PB hotel design editorial

At number 23 Via dei Condotti, one of Rome's most photographed streets, a discreet arched doorway beside a Salvatore Ferragamo boutique opens into what is, in effect, a private residence that happens to accommodate guests. Portrait Roma — the Ferragamo family's own hotel, launched in 2012 under their Lungarno Collection — was conceived by Michele Bönan as the antithesis of grand-hotel theatrics: fourteen suites carved from a historic palazzo, each configured as an apartment rather than a room, with kitchen facilities and living areas that dissolve the boundary between stay and inhabit. Bönan's interiors draw their palette from the fashion house's own archive, threading Ferragamo iconography — enlarged photographic prints of shoes and ateliers, displayed in white box frames — through rooms that otherwise maintain a composed, almost austere modernity. Dark wenge-stained timber panels anchor the bedroom headwall compositions, set against Carrara marble and upholstered beds in pale linen grey. Mid-century Italian furniture pieces — walnut sideboards with brass pulls, leather-topped benches — sit alongside custom seating in ice-blue chenille, the whole held together by striped wool carpeting in silver and warm taupe. Above it all, a rooftop terrace furnished in teak and natural canvas frames an unobstructed view across the Roman roofline to the Vittoriano, bougainvillea climbing the pergola columns in the particular way that only Rome permits.

"When in Rome, there are two things you simply must do. First, find the right place to stay. Rome offers no shortage of beautiful hotels and then there is Portrait Roma. It is not only the finest address in the city, but one of the finest anywhere in the world. It has everything you need and nothing you don’t. If you have ever longed for the kind of service that has all but vanished from the industry, this Ferragamo property will restore your faith in it. I’ve returned more than once to be certain, and having stayed at many of the world’s great hotels, I can say without hesitation that Portrait Roma stands at the very top. Second, and no less essential, rent a Vespa. To truly know Rome, you must venture beyond the old walls, where the history, the charm, and the romance of the city stretch on for miles. And there is no better way to chase an adventure than astride that most enduring of Roman classics: the Vespa."

"Portrait Roma was a beautiful place to stay and the perfect way to end our time in Rome. The location is great, right near Via Condotti and the Spanish Steps, yet it still feels private, peaceful and removed from the crowds. It made exploring Rome super easy while still feeling calm, elegant and exclusive. We arrived at around 11:30am and our room was already ready, which was such a treat, and we were also very kindly upgraded from a Portrait Studio to a Studio Deluxe. That was a lovely surprise and set the tone for the rest of our stay. The hotel itself is gorgeous. It feels refined, luxurious and stylish, but also warm and welcoming rather than formal or stiff. Our room was stunning and extremely comfortable, and every detail felt thoughtful and high quality. The Lifestyle Team were amazing throughout our stay. Being able to communicate with them so easily via WhatsApp made everything feel smooth and effortless. They arranged our reservation at Armando al Pantheon for us, which we really appreciated. In fact, on our second night we considered asking for their dinner recommendation as well, then decided to just wing it, and ended up regretting that decision. We should have trusted their guidance again. Breakfast on the rooftop was also a real highlight and such a lovely way to start the day. The rooftop itself is beautiful and the perfect spot to enjoy an aperitivo as well. The whole experience at Portrait Roma felt polished, calm and special from beginning to end. Portrait Roma delivered everything you would hope for from a luxury hotel, but with warmth, intimacy and genuine care. We absolutely loved our stay and would return without hesitation."
