PB hotel design editorial

Since 1925, the pair of Liberty-style palazzi flanking a quiet street just steps from Piazza del Popolo have formed one of Rome's most quietly distinguished addresses. Hotel Locarno has changed remarkably little in the century since its founding — which is precisely the point. The facade visible in the image, with its white-painted stucco cornices, dark timber shutters, and a canopy of climbing greenery at street level, carries the atmosphere of a private Roman residence rather than a hotel, the two buildings linked through ground-floor passages without any of the institutional signage that betrays most properties of comparable standing. Inside, the original Art Nouveau bones survive with extraordinary completeness. Bedrooms retain hand-painted floral frescoes — rococo arabesque borders in ochre and sage framing trompe-l'oeil panels — alongside parquet laid in herringbone, Murano glass chandeliers, and antique walnut armoires with inlaid mirrors. The bar, anchored by vaulted arches and an original fireplace, is furnished with bentwood café chairs upholstered in William Morris-adjacent floral prints, the aged fresco ceiling left deliberately unrestored. A rooftop terrace, planted with terracotta-potted citrus and Mediterranean herbs and furnished with rattan chairs around small iron tables, surveys the Roman roofline at dusk in a manner that feels entirely domestic. With around 66 rooms across five floors, the Locarno remains family-owned — its loyalty to its own period identity a form of resistance that grows more valuable each decade.

"Hotel Locarno truly stole my heart. There is so much to love about the place, from the cool deco rooms, outstanding breakfast, and excellent cocktails. The Bar Locarno alone makes it worthwhile, and you can feel like an Italian sipping your Negroni or martini instead of a schleppy American tourist as you will be surrounded by stylish locals and can meld into the scene! The staff was so warm and genuine, it was a delight. They do well by taking care of little things, like making sure you get a cappuccino and pastries delivered to your room at 5AM as you leave for the airport, even though they don't do room service. We stayed for 6 days and every time we walked in out out we were given warm smiles. Beatrice was particularly kind. And again, the breakfast, which is usually not that exciting to me, was truly excellent and relaxing. Thank you Hotel Locarno, I will return sometime when the wisteria is in bloom!"

"I cannot rave enough about Hotel Locarno! It is by far one of the nicest hotels I’ve ever had the pleasure of staying in. The atmosphere was so welcoming, the service “outstanding” and the breakfast was delicious! The rooms are super clean with excellent turn down service as well. Noise level was fine and I think the location was perfect with walking distance to so many sites including the Spanish Steps. I’ve been to Rome three times so not sure I will be back. But if I decide to, I wouldn’t stay at any other hotel! Every single employee was kind, helpful and so accommodating. I can’t help but give a shout out to Davide and Marco who are like a stand up comedic team!!"

"My husband and I stayed here for a few days with our kids (10 & 13) during our Spring Break trip to Italy, and Hotel Locarno was our first stop. This property is as exquisite as its website portrays it to be. The decor is specatular, the people are lovely and outgoing (eager to assist you), the restaurant delivers beautiful meals and cocktails, and the rooms are strait out of an Architectural Digest magazine. The location on a quiet but gorgeous street made it simple for us to walk around the city. We stayed in adjoining rooms, which the kids thought felt like a beautiful Italian apartment. We can't recommend this property highly enough and hope we have the opportunity to return very soon. Thank you to the entire team at Hotel Locarno for taking such exceptional care of us!"

"This was our first visit to Hotel Locarno but I am confident it will not be our last. It was the perfect spot to enjoy Rome. Really well located and everything walkable. More importantly the hotel is just a gem. It has an unformal family feel but combined with top notch food and service. Amazing breakfast and great cocktails too. It was just so easy to relax. Thank you Hotel Locarno for looking after us so well."
