PB hotel design editorial

A late nineteenth-century liberty-style villa set behind wrought-iron gates near Piazza del Popolo, its stucco facade articulated by rusticated pilasters, bracketed cornices, and a first-floor balustrade sheltering mature olive trees — this is the building that gave Palazzo Dama its architectural identity long before the hotel arrived. The Lungotevere property, converted and opened in 2021 under the Leone Hospitality group, brought in a design sensibility that honours the villa's aristocratic bones without freezing them in amber. Interiors were handled with a lightness that keeps the original plasterwork mouldings and deep-panelled walls reading as a continuous frame rather than period pastiche — each room lined in white with thin gilt-edged detailing, then furnished in a register closer to a well-travelled Roman family's home than a conventional grand hotel. The guest rooms, visible in the images, layer sage velvet headboards with brass picture lights, Persian-influenced rugs, and loose groupings of framed photography that give the walls a personal, accumulated quality. Eames rocker chairs in white fibreglass appear alongside floral-print sofas, a quietly confident mix of mid-century and traditional that never tips into eclecticism for its own sake. The restaurant is the bravest room: twin living palms grow through the floor to the ceiling height of the original salon, their fronds arching over Murano crystal chandeliers and a lacquered black bar with a brass-edged counter — a collision of tropicalia and Roman gilded-age grandeur that somehow holds together completely.

About

One of Rome's most exquisite palazzos opens its doors to begin a new chapter in its regal history as the Palazzo Dama: a magnificent destination hotel that redefines luxury in the Eternal City, welcoming guests to experience Rome in a majestic, full-service villa. The legacy of Palazzo Dama is steeped in the history of the Malaspina family, one of the oldest noble families in Europe and the palazzo's inhabitants for over a century. Constructed near the banks of the Tiber river, the Roman villa was both the Malaspina home and host to high society gatherings where the family entertained diplomats, aristocrats and prominent cultural and social figures. Palazzo Dama is named to honor the dignified elegance of the aristocratic woman - the dama in Italian - among the Malaspina generations. Today, Palazzo Dama retains its eminent historical beauty, but has been transformed into a luxurious destination that is not just a place to stay but a place to escape, complete with a private club and bar, as well as an outdoor pool that are set to become Rome's new hotspots for a discerning, international clientele. Steps from Piazza del Popolo, the hotel offers the unique experience of a grand villa situated at the very heart of Rome, where guests can choose from any number of events and experiences in Italy's capital city. Designed by architect Antonio Girardi, who oversaw the entire renovation, 29 rooms and suites have been conceived as light-filled sojourns where guests can enjoy their Roman stays in the comfort of exquisitely appointed spaces. An elegant pool invites visitors to relax in the lush, secluded garden surrounded by olive and lemon trees. On the rooftop, a private terrace offers the chance to delight in an evening aperitivo, accompanied by spectacular views that sweeps from the Tiber to the Vatican, across the breathtaking cityscape of Rome's cupolas and terracotta rooftops. Inside the hotel, the PACIFICO ROMA Restaurant has opened on March 2017 offres a nikkei peruvian cuisine managed by the Chef Jaime Pesaque.

"The property is very beautiful and thoughtfully designed, with a pleasant atmosphere throughout. The service was good and the staff were helpful and welcoming during the stay. The rooms were spacious and generally clean, although some areas could benefit from renovation or a refresh. In terms of location, it is a bit far from the main tourist attractions, but this wasn’t a major issue and can actually be a good option if you’re happy to explore the surrounding area or enjoy a quieter setting."
