PB hotel design editorial

Via Margutta has carried a particular mythology in Rome since the post-war years, when artists, filmmakers, and writers — Fellini and De Chirico among them — claimed the narrow lane behind Piazza del Popolo as their own. Margutta 19 was carved from a palazzo on this storied street, its ochre façade and stone-arched entrance sitting entirely unremarked upon from the cobbles outside, which is precisely the point. The interiors, designed with a contemporary Roman sensibility, deploy herringbone oak parquet throughout the rooms and restaurant, a material choice that grounds the otherwise assertive decorative language without softening it. That language announces itself most confidently in the rooms, where a geometric panel of gold and charcoal lacquered tiles — pixelated almost, like a Mondrian translated into brass — serves as both room divider and media wall, cantilevered over an X-frame console desk. The palette across the suites moves between warm taupe, saffron velvet, and ivory millwork with flush brass detailing, the effect closer to a well-appointed private apartment than a conventional hotel room. Downstairs, the Assaggia restaurant layers crimson velvet dining chairs and navy club seating beneath clusters of opaline globe pendants, a wall of aged botanical wallcovering anchoring the far end. The terrazzo and black granite entry floor, glimpsed beneath a walnut-trimmed arch, holds the building's older bones in conversation with everything that arrived after.

"This is the worst hotel I’ve been is not worthy to be called a five star hotel. The staff are very very unprofessional We broke through American Express and had to request of late checkout. Two of the staff said it was OK. They came in by 12:30. They were already charging us $350. This is pathetic."

"Margutta 19 has a premier location, but our stay was marred by systemic service failures and a complete lack of hospitality. For a boutique hotel at this price point, the experience was unacceptable. Arrival & Logistics: We booked a transfer through the hotel’s preferred driver, providing all details in advance. Despite this, we were repeatedly asked for the same information. Worse, we were never informed of local road closures. The driver dropped us off with all our luggage 1.4 km away from the hotel without warning, leaving us to navigate the streets on our own. Meanwhile, other drivers were navigating via different routes and still arriving to hotel. Room Condition: The room was not "luxury" ready. We had no hot water, and the room featured a broken window. These are basic maintenance issues that should never be present in a premium property. Bizarre Service Standards: The service at breakfast was truly unprofessional. While the restaurant was nearly empty, staff ignored us entirely. After we finally flagged someone down, they were dismissive. Curiously, a larger group that arrived later was greeted with warmth and immediate attention, while we were treated as an inconvenience. Management Absence: When I tried to raise these concerns, the front desk informed me no manager was available because it was "the weekend" and they couldn't even confirm if one would be there on Monday. If you are looking for the warm, attentive service typical of Rome’s best boutique hotels, look elsewhere. Margutta 19 offers the location, but fails entirely on the experience."

"Wonderful "small luxury hotel". The staff was great and the room was comfortable. You walk out the fornt door to a small quite street and are minutes away from excellent restaurants and a short walk to the Spanish Steps and the Piazza del Popolo as well as the Borghese Garden with a great view of Roma.Reception staff took care of all our needs. The Balcony on the 4th floor overlooking the garden was the best part, quiet and relaxing. The only noise was the flock Parakeets nesting in the palm tree, and they were quite colorful. Breakfast buffet was excellent. You get what you pay for!"

"Margutta 19 is a smaller boutique hotel tucked away in a peaceful corridor near several art galleries. The property is convenient to the Spanish Steps (about an 8 minute walk) and to many close by restaurants and shops. The lobby of the hotel is small but never felt crowded. The desk attendants were nice and even helped us secure reservations at a restaurant that turned out to be a real gem. We were served breakfast every morning, which included a tasty buffet (the chia seed pudding was a treat) and included the ability to order freshly scrambled or fried eggs. This is where I had the very best cold Americana with almond milk. I am not sure what the waiter did, but it was literally a cup of magic that he created each morning. I would drink this over cold brews any day! The room was comfortable and the bathroom was very spacious. The cleaning staff was on it and constantly kept the room clean and refreshed with waters and treats. We even received a complimentary bottle of wine! A small balcony with table chairs allowed us to relax in a garden setting, where you could always hear the birds chirping away. The hotel is somewhat farther from other attractions like the Colosseum and Vatican- I would highly recommend having the hotel call you a cab as we often made the trek in 95+ heat and it was a struggle. But if you are looking for a peaceful location away from the crowds and noise, then this is it."

"Loved the property. It's a hidden gem kind of hotel. Small, classy, quiet and intimate. Location can't be beat. Close to all the action but in a quiet side street. Steps from all the high-end shopping and dining. It's obvious that a lot of thought went into the design and interior decoration of the hotel, much more so than many five star hotels. The deluxe suite we stayed in is very comfortable and spacious. Everything in the room is well thought-out, created with high quality materials. The staff is always courteous and helpful. My only two minor complaints are : 1) The hot water in the shower isn't very hot. The faucet in the shower is kind of hard to figure out and I tried every other way to get the water to reach the hottest temperature, without much success. While the water was warm enough for spring time when we stayed, I'd be concerned if we were staying there in the winter. 2) The smoked salmon served at the buffet breakfast is not of good quality and is very fishy. The usual accompaniment to smoked salmon such as capers or lemon slices were also not provided. Hopefully these issues will be addressed because I'd love to return in a future trip!"
