PB hotel design editorial

Wine labels framed like old masters. That curatorial instinct — applying the reverence usually reserved for fine art to the labels of Quintarelli Amarone and Biondi-Santi Brunello — tells you almost everything about Hotel De' Ricci before you've registered the cobblestones outside or the warm terracotta render of its sixteenth-century palazzo facade on Via Giulia, one of Rome's most architecturally coherent Renaissance streets. The property's organizing idea is Italian fine wine: each of its nineteen rooms takes its palette and character from a specific producer or varietal, the labels mounted above beds in oversized frames that give the spaces something of a private collector's study rather than a conventional hotel room. The interiors work a confident mid-century Italian register — velvet button-back armchairs in olive and gold that carry the easy authority of Gio Ponti's idiom, Eames-era occasional chairs, parquet laid in wide planks, and slim floor lamps with articulated brass arms. Tropical fresco-painted panels appear behind beds in several rooms, their sun-bleached palette of ochre and sage playing against dusty blue and pale yellow walls. The wine bar anchors the ground floor with a walnut display cabinet stocked like a serious enoteca, surrounding a low seating arrangement of tufted velvet and a geometric-tiled floor. Upstairs, the restaurant's smoked-mirror panelling and geometric-patterned barrel chairs in olive velvet give the dining room the atmosphere of a Roman club circa 1965.

"We have had the pleasure of staying in Rome hotels a number of times prior, and Hotel de'Ricci is now our favorite. One reason is the location in the Centro Storico, which is ideal - a three minute walk to Campo de' Fiori, which we enjoyed for its morning market and its bars and restaurants for lunch, aperitivo, and dinner. A three minute walk to the Tiber and its beautiful bridges to Castel Sant' Angelo and Trastevere. An eight minute walk to Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, and all the restaurants in the Centro Storico. And of course, a very manageable walk to all the other highlights: the Forum, the Colosseum, the Vatican, Spanish Steps. On the other hand, if walking isn't your thing, taxis are easy to get and reasonably priced. The hotel itself is beautiful, stylish, comfortable, and actually less expensive than some of the larger well-known Rome hotels. They not only had our room ready when we arrived at 10 am after an overnight flight, but they gave us an upgrade to a lovely suite with a large balcony, which was perfect for relaxing with a glass of wine after all that walking. The bed was very comfortable; the bathroom was perfect, with a rain type shower, gleaming tile, luxurious towels and robes, The included generous breakfast was personally served, with an array of pastries, fruits, meats, cheeses, eggs as requested, etc. The beautiful room where breakfast is served becomes a stylish cocktail lounge in the evening. We enjoyed some excellent glasses of wine there from their extensive list. The management and staff are all very friendly and professional. They provided warm, personal attention throughout our stay. Thank you to all of them! We will be back!"

"Our only regret with Hotel de Ricci is that we didn't get to stay longer. Wonderful hotel in a perfect quiet location that puts you equidistance between the Vatican, the Forum, Piazza Navona and Campo de Fiori. Breakfast was wonderful, and although we didn't get to partake in their wine offerings, they looked very, very good. Rooms were comfy, quiet tasteful, and well appointed."

"We were at Hotel De Ricci for seven nights to celebrate our 45th anniversary. The hotel and staff are wonderful. We were greeted with a glass of prosecco on our arrival. The morning continental breakfast was very good. Perfect location. We were upgraded to the top floor suite with a beautiful terrace. The only issue we had is that they do have an enclosed cigar bar and unfortunately the smoke/smell drifts into the small bar/restaurant which is a major issue for those who have asthma or just doesn’t appreciate a cigar. The smell is still very apparent in the morning during breakfast so we had our breakfast delivered to our room each morning. Unfortunately we will need to look for another boutique hotel for next year."

"Best hotel ever. Staff are top notch. They help us with anything we needed like taxis and where to go to see what we wanted. Location is perfect for walking to all significant attractions. Halfway between the Coloseum and the Vatican. The private bar has a great wine selection and they serve excellent food."
