PB hotel design editorial

Palazzo Borghese, the early seventeenth-century Roman palace whose irregular trapezoidal footprint earned it the nickname il cembalo — the harpsichord — is one of the more architecturally eccentric addresses in the city's historic centre. Hotel Vilon was carved from a wing of this storied structure, which has passed through the hands of the Borghese family and Napoleon's sister Pauline Bonaparte among others, and the interior design by Studio Inge Moore approaches that weight of history with confident irreverence rather than reverence. The celebrated internal courtyard, visible in the images as an ivy-draped garden dining room with arched French windows and wrought-iron lanterns, is the property's emotional core — a planted room that feels simultaneously ancient and entirely alive. Moore's palette inside runs to deep inky blues and hunter greens, set against white-panelled walls and dark herringbone floors. The bar and restaurant layer bold contemporary canvases against gilded baroque frames, brass pendant clusters drop from original plasterwork ceilings, and kilim runners cut across polished stone — a deliberate collision of periods that holds together through conviction and craft. Guest rooms carry the same layered approach: velvet sofas in mineral teal, Murano-style crystal chandeliers, and overscaled botanical paintings given the treatment of serious artworks rather than decorative wallpaper. Across its 18 rooms and suites, Vilon manages to feel like a private Roman palazzo rather than a hotel — which, given its address, is precisely the point.

"Wow! What a fantastic stay at Hotel Vilon. This was the nicest hotel I have ever stayed at both in terms of the physicial space and how attentive (but not intrusive) the service was. We enjoyed the quietness of the location despite it being close to everything. It was an oasis of calm after our daily touring. Our room had recenlty been renovated and faced over the beautiful gardens and was lovely! The interior of the hotel is gorgeous and peaceful. Breakfast was very nice and we appreciated the help from those at the front desk."

"The Vilon provided a mixed experience for us. The location is great; it's quietly placed on an off street in the Campo Marzio. It's also lovely and small, which gives it a boutique feeling. That said, we will not be staying there again due to several quite surprising events. First off, as we arrived in a taxi tired from our flight, there was no one to take our luggage. We had to lug it all up ourselves to the entrance, which is up some steps and is always locked. One must press a button that alerts the staff that you're there. I'm perfectly capable of bringing my own bags in, but I've never had to do that in a supposedly 5-star hotel. Worse, our departure had all the graciousness of paying for an item in a convenience store. No one at the sit-down reception desk bothered to smile, to ask if our stay was OK, or to make any attempt to be personal. They just handed us the bill and said goodbye. That's fine at a roadside motel but is utterly unacceptable here. However, the rooms are nice, and the staff is great if you bother to get to know them."

"My sister and I recently stayed and had an amazing time. The hotel staff is super friendly and helpful. The restaurant is fantastic! We had a meal that was nothing short of sublime. If I could give 10 stars I would. I highly recommend it. The location is perfect!"

"This hotel feels like a hidden oasis. It is down a narrow alleyway and has a sign so small that you wouldn’t know that it was there unless looking for it. Once inside, you will find an elegant and sumptuous environment, rich in details and beautiful finishes. We booked a terrace room and the manager generously upgraded us to the corner terrace suite. The terrace was spacious, with a table with two chairs as well as two surprisingly comfortable loungers. The terrace itself overlooked the magnificent Borghese Palazzio and its courtyard with statues and fountain. The suite itself was gorgeous and spacious, with a separate living room, full coffee-tea service, and a luxurious bathroom with a bidet. Water pressure was strong and hot water plentiful. The bedroom had a spacious walk-in closet, lovely comfortable bed, and good pillows. Each of the three rooms had a sophisticated Smart Control system. I enjoyed puzzling out the various functions but some guests might find it a bit complicated on first glance. Every night’s turndown service was thoughtful and lovely, laying out slippers on bedside mats, drinks, and a sweet elegantly presented in a jewel case. I understand that this hotel is known for its discreet and gracious service, and apparently draws a distinguished clientele for those in the know. I can see why! They made me feel like a valued guest and VIP in every way. Highly recommended!"
