PB hotel design editorial

Few hotels anywhere in Europe can claim a rooftop restaurant with an unobstructed sightline to the Colosseum at dusk — yet that is precisely the situation Hotel Palazzo Manfredi has turned into its defining proposition. The building itself is a four-storey Roman palazzetto on Via Labicana, its ochre facade with classical pediment window surrounds and grey-green shutters dating to the nineteenth century, the Latin inscription FORTVNA DVCI running across the uppermost cornice like a declaration of intent. The conversion into a boutique hotel — just 18 rooms spread across a property of considerable intimacy — replaced the upper level with a glazed pavilion restaurant that appears almost too transparent against the ancient stone mass beyond. The interiors work in a palette of dove grey, warm ivory, and taupe, with geometric diamond-pattern wallcoverings and upholstered platform beds trimmed in polished chrome setting a tone that is quietly contemporary without distancing itself from the building's classical bones. Herringbone parquet and deep-pile rugs anchor the rooms, while oversized round mirrors in bleached frames and glass-fronted en-suite bathrooms add a lightness that stops the scheme from feeling heavy. On the rooftop terrace bar, woven outdoor chairs and glowing Foscarini-style table lamps arrange themselves against a balustrade, the illuminated Flavian amphitheatre rising directly behind — a view so compositionally extreme it risks theatre, and somehow earns it every time.

"My wife and I took a last minute trip to Rome and I found this hotel on the Hilton app. The small luxury hotels of the world are available to book via Hilton. The communication from the hotel between the time we booked and sour arrival was excellent. The hotel arranged for a driver to meet us at FCO and he was there to pick us up. You can request a driver to pick you up in a Rolls Royce or Lamborghini for a nice price of course. We arrived at the hotel around 12:30pm and they allowed us to check in. The staff are all very friendly and helpful, every member we interacted with was nice. The room was small but it was very nice and had everything we needed. They provided a welcome gift of a bottle of champagne and some items to eat, we appreciated that. The room shown in the pics did not have a view of the colosseum but we still enjoyed it. The best view in this hotel is from the bar. You will see some pictures attached. We were there at the end of February and the weather was beautiful. The bar had those pyramid glass tube heaters all over the bar area so I was comfortable in a short sleeve shirt while sitting next to one of those. I had to reserve the seating at the bar in advance so make sure to do that if you want to guarantee a good spot. Every seat was take when we were there. They have a package deal for €55 per person which includes two cocktails each and the food shown in my pictures. We enjoyed it, where else can you sit in front of an ancient colosseum and have a few cocktails. We don’t have a single complaint about this hotel or their staff, I recommend this place if you are going to Rome. We walked all over the city from here and felt safe at all times."

"An outstanding hotel with iconic views of the Colosseum. The hotel and rooms are opulent, whilst also feeling warm and homely. For those not fortunate enough to have a room with a Colosseum view, breakfast is served in their AROMA restaurant, with stunning views. I would challenge anyone to enjoy their breakfast without taking at least one photograph of the view, yes, it’s that good. This is a small well run establishment with a team that truly complement this stunning hotel."
