PB hotel design editorial

Carved into a wing of the Palazzo Borghese — the early seventeenth-century Roman palace whose irregular footprint earned it the nickname il cembalo, the harpsichord — J.K. Place Roma brings Michele Böhm's interiors into conversation with one of the city's great aristocratic piles. Böhm, who established the J.K. Place aesthetic across Florence and Capri before arriving in Rome, worked with the palazzo's existing plasterwork cornices and room proportions as fixed coordinates, then layered a palette of warm grey, macassar ebony, and aged brass over them. The thirty-odd rooms carry the atmosphere of a privately assembled apartment rather than a managed hotel floor: four-poster beds in blackened steel hung with ivory linen, antique mercury-glass mirrors in gilt frames, and nightstands in high-gloss lacquer sit against walls painted in a single chalky tone that absorbs Roman afternoon light without reflecting it back. The public spaces shift the register considerably. A cocktail bar clad in fluted dark timber with a backlit honey onyx counter and bas-relief metalwork panels on the bar front carries the mood of a 1940s Roman private club, while a separate lounge painted in lacquer green with white-trimmed boiserie, terracotta leather bistro chairs, and a Sputnik chandelier in blackened brass tips toward the mid-century Italian design tradition of Ignazio Gardella or Luigi Caccia Dominioni. The cobbled Via di Campo Marzio outside, barely wider than a carriage, gives the entrance — travertine-framed, flanked by clipped box in matte black planters — exactly the discreet gravity the address demands.

"My husband and I stayed for 7 nights at this 'Leading Hotels of the World' member. All seemed lovely but after the first 3 nights all went downhill. To put our review in context - we are seasoned luxury travelers. This is our 6th time visiting Rome. Previously stayed at the Dorchester and St. Regis Rome. We visit Rome for the art and cuisine. We are discerning diners and spend considerable time doing due diligence so that we don't dine in mediocre tourist traps. Weeks before arrival the hotel send out a welcome letter with offer to make reservations. We decided to take them up on this. We sent links to 2 restaurants with specific dates and locations. One was a Sardinian fish restaurant on the outskirts of Rome, the other a popular Enoteca where we've been multiple times. Hotel sent back confirmation with dates. We did not think to cross check this email against ours. Turns out Hotel had made correct bookings but transposed the dates on the email. On Saturday (when we should have been at the fish restaurant) we showed up at the Enoteca - there was no reservation! Alarm bells should have gone off! Luckily the manager graciously gave us a table for 1 hour. On Monday (when we should have been at the Enoteca), prior to jumping into a taxi to head out to the Fish restaurant, I checked my notes and shocks went down our spines - it is closed on Mondays! Next day, we spoke at length with the Front Desk Manager who spoke fluent English. We repeatedly conveyed to her our dismay and stress. She repeatedly assured us that it was a genuine mistake (which we believed), and that she would look into it with the GM so that we do not leave with a bad taste in our mouths. Apparently to placate us: We were offered complimentary drinks at the bar. After sitting in the empty bar (around 9:30pm) for 15 minutes and no one showed up to take our order, we went upstairs to bed. A scented candle with a note 'sorry that we did not live up to your expectations' had been delivered to our room???!!! Do not insult someone who is paying over 1,000 Euros a night with a gift of a candle! In addition, we are not rookie tourists in a hurry to sightsee. A hotel is a refuge where we relax and enjoy its offerings. After the first 3 mornings, our breakfast experience went downhill. After repeated attempts of ordering a 'soft/runny' omelet, we gave up. My order of over easy eggs became a comedy. Our pastries looked like some anemic wonders. (We hear that the chef was siphoned off to their new aparthotel project). We have to acknowledge that all the staff are cheerful and welcoming and enthusiastic. Housekeeping is excellent and the room is enormous with a magnificent bathroom. Hotel is gorgeous. What a shame! Lost to sloppiness and amateurish management."

"Discrete cosy boutique hotel tucked away behind the Via Condotti. Superb service and rooms with delightful staff. This is a hotel that becomes your " home" , intimate and personal with the staff anticipating your every need. Refreshing relief from the many other hotels around the area that have busy lobbies and reception areas. A real gem in Rome..... don't miss it!"

"We had an exceptional stay and could not be more pleased with every aspect of this hotel. From the moment we arrived, the staff was warm, professional, and genuinely welcoming, making check-in seamless and stress-free. The accommodations were immaculate, beautifully appointed, and extremely comfortable, with thoughtful details that made the stay feel both luxurious and relaxing. The amenities were outstanding and well maintained, and the overall atmosphere of the property was calm, inviting, and elegant. Every interaction with staff members—whether at the front desk, housekeeping, or dining—was marked by friendliness, attentiveness, and a clear commitment to excellent service. The location was ideal, providing both convenience and a sense of retreat, and the overall experience exceeded my expectations in every way. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone seeking comfort, quality, and exceptional hospitality, and I look forward to returning in the future."
