PB hotel design editorial

A seventeenth-century palazzo on Via del Babuino, one of the three streets radiating from Piazza del Popolo in Rome's ancient trident plan, gives The First Roma Arte its architectural bones — a rusticated travertine facade, ornate arched entrance portal, and wrought-iron window grilles that centuries of Roman street life have done nothing to diminish. The conversion leaned into contemporary art as its organizing principle rather than defaulting to period grandeur, with the 29 rooms and suites treated as gallery spaces furnished for sleeping rather than the reverse. Inside, the interiors hold that tension between old shell and new sensibility with reasonable confidence. Walls in warm taupe set off cobalt velvet sofas, navy silk curtains, and built-in bookshelves that give the rooms the atmosphere of a well-edited private library. Artworks — circular tondo compositions mounted on vivid orange grounds, large-scale painterly canvases in deep green — punctuate every surface without tipping into the formulaic hotel-art mode. The rooftop restaurant opens the property's best card: a retractable pergola structure framing an unobstructed panorama across Rome's cupolas and umbrella pines toward the Pincian Hill, furnished with cream leather armchairs and dark marble-topped tables. The ground-floor dining room takes a quieter approach, oak floors and a dramatic illuminated wine wall visible through a glass partition doing the atmospheric heavy lifting.

"We stayed for three nights. It was our first trip to Rome. I can’t say enough about the staff at the First Roma Arte. Everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful. The location is excellent to explore the city. We easily walked to the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. Loads of restaurants and cafes nearby. Enjoyed dinner at the rooftop restaurant. It was fantastic. The morning breakfast is outstanding and offers a stunning view. I’m certain we will return again soon."

"My husband and I had a delightful stay at the First Arte. We were immediately impressed by the warm welcome we received upon arrival and felt right at home. Throughout our time at First Arte, we were given helpful touring and restaurant recommendations by Natalia, a valued member of the reception team. Our room was elegant, spacious, and quiet. We appreciated the central location and the side street entrance ensured a peaceful stay. We can’t wait to return to the First Arte next time we come to Rome."

"We had an amazing stay at The First Roma Arte and highly recommend it. The First Roma Arte is perfectly located, well appointed and immaculately kept and the staff is amazing. The breakfast was delicious - one of the best meals we had in Italy. We send our highest gratitude to Gianfranca who absolutely saved us by helping us book our stay and welcomed us warmly. We truly cannot say enough about how wonderful she is and want to share a bit more to help others understand why we recommend staying at The First Roma Arte so highly. We arrived in Rome around 6 PM and went to the other place we had booked (The Inn at the Spanish Steps) only to find that it was unsafe (to say the least) and that we had to quickly figure out another plan. We are a family of 5 - 2 adults and 3 teenagers - and were close to frantic as it was late in the day, during the holiday season, and we know many places can't accommodate a family our size. Our first call was luckily to The First Roma Arte and we were so very fortunate that Gianfranca answered the phone. We explained the situation, she confirmed they had availability and helped us reserve everything. We headed over to The First Roma Arte really upset and quite frankly, shaken. From the moment we entered The First Roma Arte, we were warmly welcomed and Gianfranca felt like our guardian angel. Once we were settled in our rooms, it became clear that the entire staff at The First Roma Arte is amazing and goes the extra mile for everyone. We highly recommend The First Roma Arte and extend our deepest gratitude to Gianfranca."

"Clean room, very comfortable stay, and an excellent breakfast. All staff were extremely polite and helpful, truly without exception. I requested a late check-out and they were very accommodating. The location was excellent, and the concierge team was incredibly helpful. Uber can reach the hotel easily, and there are many restaurants and supermarkets within a 1–5 minute walk. Room dining was the only downside, as the menu was quite small with limited variety. The bed was very comfortable as well. Overall, I couldn’t find anything that would stop me from booking this hotel again on my next visit to Rome."
