PB hotel design editorial

Since 1925, the pair of Liberty-style palazzi flanking a quiet street just steps from Piazza del Popolo have formed one of Rome's most quietly distinguished addresses. Hotel Locarno has changed remarkably little in the century since its founding — which is precisely the point. The facade visible in the image, with its white-painted stucco cornices, dark timber shutters, and a canopy of climbing greenery at street level, carries the atmosphere of a private Roman residence rather than a hotel, the two buildings linked through ground-floor passages without any of the institutional signage that betrays most properties of comparable standing. Inside, the original Art Nouveau bones survive with extraordinary completeness. Bedrooms retain hand-painted floral frescoes — rococo arabesque borders in ochre and sage framing trompe-l'oeil panels — alongside parquet laid in herringbone, Murano glass chandeliers, and antique walnut armoires with inlaid mirrors. The bar, anchored by vaulted arches and an original fireplace, is furnished with bentwood café chairs upholstered in William Morris-adjacent floral prints, the aged fresco ceiling left deliberately unrestored. A rooftop terrace, planted with terracotta-potted citrus and Mediterranean herbs and furnished with rattan chairs around small iron tables, surveys the Roman roofline at dusk in a manner that feels entirely domestic. With around 66 rooms across five floors, the Locarno remains family-owned — its loyalty to its own period identity a form of resistance that grows more valuable each decade.

"Wow! What a gem of a hotel just off the Piazza di Populo in Rome. This boutique property has been around for 100 years. Charming, luxury property. While the rooms are lovely and comfortable, the real standouts are the staff - everyone polite, charming, helpful. And the breakfast! Really stay at the Locarno for the breakfast alone! Every dish was an explosion of flavor. Your taste buds and tummy will be very happy."

"Beautiful place with excellent service in a prime location. The rooms are very nice, big bathroom, but the very very best is the breakfast in the patio."

"This is such a lovely hotel. If you have the opportunity to stay here don’t hesitate. The staff is exceptional, warm and welcoming. We stayed for 6 nights and every time we walked in or out they seemed genuinely happy to see us. Beatrice in particular was amazing and so helpful. The breakfast is fantastic, and they were generous with multiple coffees and juices. Eggs Benedict were perfection, and I’m still thinking about the ricotta toast with ripe juicy tomatoes. The bar is outstanding with excellent martinis and other mixed drinks. The outdoor courtyard is the perfect place to breakfast in the am or partake of an apertivo in the evening. Filled with stylish cool Italians, it is a wonderful atmosphere. Location is central but on a quieter street. I hope to be back one day when the wisteria is in bloom and the rooftop bar is open. Thank you Hotel Locarno for going out of your way for my sisters and I on our trip, you were outstanding!"

"This was our second stay at Hotel Locarno. As usual, very warm welcome and we were very appreciative that a room was ready for us when we arrived early. Service top notch and food was excellent as well. Great concierge service and very responsive. The location of Locarno is a big plus - both in a quiet street near to the central Piazza Del Popolo. You can’t ask for more. Room is beautifully decorated and very comfortable. Will definitely return."

"This was one of the most enjoyable stays my wife and I have had at a Hotel anywhere in the world. The Locarno is an elegant oasis in the heart of busting Rome with bay walking to all the main attractions yet tucked away on a quiet side street. The rooms were impeccable as was the food and especially the Service. All staff were professional, genuine and eager to make sure we enjoyed our stay. This was the best of classic old world service; refined, efficient and none of that North American over informality. We especially enjoyed cocktails, breakfast and dinner in the open air courtyard. Best eggs benedict ever."
