PB hotel design editorial

Rome has a way of making newcomers prove themselves, which makes the particular confidence of The Hoxton, Rome all the more striking. Rather than chasing the city's ancient grain, the hotel leans fully into its 1970s concrete host in the residential Salario district — a seven-floor building that carries none of the centro storico's grandeur and is better for it. Ennismore Design Studio and London-based Fettle Design channelled mid-century Italian modernism into the 192 rooms, layering salvaged Murano glass chandeliers, local marble, terrazzo, and herringbone parquet with a collector's ease rather than a decorator's anxiety. The rooms show two distinct moods: darker configurations with deep walnut grid-panelled walls, scallop-topped upholstered headboards, and Murano-style swirl lamps that pull from the Seventies without parody; lighter rooms swap in sage green panelling and burnt-terracotta bouclé chairs alongside warm timber windowsills that frame Rome's ochre rooftops like a postcard you'd actually keep. The restaurant carries the whole thing together — a curved banquette anchoring the room, kentia palms spilling around a dark marble bar set beneath arched wood-framed mirrors, the atmosphere closer to a Milanese brasserie of 1968 than any Roman trattoria. The ivy-draped outdoor terrace, wicker chairs catching the afternoon light against a backdrop of Liberty-era apartment facades, is where the building's unfashionable neighbourhood quietly reveals itself as the point.

"Just back from birthday city break in Rome. We stayed 4 nights at The Hoxton and loved it. We stayed in a Cosy room. On booking I was a little bit concerned it would be very cosy but no need to worry the room size was actually great. Big bed & also a small sitting area & felt spacious. It’s a well designed space with places to put things so can keep tidy. We had a room on the 7th floor so little bit of a view too. Rooms have nice mid century touches & decor feels quite lux. The bathroom was good size, well lit & had large walk in rainfall shower. Lots of nice touches like the Roberts Radio which was on when we came into the room. Small fridge with free milk & water, kettle & coffe & tea. Safe also in your room. Air con in the room was good. Small tip it did switch itself off through the night & I woke up several times hot. Spoke to reception & that was switched off with no problems. Everyone was very friendly and helpful from reception to bars and lovely guy who serviced our room. Bars and lounge areas are relaxed and chilled. We had drinks & antipasto on the terrace & late night drinks in the bar & really enjoyed both. It’s a good area to stay a little away from the main tourist area but it’s easy to get into the centre using local buses about 3-4 mins walk away at Po/Simento. Some great local restaurants a short walk away. Try La Balestra which was lovely and reasonable but always busy with locals so maybe book. There is an amazing award winning pastry shop Grue very near too. We would definitely stay again & now considering signing up for the Hoxton Disloyalty membership."

"We stayed at The Hoxton Rome shortly before Christmas and had a wonderful experience. The hotel is beautifully designed, with a modern yet welcoming atmosphere. Our room was clean and comfortable, and the staff were consistently kind, professional, and helpful. The lobby is stunning, and the Elio restaurant is a real highlight. The location is quiet yet well connected to the city center. Highly recommended!"
