PB hotel design editorial

Few hotels anywhere in Europe can claim a rooftop restaurant with an unobstructed sightline to the Colosseum at dusk — yet that is precisely the situation Hotel Palazzo Manfredi has turned into its defining proposition. The building itself is a four-storey Roman palazzetto on Via Labicana, its ochre facade with classical pediment window surrounds and grey-green shutters dating to the nineteenth century, the Latin inscription FORTVNA DVCI running across the uppermost cornice like a declaration of intent. The conversion into a boutique hotel — just 18 rooms spread across a property of considerable intimacy — replaced the upper level with a glazed pavilion restaurant that appears almost too transparent against the ancient stone mass beyond. The interiors work in a palette of dove grey, warm ivory, and taupe, with geometric diamond-pattern wallcoverings and upholstered platform beds trimmed in polished chrome setting a tone that is quietly contemporary without distancing itself from the building's classical bones. Herringbone parquet and deep-pile rugs anchor the rooms, while oversized round mirrors in bleached frames and glass-fronted en-suite bathrooms add a lightness that stops the scheme from feeling heavy. On the rooftop terrace bar, woven outdoor chairs and glowing Foscarini-style table lamps arrange themselves against a balustrade, the illuminated Flavian amphitheatre rising directly behind — a view so compositionally extreme it risks theatre, and somehow earns it every time.

"My boyfriend and I had an amazing stay at Palazzo Manfredi. Seriously just an incredible experience. I was hesitant because the exclusivity comes with a price, but it was worth every single Euro. First, our room could not have had a better view. I mean, seriously, where else can you sit in bed and stare at the Colosseum? All night long?? (We were in Grand View J Suite 2). I wasn't convinced the actual view could look like the pictures, but it did--even more impressive in real life. And that was just the tip of the iceberg. The suite itself was awesome--the elevator opened into the sitting area of our suite. It was my boyfriend's birthday, and I had arranged for a cake for him. It was beautiful, so nicely done and delicious. They also had left fresh flowers, balloons, champagne, and all kinds of little snacks and fruit. And complimentary water. Breakfast in the Aroma restaurant was delicious--there was a buffet with everything you could want plus a menu to order eggs and the daily special. The room cost included breakfast and a top-notch transfer from the airport. Everything was so great--the bathroom, the shower with the rainfall shower head and special lighting (and yes, you could even look at the Colosseum from the shower!), the linens were amazing, mini-bar was fantastic, toiletries were superb, as were slippers and robe. And the staff was super friendly and helpful--from the first moment when they sit you down and offer you a prosecco or an espresso to showing you around the hotel and your room. When we were leaving, there was a charity run that closed down a lot of streets around the hotel, and our Uber drivers kept cancelling. The hotel staff were like family members rather than hotel staff--giving us sweets and offering cappuccinos while we waited, taking my phone to try to talk to the Uber drivers, offering to bring our luggage down the street to meet the driver, and ultimately getting a taxi that was able to get us where we going. Just an incredible experience all around. (I realize I keep saying "incredible" and "amazing," but no other adjectives seem sufficient....). It was the perfect stay in Rome."

"You are paying for the views and location. I thought the rooms would be a bit bigger for the price, and I was disappointed that there was no bar dedicated to hotel guests. The Michelin-star restaurant was ok at best, again paying for the view."

"My wife and I celebrated on anniversary at Hotel Palazzo Manfredi. This was a great decision. The front of house staff, consierge, management were very kind and gracious. The highlights being the cocktail bar, The Court and the restaurant Aroma. The service and attention to detail were beyond."
