgrade" and was clearly a bait and switch because someone more important than us wanted our promised room. The front desk finally found us another room with the promised layout but a double bed which I shared with my 6 ft 3 in adult son which they finally made available at 10:30. Ugh. So if you are important perhaps you will get the room you think you reserved but evidently only deserved the charade of a supposed "upgrade" so someone more special got the room we expected."

"Most wonderful property and hotel staff. We had the amazing experience. We had multiple rooms for my son’s wedding in Rome with friends and family. Everyone agreed it was most memorable and enjoyable. We held the welcome party on their beautiful upper terrace. The entire team was beyond kind and helpful. The concierge team accommodated our every need from dining to transportation. The housekeeping team was delightful whether we needed a flat iron, something laundered or seamstress repair. Rooms were very beautiful and so comfortable. Even room service was expedient and always friendly not to mention delicious. Breakfast on the upper terrace was the best way to start your day with the friendliest greeting from their team. In planning the event weeks preceding our arrival was made so easy with communication with Serena and her team. Together they were responsive, kind and made everything easy. We had an event for 100 people and all agreed that it was amazing from food to the most beautiful garden setting. We cannot wait to go back. If your are looking for a 5 star experience this is it! We’ve travelled the world and stayed at the nicest hotels. This one is a favorite with the best location in Rome."
