PB hotel design editorial

At number 23 Via dei Condotti, one of Rome's most photographed streets, a discreet arched doorway beside a Salvatore Ferragamo boutique opens into what is, in effect, a private residence that happens to accommodate guests. Portrait Roma — the Ferragamo family's own hotel, launched in 2012 under their Lungarno Collection — was conceived by Michele Bönan as the antithesis of grand-hotel theatrics: fourteen suites carved from a historic palazzo, each configured as an apartment rather than a room, with kitchen facilities and living areas that dissolve the boundary between stay and inhabit. Bönan's interiors draw their palette from the fashion house's own archive, threading Ferragamo iconography — enlarged photographic prints of shoes and ateliers, displayed in white box frames — through rooms that otherwise maintain a composed, almost austere modernity. Dark wenge-stained timber panels anchor the bedroom headwall compositions, set against Carrara marble and upholstered beds in pale linen grey. Mid-century Italian furniture pieces — walnut sideboards with brass pulls, leather-topped benches — sit alongside custom seating in ice-blue chenille, the whole held together by striped wool carpeting in silver and warm taupe. Above it all, a rooftop terrace furnished in teak and natural canvas frames an unobstructed view across the Roman roofline to the Vittoriano, bougainvillea climbing the pergola columns in the particular way that only Rome permits.

"Our family trip to Rome was unforgettable thanks to our stay at the Portrait Roma. From the moment we arrived, a warm greeting and enthusiastic staff made us feel truly welcome. Everyone there went above and beyond for both us and our 12YO son. The location made sightseeing and shopping effortless. There is a beautiful view of the Spanish Steps from the hotel. We found that we could walk to almost every sight and restaurant we wanted. Spacious rooms, outstanding service, warm, attentive hospitality and truly tailored recommendations made this a perfect five-star stay for our family. We can’t wait to return! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐"

"We had a lovely time at Portrait Roma. The hotel is small and perfectly located. The room was delightful. The staff could not have been more helplful and assisted us with many things--booking all our dinner reservations, arranging an excellent tour of old Rome, etc. Breakfast was delicious."

"My stay at Portrait Roma was truly outstanding. The hotel blends elegance, comfort, and an intimate atmosphere perfectly, making it feel like a private residence in the heart of Rome. A special mention goes to the breakfast team — they were absolutely fantastic. Dynamic, attentive, and genuinely warm, they made each morning feel special. Their energy and seamless service created such a welcoming start to the day, and they went above and beyond to ensure everything was perfect. A beautiful property made even better by an exceptional team. Five stars all the way."

"A fantastic hotel. There are only 14 rooms so this is a very high touch hotel - the ratio of staff to guest is very, very high. And the staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. (We mentioned that we admired the boxed cocktail set and wanted to buy some to gift our friends. Could not be found anywhere in Rome! So they found some in their storeroom and gave them to us.) There is not a large shared ground floor lobby, but rather a beautiful rooftop bar and lounge. So the feel is more like walking into your own pied-a-terre, rather than a hotel. It is two blocks from the Spanish Steps, in the middle of luxury boutique shops so it is central. Perhaps too central? That is up to you. We went in February. In July and August, I imagine the neighborhood is a zoo. However, I would assume the hotel is shielded from that once you get in. It's a trade-off. Bottom line - 1) very central, 2) super high touch, 3) luxury boutique/pied-a-terre feel vs. high end hotel feel. If that is what you want, you cannot go wrong."
